Moving on from old boards to new.
« on: Tue, 14 October 2014, 21:38:00 »
So as the title implies, how do you move on from old boards to new boards?

Maybe your old board has broken and you don't want to get the same board twice, so you buy something new and different. Maybe you just thought it was time for a change and with that being said, you go out and buy a new board that you've had your eye on for quite some time.

But yeah, how do you move on from old boards that you have used for a long time, personally, I'm having a fair bit of difficulty in doing so, I have to force myself to not go back to my old board and so on, it's a constant struggle, lol.

I keep it fresh and swap out a new board every few weeks at my one computer. At the other one (for "work") I keep the same keyboard on it. That way I can have the feel of my favourite as well as the novelty of a new keyboard.

Nowadays I swap between cherry / topre boards and keep something IBM for "work".

If you miss your old board, clearly you were not ready to move on.  So you would go back to the old one.

If it's broken, you don't have much of a choice, so you just do it.  Or else it's not really broken.

Move on when one breaks or I find cheap or free vintage boards.  Vintage is the way to go imo. The exception being unicomp.

I bought a new board because my old board has/had chattering issues and what not, so therefore, I did not want to have a chattering keyboard, but then I somewhat fixed it with a thorough cleaning + compressed air and the issue seems to have subsided, ;_;

So far I haven't had to move on because I've just repaired my daily driver board and hope it continues being useful for years to come.

All of my keyboards still work, except the Trigger that I bought as broken.

I just swap between them routinely, whenever I feel like a change.  Or, in the case of the Model M, when I feel that I can get away with the extra noise.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Impossible. New boards all suck.

The only solution is to move from old boards to even older boards.

I actually have the opposite problem.  I always want newer boards and then tend to forget about my older ones.  Eventually, they just get neglected and collect dust on a shelf. :-X

All of my boards work and I usually switch between them.
As much as I love clears, I still miss hearing beautiful clicky clicks.

I would sit down with both boards, and I will tell the older board:

"Bae, it's time for a new bae to take over. I'll miss you a lot. It's not that you aren't good, but this one is better, we click and the synergy between us is much better than our synergy... I hope you find a better boyfriend/girlfriend (owner), wish you good luck in your future endeavors"

and list in on the classifieds. LOL

On a more serious note, I find no problems when moving from board to board. Only when moving from switch to switch will I meet some problems.
