Well keyboard + parts I'm up to 240. And I will be putting in another 100 or so before it actually works.  Now that I think about it I feel terrible lol.

I put in about $300 into my duck viper, might pay someone later down the road to resolder my switches + leds.

All the best keyboards I’ve seen had much more time put into them than money per se. If you spend 10–50 hours making something, a few hundred dollars in materials and parts is the trivial part.

Bought in on the Octagon group buy: $366 shipped. Add about $50 worth of switches, LEDs, and korean springs, and $100 for a custom keyset. So not counting time and effort in putting it together, it's going to be a >$500 keyboard. Dear god what have I done.

With at least six bouts of shipping, modification and switches, I was up to over $500 on my WASD V2. I will try and find the thread I posted about it somewhere...

Even factoring shipping into Singapore I have never spent over $250. And most were much cheaper, at $125 or less shipped. But I did go through a large number of cheap terminal and POS keyboards before I found what I wanted. So in a way it is well over $2k.

$250 for now, I'm just starting to tread this whole keyboard addiction thing so yeah. It's an HHKB pro 2 with a keyboard roof. I got it cheaper cause I have someone I know from japan that could buy it for me there.

Next project I have in mind would prolly cost me like $3000 for a single keyboard.  :D

Thank you so much my raccoon friend.

Considering that I'd spent like over $2k on various terminals and POS boards with very little resale value on geekhack, I was feeling guilty. But I'll never feel guilty when any two of your keyboards cost more than all of mine (including my model Fs).

After all, at least I am trying out different layouts not easily found in retail keyboards. Many of the people buying Korean customs are getting standard TKL layouts, essentially paying 10x the price of a Cooler Master just to get incrementally better quality.

I spent $550 total on my Kingsaver and $800 on my Realforce when I had it.

Realforce was:
-$250 for the board
-$150 for lime printed caps
-$400 for Digilog case

Definitely won't drop more than $500 for another board though. The RF was a VERY rare occasion, and a bit of an outlier.

Now I don't understand. Your friends were willing to pay so much, but they are not geekhack members? How did you talk them into spendind these ridiculous sums? Are you a professional salesman?

Normally it is only the committed geek who is willing to shell out so much money for a keyboard. Frankly, in Singapore, most people won't even pay $20 for something that they expect to get for free when they get a computer for free. (The ISPs here GIVE you a desktop when you sign up for a 2 year broadband plan, so it is widely expected that you can get and change a keyboard every 2 years without spending a cent.)

What makes a board expensive is usually not the initial purchase.  Its the replacement parts; new keys, new finish, new controller, new screws, new feet, new USB cables, custom labels, etc that make it expensive.  Spending over $500 on one board is all too easy.

There are two strategies here. One is to try out as many keyboards as possible that are weird or interesting for the experience. That's me and Dorkvader.

Most people have more or less decided what they like, and are willing to plunk down a lot of money and time to outfit one board to perfection eg in designing a metal case and sourcing just the perfect keycaps for it. That's probably how you guys rack up the costs.

And there are people who do both, and wind up moving house so that their new place can keep their keyboard collection. That's SpamRay and possibly JDCarpe.
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

About $1300 in my 360C with Cherry dyesubs. Probably the most I'll ever spend on a single keyboard, but never say never.

I'm still not sure if I like it more than my HHKB :))
What did you do, fill the inside with money instead of shelf liner?  :blank:

Did you not see the phrase Cherry Dyesubs? Maybe he got them from a G80-5000 or some ultra rare keyboard.
Just messing around in the first place but no they did not come off of a g80 5000, that wouldn't really make any sense to do even before taking into account a few of the keys not working (Spacebar and a shift key I think)

That would be like buying an ibm model m15 and stealing its keys :P

I'm not on the same level as many GHers- I think the max I've spent is on my most recent keyboard- $160USD on an FC660M

With all due respect to those fellow GHers that have fat wallets and no-remorse to buy over-priced stuff, I'd say that while I love this hobby, I still keep my expenditure on it under control. My highest cost purchase has been an FC660M for $130 with shipping included.

I think that using a cheap keyboard with an expensive computer does not make sense; but to expend more in the keyboard than in the computer does not make sense either, in my humble opinion. In the other hand, nobody can tell others what to do with their hard earned money.

Wait, I only just noticed this. Demik has 100069 posts? Even if (unlike JDCarpe) he spends 5 cents per post, that's 500,000 cents = $5k

So speaks the guy who teaches accounting and business management at university level. Did I recall correctly your job?

If you taught geeky things like programming and electrical engineering you might think differently. Then you wouldn't care so much about the finances, and care a whole lot more about the engineering and the technology and what have you.
