Keyboard for BF! Your inputs needed!!!
« on: Fri, 19 December 2014, 10:06:58 »
update 22/12/2014:

decided to go for GON thanks everyone for their input :D next step ... keycaps!!!
more info: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=66850.msg1569255#msg1569255

original post:

Ok, I've posted about getting my boyfriend a keyboard for our anniversary in the Keycaps forum :\ But tbh I'm also stuck on choosing which keyboard I want to get. I've been doing some research and spoken to several ppl already (probably annoying the hell out of them)...

It's suppose to be a surprise but I gathered that:

1. he likes keyboards to have the numpad... so I'm guessing I need 104/108
2. once he showed me the Filco Ferrari keyboard ... so I'm guessing he likes flashy/red ones
3. he likes crispy key sounds

other things:
1. he's a professional dota 2 player so from what i've read black/red switches are best for gaming?
2. he needs to carry the keyboard around sometimes because of tournaments ... (i really like the duck v2 look but it's too heavy)
3. he's favourite hero is the clockwerk (i've attached an image below) i'm thinking to go for the clockwerk colour theme...
4. he doesn't know anything about mechanical keyboards... ok he knows filco... and that's about it... not even switches and stuff... the same can be said about me before i started doing my research a week ago...

Right now my options are...

1. Filco Ferrari. Downside: no led, not as special, he's shown it to me before
2. Cherry 1869 mod into red... Downside: again, easily obtained.. so not as special a gift
3. GON 108 Downside: takes more than 2 months and somewhat over my budget
4. GON NS87 (A really nice guy offered me his so I can get an assembled on in one week and it's in red) Downside: Not 104/8

So I would really need your help and ideas on how I can solve my dilemma! Thanks!!

What is your budget?  I am assuming you are not looking for nice keycaps as well since that will basically double your cost.

Filco's are great quality boards, so that is never a bad option in my opinion.  It took me about 4 keyboards to finally replace my Filco as my daily driver.  They are well built and are a joy to use...

As for switches.  If he was not a gamer, I would suggest mx blues if he likes the crispy key sounds, but since he is a gamer I would NOT get mx blue switches.  I tried to game on mx blues for a while and they drove me nuts.  I think you should consider mx browns.  I find them very nice for gaming and I also find them to be my favorite all around switch.  I think people like linear switches for gaming if play games where they have to hover around the actuation point and DOTA is not really one of those games.  I play LoL (which has all the same mechanics as DOTA) and I enjoyed playing on browns.

I have heard good things about the different Ducky keyboards, but I don't have personal experience with them, so I will let others comment on that.  Don't let the fact that it is heavy turn you off too much.  The board being heavy is usually preferable when you are actually using it.

I personally would not focus too much on backlighting unless you know he commonly plays in dimly lit areas and actually wants backlighting.  I have backlighting on some of my boards and I rarely use it.  That is just me though.  I know others love their backlighting, but I personally think it is over hyped.

If I can think of other good insight or options, I will post back.

I also thought of that board.  I agree, that would be pretty much perfect.  You are going to end up spending close to that much anyway and you get such an awesome board with that one that it is probably your best bet.  That is a great option...

Edit:  Looking at that board again, I think that is exactly what you want.  I would recommend you buy that one...

argh wait - - i thought it was perfect until i saw there's no f keys... which is much more important than the numpad since in his games he has to press f1 - 4 lol... so the f row is essential...

Fair enough.  Ya, I don't use function keys when I game, but I am a n00b in comparison... :)

Without going overboard, there aren't many "flashy" keyboards other than the ducky that would fit all your criteria, especially when you throw backlighting into the mix. Other than he Corsair RGB line... Which we choose not to talk about here.

I don't either XD  = = I play on a Mac and the F row is too far for my hands anyway...

Well, I wish there was a place where I can go try out these different switches...

My budget is somewhere under 500$ ...

regarding LEDs - - oh well, he's a "boy" ... he likes shiny stuff

Oh wow under $500! And f-row keys huh...

In that case: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=66319

Just FYI, you'll still need keycaps. Which may bring you close to $500 lol. But this is a really nice korean custom board that you don't see often for sale.

Yeah! I saw this and I really liked it but the thing is I heard that it weighs like 3kg? and also I didn't know what mushy + rattling stabs meant...

It means that they are cherry stabilizers and he didn't clip the dampener on the bottom of the stabilizer.  So at the very bottom of the keypress there is a little piece of plastic which bends (this is how cherry designed them).  Most people cut off those little dampeners because they seem to think it makes a difference.  I did on my builds because I am a sheep and I followed the herd.  :P

For the rattle, you can ask him if he would lube the stabs for you (without unsoldering) and it will probably take care of the rattle.

The nice thing about that board is the F row is closer to the num row, so it would probably be awesome for a gamer.

