Keyboard Therapy
« on: Fri, 07 November 2014, 10:08:54 »
Seems like this is a much needed thread.  8)

Do you hate yourself after buying just one more keyboard? Does your significant other question your sanity because you've got more keyboards than pants?

Are you struggling with thoughts of purchasing 2 of the same keyboard just to have a spare? Do you lay awake at night wondering what you'll do if your keyboard stops working tomorrow?

Or maybe you've secretly been cheating on your daily driver with a scissor switch or chiclet board?

Don't hate, relate. Let's all enjoy our feeling and have no regrets. Don't carry your keyboard burdens alone.  :thumb:

i've been questioning the purchase of the novatouch after purchasing the FC660C as my first topre board, because even though i do like the typing on it, i don't know if it's worth the money.

that said, i will probably also buy a 55g realforce just to experience the difference. :-\

Only time I regretted buying a keyboard was when I bought a Dauphin DCK84 thinking it was complicated Alps and it was these weird low profile Alps which felt bad. Other than that? Nah.

Somewhat off topic, what happened to therapy therapy?

Anyways, I never regret getting a new keyboard, except for the first one I ever got: it had MX browns...

I hate myself and it stresses me out knowing my bank funds are getting smaller everyday.

I actually own more keyboards than jeans..  and yes she questions why the heck I need so many keyboards when I can only use 1 at the time. (she just doesn't understand)

I use my macbook keyboard at lot when im not home since its my travel computer.

I need help I have a hoarding problem and I buy on impulse too much. If I see something at a good price I buy it. This website called slickdeals has tainted my soul and I feel empty with out buying stuff.

If you look at my signature thats all the keyboards I own.

in this month alone I bought 2 hhkb 2 fc660c

The keyboards themselves are usually pretty cheap.  It's the new keys, switches, LEDs, screw and nut drivers, cables, powder coating, stickers, screws, springs, stabilizers, resistors, diodes, housings, cases, PCBs, controllers, paint, heatshrink, labels, solder, multimeters, snips, foam, clamps, drills, dremel, bits, epoxy, etc - that adds up.

I'm more disturbed that I have more keyboards than computers, and there are still more keyboards on my wish list.

I don't think I needed keyboard therapy until I set up all my keyboards on the tables here for my meetup last month.  It was the first time I had seen them all laid out at the same time.   But whatever, it's okay.

Current keyboard therapy confessions:

1. I continue to buy and own normal staggered keyboards like my nerd60 even though I prefer to use the ergodox and almost exclusively have used the ergodox since April 2013. My full metal ergodox is essentially my end game board until another matrix board replaces it

2. I have 2 un-built phantoms and 1 phantom I never finished rebuilding.

3. I have 1 un-built ergodox I need to sell or whatever with

4. I have 4 incoming GH60

5. I have multiple key cap sets I need to sell off but I'm too lazy to sell

6. I bought 2 G80-11900 (trackpad) when someone on eBay sold them for $30 each. I harvested one and when I was cleaning up I stepped on and destroyed the pcb. Those boards are now running for 100$+ even though they absolutely don't deserve to be.

7. I have an un-built GONpad

8. I never actually fully finished my Nerd60, it's missing resistors and leds and some switches are messed up due to sip socket mod not done correctly, I need to remove and fix them without scratching the case.

9. Did I mention I'm to lazy to sell anything

10. I accidentally touched my soldering iron to my 6,7,8 keys on one of my retro dsa sets destroying them

Should I even go on......

I want to try Topre but I can't justify 200€ for a spring on top of rubberdome .

I'm dying to test a Topre keyboard too but as I have 2 keyboards already (one for my desktop and one for the laptop) I can't justify myself to buy one more. I already have the scorn of my friends who think I'm stupid to own 2 keyboards already, especially when they cost over 150€.

I think I'll just have to sell my Ducky. And even though I'd do it, I don't know if I should get a RealForce 88U 45g or 55g ... Don't tell me get both!

I still can't explain to my friends why I spend so much money on keyboards, and to be honest, I'm not sure I really know either.

Hi, my name is Andrew and I have a keyboard problem.  I've liked and used mechanical keyboards regularly for maybe 3.5 years now.  I've had several boards for that time but have recently been on a rampage.  My total mechanical count is 10.  I'll probably have more soon.

My current list.

IBM M terminal
IBM M 2
IBM 4704 107 key
2x NMB w/black space invaders
Chicony 5981 w/SMK alps mount
Black DellAT101W with black alps
Zenith Data Systems with yellow alps
1 unbranded bad keyboard with what I'm guessing is alps clones'
1 keyboard (brand) with white Fubata switches

Some I got for free or under $10.00  but in total on keyboards so far I've probably spent $250.00, most of it in the past 2 months.  In the next two, depending on christmas I will probably spend $100 more.  I'm being consumed slowly by vintage keyboards especially IBM.  I thought I'd get a few and be satisfied but its just adding fuel to the fire.  They are like pokemon, gotta catch 'em all!

Plenty of people spend that much or more on one keyboard.

Indeed.  I will point out though that like $230 of this is on one keyboard :D.  And while $250 isn't a ton of money, its a fair amount for me and I always feel guilty about it but don't really regret it (yet)
