Hmm, well, there is a lot going on here. Here is my input:
1. I understand that this is an anniversary present and not a Christmas present. What is our date that you must receive the keyboard by? Most likely you do not have time to get a Korean custom keyboard.
2. $500 is way, way, WAY too much to spend if you are a noob. You don't even know what you want or like, so please DO NOT SPEND $500 on your first mech keyboard.
3. Your budget should be under $200, and closer to $100 per keyboard at this point.
4. However, you might consider buying 2-3 keyboards for around $100-150 each, and comparing them, and then selling the 1-2 that you do not like, or keeping 1 for you and 1 for him.
5. If he is a "Pro" gamer, I'm surprised his "Pro" team does not supply him with a sponsored keyboard. But, that is a discussion for another day, so w/e, maybe he needs a better e-sports agent, if there are any e-sports agents, or a better team.
6. For "Pro" gaming any MX switch will work great: red, black, brown, or blue. It really comes down to his personal preference. Personally, I would like browns or reds, but everybody is different.
7. For "Pro" gaming, he does not need LED lights. No "Pro" gamer ever looks at the keyboard when they are playing, b/c there is no time to look down. IMHO, he should have a blank keyboard, but that might freak him out, I dunno.
8. I dunno if boys like "flashy" things. I'm a boy and I don't like shiny things simply because they are shiny. Boys do like Ferrari's however, and so his interest in the Ferrari-themed Filco may have been more about Ferrari than the flashiness of the keyboard. I've never met a boy who did not like Ferrari's. Gay, straight and in-between, they all like Ferrari's. Why? Ask Enzo Ferrari why he was such a genius. Well, he's dead, so you have to ask him in heaven, but you know what I mean. Some little rich boy paid $52M for a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, in August 2014, which is most expensive Ferrari evar. I woulda bought that car too, but I was $51.99M short that day.

9. Back to keyboards, IMHO you want a TKL with reds or browns. Flashy does not matter. LED's are a waste of money, and they ruin the keyboard, b/c usually you need painted keycaps which are HORRID. You could get translucent blanks, which are kewl, but again, a "Pro" gamer does not need LED's.
10. Numpad? Why? I've never seen a Pro gamer use a numpad. But maybe he does something special with it. I dunno.
If you're a TL;DR person:
Final Answer: get him a full-size 104 Filco with reds or browns. Then get a TKL Filco with browns or reds (w/e you didn't get on the full-size), and compare them. I'm sure you and the BF will enjoy both keyboards. Filco is probably about the best choice in the world for a first mechanical keyboard.