The MX clears are not ideal to be honest.  However, I currently game on 65g lubed clears and it is fine.  I preferred browns though for gaming to be honest.  I think the 67g lubed clears will be pretty nice though.  In my opinion, that is right around the sweet spot for clears.  I like anywhere between 65g and 68g on clears.  Less and the recoil of the key is hindered IMO, more and they just feel too heavy (for me, who likes lighter switches).

Is this a Christmas present, because otherwise I would just suggest doing something custom like a GON, that or you could find someone on the artisan section (such as myself, deffinetly not a shameless plug) that could modify any keyboard on the classifieds to MX red or brown.

Unfortunately I can't really contribute to the thread as anything outside of IBM keyboards I don't know a ton on.  I just wanted to say he is a really lucky guy.  I wish my wife would try to find a keyboard for me for Christmas or my birthday, or at least take time to try to do some research.  So I guess bump, +1, and good luck!.

Hmm, well, there is a lot going on here.  Here is my input:

1.  I understand that this is an anniversary present and not a Christmas present.  What is our date that you must receive the keyboard by?  Most likely you do not have time to get a Korean custom keyboard.

2.  $500 is way, way, WAY too much to spend if you are a noob.  You don't even know what you want or like, so please DO NOT SPEND $500 on your first mech keyboard.

3.  Your budget should be under $200, and closer to $100 per keyboard at this point.

4.  However, you might consider buying 2-3 keyboards for around $100-150 each, and comparing them, and then selling the 1-2 that you do not like, or keeping 1 for you and 1 for him.

5.  If he is a "Pro" gamer, I'm surprised his "Pro" team does not supply him with a sponsored keyboard.  But, that is a discussion for another day, so w/e, maybe he needs a better e-sports agent, if there are any e-sports agents, or a better team.

6.  For "Pro" gaming any MX switch will work great:  red, black, brown, or blue.  It really comes down to his personal preference.  Personally, I would like browns or reds, but everybody is different.

7.  For "Pro" gaming, he does not need LED lights.  No "Pro" gamer ever looks at the keyboard when they are playing, b/c there is no time to look down.  IMHO, he should have a blank keyboard, but that might freak him out, I dunno.

8.  I dunno if boys like "flashy" things.  I'm a boy and I don't like shiny things simply because they are shiny.  Boys do like Ferrari's however, and so his interest in the Ferrari-themed Filco may have been more about Ferrari than the flashiness of the keyboard.  I've never met a boy who did not like Ferrari's.  Gay, straight and in-between, they all like Ferrari's.  Why?  Ask Enzo Ferrari why he was such a genius.  Well, he's dead, so you have to ask him in heaven, but you know what I mean.  Some little rich boy paid $52M for a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, in August 2014, which is most expensive Ferrari evar.  I woulda bought that car too, but I was $51.99M short that day.

9.  Back to keyboards, IMHO you want a TKL with reds or browns.  Flashy does not matter.  LED's are a waste of money, and they ruin the keyboard, b/c usually you need painted keycaps which are HORRID.  You could get translucent blanks, which are kewl, but again, a "Pro" gamer does not need LED's.

10.  Numpad?  Why?  I've never seen a Pro gamer use a numpad.  But maybe he does something special with it.  I dunno.

If you're a TL;DR person:

Final Answer:  get him a full-size 104 Filco with reds or browns.  Then get a TKL Filco with browns or reds (w/e you didn't get on the full-size), and compare them.  I'm sure you and the BF will enjoy both keyboards.   Filco is probably about the best choice in the world for a first mechanical keyboard.

I ♥ Click Clack.  I ♥♥♥ Bro Caps.

I would also echo the sentiment that he probably wants a TKL (he may just not know that yet).  :)  I personally find a full size keyboard way too big when gaming because my mouse is a half mile away.  I personally prefer a 75% board, but that is just me.

I am not saying you should get this keyboard because I agree that it is probably more than you should spend on the first keyboard, but this shows what a 75% looks like.  They are pretty hard to come by, so if that is a nice form factor, you might have to spend that kind of money to get one.

Ducky Shine 3.  Can find them for around 120-150.  Great lighting options for a non Kustom board, full size, and pretty standard layout so it'll be easy to get custom caps.  Check some videos on youtube.  I always liked the reactive lighting setting.  Has 6KRO over USB (and I believe NKRO with a dip switch setting), which is enough for DOTA.  Build quality is great.  Only reason I don't use my Shine II anymore is because I can't stand full size boards.

For DOTA 2 you'd be fine with almost any switch type.  I personally would never recommend clicky switches for gaming, but skill > keyboard.

I think 2 boards with different switches would be better than 1 really expensive board if it's your first mech.

If you can change his mind...smaller boards are "Better" for gaming.  Lets your mouse hand sit closer to your left hand...more practice hours in comfort.

1. Yup anniversary present so I have bout two months

2. 3. 4. After doing all these research I think I'm really liking these keyboards. Maybe I might try out different ones for myself in the future but him it's really more like a one-off kind of present :/ but yea you have a point, 500 might be too much ...

