Philadelphia Meetup 1/16/15
« on: Mon, 05 January 2015, 12:26:00 »
As you may or may not know, I've been kinda getting into fountain pens lately. I may also have dragged Binge into the rabbit hole. Together, we're going to get wallethacked at the Philadelphia Fountain Pen Show. The show is from 1/16 until 1/18 in Philadelphia's City Center.

Binge and I thought it would be fun to have a little GH meetup and see if anyone would want to come hang out. I think FlyersFan1 is going to come out and I think there may be an appearance from a certain KBK creator ;).

Anyone interested in coming out? Perhaps join us as we nerd out over pens? Let me know.

Possible attendees:
- Myself
- Binge
- Flyersfan1
- Lurch

Looks like we're going to hit up a restaurant called Tamarind for dinner and then a gelato store called Capogiro for the meetup. We've got a hotel room or we can find somewhere else to chill afterwards I'm sure. Binge's local friend suggested the two places. Please let me know if you're allergic to anything or have other ideas.

No worry BRO, I'm still picking up the pieces from my broken heart. I don't think things will ever be the same. :p

BUT IT'S ALL GOOD BECAUSE CHEESESTEAKS. Or whatever good eats we will be consuming. ;)

OH MAN I NEED TO GO

Not just because of him, but because friends.

:(

I might need to fly... shoot.  Not enough vacation days...

This is the worst.  You guys should just all move to WI and we can be pals.

My wife and I LOVE Wisconsin.  We went on one last eat-a-thon before I started a soylent meal replacement regiment.

Bittners Bakery in Lake Geneva,
Nayeli's Pizza in Walworth,
then Killwins Ice Cream back in LG before leaving town (Rum Raisin, Egg Nog are the best flavors)

We also got married in Lake Geneva in 2004; we would seriously consider moving there if it weren't for the lack of jobs.

If I drive down I can take you. It's only a 5-6 hour drive, depending on NYC traffic.

Will have to talk to work about this, it's pretty soon....

I think Saturday we're planning on spending literally most of the day at the show. I'm not sure if we're going to duck out even in the evening. And then we need to head back to Binge's that night. I think if people are going to meet us and aren't interested in fountain pens, it will need to be Friday evening. You're more than welcome to hang out with us at the show if you're interested.

Fountain pens would be lost on me; my handwriting is barbaric.

That's a great reason to get a nice pen. Pickup a Pilot Varsity for $3. You don't need to get crazy and spend too much. The experience with writing is hopefully much more enjoyable than a ballpoint and it encourages you to spend more time writing...which hopefully translates to better handwriting.

I'd say I would come, but I'd have to get a ride in with someone, as I wouldn't trust my car to make it from CT to Philly in one piece... plus I hate city driving...

On MassDrop they are selling a LAMY Dialog 3 Fountain Pen at a unlocked price of $204.99(!) (MSRP $385.00!!!?)

wtf Son?  How far down the rabbit hole do Fountain Pens go?

You're so cute dante. Check out these links:

http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/247912-the-10-most-expensive-pens-in-the-world/

http://www.pelikan.com/pulse/Pulsar/en_US_INTL.CMS.displayCMS.202183./maki-e-unique-collection-2014

If you're looking at just prices, it goes deep. But in general, pens go way deeper than boards. There are so many vintage pen companies to look at, so many nibs to consider, so many papers to check out, and so many different writing styles.

Going off pure aesthetics - I'm still going to try that $3 pen you recommended.

I like the style of the Pelikan pens much more than anything in the "top 10 list."

The first link just looks like they rolled pens in some diamonds and stuff.  The Pelikan's look like works of art.

edit: Maybe I'll investigate this a bit more.  My handwriting as always sucked but have admired vintage handwriting styles/etc.  It makes me a bit sad to hear that cursive is no longer required in schools. :(

This is going to be most rad.  I've got some Philly friends who want to hang Friday and Saturday.  Either day is good until about 7-8PM on Saturday which is when I think Anson and I will have to head back West.

All these excuses. This thread needs more, "See you in Philly!"

This weekend sucks for me :'( Friday is my last work day in Indy, and saturday I will be driving from Indy back to PA all day.

So... stop by Harrisburg area late Saturday night?  We go out to bar?

So... Pen show album is up! http://imgur.com/a/ESdqa

I've got some random pictures I'll be posting later as well. But I thought I'd share our pen show pictures courtesy of Mrs. Binge.

Hey everybody it's Lisa Anderson!

She hollered at my wife, "Don't take my picture!"

It'll be nice to visit their storefront at some point.
