Wait wait wait...
So are the keys like scissor switch rubberdomes with e ink screens on the top or are they like touch surfaces which don't move at all with e ink screens on top..?
It looks like the first option but I'm not sure..

No way. If it was it would have been more popular in these parts of the internet.
If I remember correctly the keys were either really crappy rubberdomes or capacitive touchscreens.

I hope they go the whole way with this keyboard. Granted mechanical keys would make it a million times better. But have the layout intelligently change is also needed. As an example say I am working in vim and enter visual mode, it would be great if the keyboard knew this and changes the layout to respond instantly to this showing all the options available in this mode.

I've just emailed the makers of the keyboard suggesting mechanical keys and intelligent layout. Will let you guys know how they respond

The Optimus Maximum had Cherry ML switches and a separate screen on each key, and it was really expensive. The Optimus Popularis has transparent scissor switches over a single screen like the branded Razer keyboards.

I just downloaded the press kit.  It includes the images on the company's website.  If you scroll down their page about 30%, you can see the image below in the background (minus my modification).  I circled the interface between the touchpad and the keyboard.  Notice how thin the keyboard is at the left-most column of keys (the user's right side).  Assuming the touchpad is that thick across the length of the interface, and that the entire keyboard has the same switch type, this is not a mechanical keyboard.  The entire keyboard itself is pretty thin.  If that is an actual working model and not a mock-up, those keys don't have very much travel.  I would guess that it will be a few more years before we see a commercially released mechanical keyboard with e-ink legends.  Hopefully, we'll have the option of cylindrical or spherical keys when that happens.