5. They had a contract with steelseries but broke off so now they just use whatever they like...

6. He hasn't had any experience with switches before so I don't think he knows which he likes either ...

Yea, he doesn't need numpad for his games but just used to it ... Once he used a tkl and said he didn't know where to put his right hand lol I think he's other team members also use full size keyboards ...

And of course he doesn't need leds ... Just for the aesthetics

Anyway I enjoyed reading your reply and very helpful :D

more on topic...
while I like the idea of getting a custom kb and make it a little personalized and all... I can't help wondering, what if he gets sponsored by another sponsor soon again?

I have been sponsored with hardware during my gaming in the past, and you kind of have to adapt to the gear they want you to use... :( not a lot of fun when you're super into computer peripherals like keyboards, mice, mousing surfaces etc.

What keyboard does he use now?

I haven't tried them, but I would go for:
WASD keyboards barebones, with
Vortex' white on black PBT double-shot moulded keycaps.
The stabilised keys could be a bit tricky to install, but they will not be mushy.

I'd recommend a Ducky Shine 3 with MX Browns or Reds. Personally I don't like linear switches like Reds and I think Browns are the best switches to get on a first mechanical board since it gives you a good reference point. Blues or Greens will give that click sound when they actuate, but they have somethimg called hysteresis which means the release point is much higher than the actuation point so you have to lift your finger practically to the top of the movement before pressing again if ypu want to double tap, which can be irritating when gaming. Reaction speed is better on Reds and Browns and Browns have a bump near the actuation point so you can find it easily.

The Shine 3 is fully backlit and has some nice lighting modes like the reactive ones which light up the you are pressing with a fade effect so you see a trail of where you've typed. Flashy, but fun.

Then find a nice keycap set that matches your theme. Keycaps are a whole other rabbit hole to go down and learn about. The 'best' are thicker, heavier caps that add some nice feel to the press. Most of the high quality and custom coloured keycaps don't allow light to shine through the letters, though.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

;) ok i just order the GON 108 housing ...
I've spoken to GON, he needs 2 months no matter what but he can help me engrave our names on top of the arrow keys so I'm also preparing .ai file for that.

now I'm deciding on the colour theme and keycaps... i'm thinking ... the clockwerk colours are red, silver, bronze, cyan. I wanted to get a red housing at first but GON recommended non-glazed black. i think that would be better too with red side LEDs.

I used the keyboard layout editor and made some templates...

Regarding the keycaps set ... A friend told me that they had a GB for GMK silver/white/red and silver/white/blue caps and will arrive in a month, so I thought I'd probably buy that off someone. They had 250 orders in total surely I can hack a set off someone :P.

Then the next time I will need is to find a red set of f keys... does anyone know anywhere i can find these or what the set may be called?

For the ESC key, I'm going to order this https://www.shapeways.com/model/2967695/clockwerk-cherry-mx-keycap.html?li=shortUrl&materialId=61. Tasker helped me make a clockwerk cap 3d model after I pmed him. I want it in bronze/silver and cyan/blue led light under it... haven't decided which...

mmmm that's that so far,  wish me luck and if you know where i can find the caps i would really appreciate it XDDDD

Oh wow under $500! And f-row keys huh...

In that case: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=66319

Just FYI, you'll still need keycaps. Which may bring you close to $500 lol. But this is a really nice korean custom board that you don't see often for sale.

i love your post on building your snowy white gon <3333

Most of the high quality and custom coloured keycaps don't allow light to shine through the letters, though.

ducky is really common in China and on Taobao :\ I don't want something that's easily obtainable ...

now i'm jumping in into that keycaps rabbit hole

GON makes some sweet stuff, pricey though if you let him build it. If you want to save some time and money you could just order all the parts (I'm sure GON or someone else could help you compile the parts) and have someone just build it for you.

What about the Cherry replica set?

I love my set and it fits the clockwerk color scheme nicely.

It's not GMK, but it's still a good set... backlight compatible... and I say that as someone who loves GMK (I own 3 sets...) and hangs out with a bunch of dota pros...

Either way, that GMK klaxon GB should be coming up soon if this isn't your thing.

You realize that it would cost about the same if someone other than GON builds it, right?

His prices are roughly in line with everyone else's.

That wasn't my intent, there are other people who also offer free soldering services, I just wanted to make sure the OP knew the options if there was a time crunch.

Yeah, I'm an idiot.

After even more investigation, I'm going with my final answer of June. Because google is hard when you can't go on liquidpedia and look at current team comps hah.

It's called "Klaxon" or "Red Alert"

https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=64679.0

This is the interest check for a GMK version, but you can get a signature plastics version in the classifieds.

Check out the rules for the classifieds here.

You said you talked to GON, yeah?

Ask him, he's nice.

If you want LEDs and switches, you'll need diodes and resistors and things like that. Ask GON about which ones to get.
