New to the forum and I'm looking to purchase a Scorpius M10 or Cherry G80-3000 (G80-3000LSCRC-2) -Blue Cherries. Any advise on which on to purchase? :help:

Any advise or feedback on either board would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has purchased the Cherry recently please let me know where you purchased it.

Both are meant to be good, there used to be some reliability problems with the Scorpious, but I don't think it's as common any more and they've probably fixed whatever it was that was causing it. Tbh, pick whichever one is the cheapest.

There's also the Filcos, but they're going to be a good deal more expensive than either the Scorpious or the G80.

The Scorpius is a little cheaper, but I wasn't sure about the quality of the M10 vs. the Cherry. I also wasn't sure about which form factor/style is better :decision:

Style depends on your taste.

I don't know what the M10's keycaps feel like, but I love the feel of Cherry's keycaps. Very hard and sturdy plastic.
I don't know the price of shipping, but you'll probably be fine with the M10 if the G80's style doesn't win you over. They're both using the same switches, so there's not that much of a different.

Does the M10 employ plate-mounted switches or also PCB mounted ones like the G80? If it has plate-mounted switches, I'd prefer the M10.

I have never used an M10, so I cannot comment on it. However, I do own two G80-3000 and I can say they have been my favourite keyboards for a while now. If the G80-3000 was not a great keyboard, I would not have bough another one :-) One thing worth mentioning though is the scooped F and J keys. They do take some getting used to, but did not take very long for me.

The switches are plate-mount switches, while the PCB also allows for PCB-mounted switches (the holes are there).

That's funny, when I looked at the PCB of my M10 it was a lot cleaner...

AAAAGGGGHHHHH - I ordered an M10 earlier today and the solder pictures have made me :scared:. (just kidding)

Thanks everyone for the comments and I am excited to get the M10. This will be my first mechanical keyboard and I don't believe it will be my last (this sickness appears widespread in this forum).

don't get an M10, the soldering really doesn't hold up. i just finished putting another pair of jumpers on mine to fix the comma key.

i was just in there, and if this design is not what "PCB mounted" means, then i can't imagine what is. the switches are soldered directly to the PCB. what's worse, the failure mode, as far as i can tell, is that the PCB trace conductor tears, rather than the solder simply coming away from it, so the only fix is to jumper it (or throw the whole thing away)

If the traces lift, then I'd guess the switch was not sitting neatly on the board during assembly. One can call the G80's case cheap all day long, but at least reliability is not a problem.

How long have you had your M10? I looked at my PCB the other day, and the solder job was gorgeous. Very neat, consistent, and in one piece.

True. When I was looking to buy my first G80-3000, I checked out many reviews and did not see anything against its reliability. I did see comments against their cheap cases like you said.

I would be waiting for Scorpius M10 BackLight Edition.
I saw that on Computex 2009 in Taipei, Taiwan.
It's just like a better version of Steel 7G and even with a Backlight function.
With the function key, one could change the back light just like DECK does.

If the quality is okay, and made with cherry blue or brown switch, I would consider of getting one in Taiwan. ^_^

Plus, I have Cherry G80-3000 with black, white, brown, blue, and red switches. They are all different keyboards. Maybe you could try before you get one, if possible.

Just on the contrary, Cherry keyboards with "All Red Switches" were just available in Japan, 2008, then in China and Taiwan. I bought my black cherry with red switches in Feb, 2009.

The touch of cherry red switches is quite unique to other 4 switches. I guess probably some of you guys in USA tried that, too. ^_^

Could you please, please, please dissemble one and make photos?
I'm especially interested in the keystem. It would be really nice if you could make photos with a referece grid in them, e.g. graphing paper. Like so:

I do have a suspicion concering reds, but I need pictures for further analysis.

Huha, don't know what you're after in particular, but AFAIK red MX are really only blacks (i.e. linear) with the lighter springs from the blues (or brown? not sure). And the stem is red instead of black, obviously.

I'm not entirely sure. Take the loathed spacebar switch of MX browns boards, for example--you'd think it's a grey coloured brown keystem with a harder spring, but it's not. The plastic portion providing tactility is actually shaped differently.
Could be the same with reds for all I know, so that's why I'd be interested in detailed pics.

Okay, I didn't find a detailed dissection of the red MX with pictures. Someone gotta step up to that task. For discussions including comments by the wise Sandy55, stating it's identical to black MX with spring from brown MX, see here and here.

I wonder why there aren't any keyboards available here with red switches. I would think they might show up in a gaming 'board since they are linear like the blacks, and I would have thought that Filco would have an English 'board with reds available, too.

I guess Deck's extensive market research showed that gamers prefer stiffer switches. I, for one, don't/didn't really care much, but for pure typing, though, the lighter the better.

My guess is that they are the closest in force to the Cherry Blacks in their other boards, they are tactile, and they aren't very noisy.
