Which Capslock legend do you prefer and why?
« on: Mon, 13 October 2014, 11:17:16 »
Hi, little edit, I would like to rephrase the question: Do you prefer the Capslock, Padlock, or Downarrow legend for caps lock?

Hey just wondering how do people like the down arrow caps lock legend?

I love how symmetric it looks with the shift key. How come it isn't more common?

Would you like to have it on your keyboard instead of "Caps lock" if it were an option?

Seems counterintuitive to me. If "shift" is up, why would "shift lock" (or caps lock) be down? I could see some kind of double-arrow pointing up, though.

The caps lock key should be abolished altogether; it’s not worth worrying about its legend.

(Putting shift on a thumb key makes it easy enough to type extended passages in all caps when necessary, but better still is to have a command to capitalize the selected text, and just type normally, then at the end select and capitalize any extended block of text that needs to be all caps.)

If you really need a caps lock key, the little lock symbol is cute, or the up arrow with an extra rectangle at the bottom is fine ⇪ or ⇬.

In general though, just say no to modes.

Eh. I still find a reason to use it every once in a while and don't always feel like digging up whatever command is required to all-cap it in software. I agree it's in way too prominent a spot on the keyboard, though.

I might switch my own for something else, but then I'd be constantly adjusting to the other two keyboards (my laptop and work) that I can't swap keys on...

That one is great, but Shift Lock is still my favorite.

Arrow in a bag - that's funny.  Yes, I prefer the up arrow in a lock myself.

Quoting me causes a posting error that you need to ignore.

How about the capital letter A on a padlock? That symbol is quite common next to the Caps Lock light.

How did it get derailed? We’re talking about preferred legends for caps lock.

Okay, I’ll give you a point-by-point:

Quote
Hey just wondering how do people like the down arrow caps lock legend?
I don’t think it makes any sense

Quote
I love how symmetric it looks with the shift key. How come it isn't more common?
It isn’t more common because it’s confusing. I’m pretty sure the down arrow was originally used on IBM data entry keyboards to mean something different. In any event, the lock, the double up arrow, and text legends are all much easier to interpret.

Quote
Would you like to have it on your keyboard instead of "Caps lock" if it were an option?
No.

But again, it’s kind of irrelevant: caps lock is a total waste of a good key location, for a totally unnecessary function. If someone really needs caps lock, they should implement it via some mechanism like: (a) press and release one shift key and only the following character gets capitalized, (b) hold down a shift key and everything typed while shift is depressed gets capitalized, (c) press and release both shift keys and it turns on caps lock, with a press of either shift key turning it back off again. That way the function is available for someone who really needs it, but doesn’t waste a key.

Jacob, fair enough, your point by point clears it up!

I just thought you were going on hating the caps lock for some reason but it makes sense upon reading it more.

I was just more curious about how the Down-arrow came to existence, what it means, and how people actually like/dislike the legend itself.

I vote yes to both the down-arrow AND the Caps Lock key in general.

Anybody else here code in SQL?  Caps lock is damn convenient for that stuff.

Code: [Select]
FROM
Tickets
Inner Join Users ON Tickets.Owner = Users.id
Inner Join Queues ON Tickets.Queue = Queues.id
WHERE
Tickets.id =  Tickets.EffectiveId
AND
Queues.Name LIKE  'ALERT.%'
AND
        Tickets.Subject NOT LIKE '%ACKNOWLEDGEMENT%'
AND
Tickets.Status NOT LIKE 'rejected'
AND
Tickets.Created >=  '2014-10-13 02:00:00'
AND
Tickets.Created <   '2014-10-20 02:00:00'

Underlined arrow up (Apple, TypeMatrix), followed by arrow down (Cherry).

I don't have such a key on my keyboard though, and when I do, it's remapped to Backspace or Control.

Whichever one is on that particular GMK/Cherry set and I'm happy. In an ideal world I'd have a CTRL key in that spot but I don't ever see that happening with GMK's MOQ.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Okay, I guess judging from the feels in this thread, I must say the only solution is that.. CONTROL key for Capslock should be an option for more keysets!!

Another question for you Control-capslock loving people!!

Do you prefer a full-sized capslock-location Control, or do you prefer a stepped-half-size Control for it?

For me the legend or icon is less important than having the colour that matches the rest of the modifiers.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
