I hear you like Artisan bags and wrist rests
« on: Wed, 07 January 2015, 21:37:50 »
Hi,

My wife and I make some artisan stuff for mechanical keyboards.  I make wrist rests, while she makes bags.

Apparently I need to make 30 posts before I can start posting in the classifieds... so gotta start somewhere.

So, I start now.

You must also be a member for two months. But it's good to have more makers around!

2 months... seems a little OTT.  Why 2 months?

You can't trust a man who makes wooden wrist rests until he's lurked for 60days?

It's more to encourage new users to participate in the forum rather than using it strictly as a sales platform.

Can he post in artisan services without waiting 2 months?

Welcome to GH!

Have some pictures of the product to post?

I find 2 months is a little long but it forces people to really participate which becomes a good thing because everyone has a different perspective on things and knowledge from whatever background they have.
In my old forums people used it strictly for only sales far too often without giving back to the community at all.

Thanks for the pics! i remember seeing these on reddit.

Yeah, the thing with reddit is I can't make a bunch and then post them, because damn reddit has things drop down the page.  Feels like geekhack is a better place for them (once they trust me and whatever).

My wife's first bag (Digital warrior) was also on Reddit recently so you probably saw that too.  But she went and sourced more material today and is sewing bags as I write this.  Again, reddit's not ideal for that.

Don't pretend you know my addiction! .....but yes i did already see that post too......i have a problem lol

Although not financially great, have to considered doing a giveaway or something to get your name more known?
Another thing that would be cool is either a custom design whether it be paint or wood burning design, not sure if the skills are there for this though.

Either way, i look forward to seeing your design's and products!

Only just at the very start of this...  :)

I made a couple of wrist rests, just to see if it was comfortable.  I had no idea how comfortable it would be!

I'm fairly new to the mech world myself (even if I've already bought 2 of them) so I wasn't even sure if anyone else would be interested.  And I wanted to play with different shapes, designs and widths.  But, yeah, more complex designs are coming soon.

Like, the PokerII stuff seems pretty popular.  I also have a TKL, and I can't yet tell if it's TKLs that aren't popular or if people just think that wrist rest isn't a good shape...

So, lots of testing, poking and proding to do.

And that's when my wife made me a bag for my Poker II so I could take it to work.  And I was like "Holeee shiii" so I asked her to make one for you guys too.

But it sounds like people like the plainer bags and the more exotic wrist rests...

Anyway, stay tuned.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Sounds more like you are a maker than a seller.

Have you contacted the admins to see if you can be given your own sub-forum in the artisan services section?

Or perhaps just wait 2 months (which will pass very quickly once you start engaging with the community), and create a thread in artisan services so more people see what you have.

Good luck! :)

2 month waiting period?  Come on.  That is WAY too long.  IF you want a waiting period, I suggest 72 hours.  3 days is plenty time to wait to start selling stuff.  Also, what is post count now? 30?  I would lower that to 20.   That is my opinion.

Classifieds section needs new things listed for sale every day. And the more interesting things we have for sale in our Classifieds, the better it is for everybody, b/c that's what brings eyeballs.  Am I the only one who understands how the internet works?  Buzz, buzz, buzz.  That's not a bee.  That's what you need to generate i-commerce.

Not that I should weigh in on this, but you're right...  Not letting me sell, means I've gone and established a website 1upkeyboards.com - which by the way is awesome.

So now, instead of becoming an artisan seller in the artisan seller section of geekhack...  Now, I've just got a little website.  One, that I also mention in my signature.

Disagree.  It encourages people to be a part of the community instead of just using GH as a place to sell ****.  Places that just become clearing houses lose all sense of community and turn to **** pretty quickly most of the time.

GH is first and foremost a community of keyboard enthusiasts.

The classifieds area is a bonus for members, where established members can offer or seek unusual, rare or just common items at reduced prices for other members.

If your main aim is to buy and sell goods, there are other online auction sites where you will probably get a wider audience and higher prices.

This has been discussed many times before, and most people eventually agree that GH is a keyboard community, especially once they begin to participate :)

IMO your items are way overpriced and seriously at least pretend to want to be a part of the community instead of just trying to sell your stuff this is why there are rules.

Just did some research and very similar perhaps even better made bags just like these have recently been sold for <$20.

FYI 2 months is nothing, some forums require a year. The rule is to keep out out people that just want to sell stuff and not be a member of the community.  And with that, it sounds like you are the later.

EDIT: forgot 2

Hey guys,

Realize that this is my intro page.  I'm here BECAUSE there's a community here.

I have a couple of keyboards.  I have something I want to share with the group.  You've decided that I need to wait before I can share that.  Fine.  I'm not messaging the mods.  I'm not crying fowl.  When already established members of your community say "that's not how it should be" - of course, I agree with them.  You don't need the baker to live in your small town for a certain number of days before he can sell his first loaf.

But, hey, that's your decision.  Fine.  I'll live by it.  I am living by it.

Specifically, though, about the prices...  And specifically SpamRay.  I understand that my prices (which include shipping) are higher than some other people.  I'm not trying to cut them on price.  My wife just bought some really high-quality materials and made me a case, so I told her to make some and i would offer them to the community...  That's all I've done, that's all I'm doing.

If you want one.  You can buy one.  If you don't, I get it.  But don't go flaming...  Considering how much it costs to make and ship, and how long it takes to make one...

I have a job, I don't need the tiny profit on each bag to get by.

I just came here to offer them if you wanted one.

I'll wait and post in the artisan section when I'm able.

I'm not messaging the mods.

I just want to throw this out there.

I don't think that a mentality where messaging the mods is seen as whining, giving in, or otherwise negative (whatever the case may be here) is a healthy one.  I'm happy to discuss things with geekhackers, new and old.  If there's a rule that doesn't make sense or you disagree with, feel free to shoot me a PM to discuss it.  I can't promise that everything will turn out exactly how you'd like (obviously), but I can assure you I'll listen and offer whatever answer you're looking for.

I see that this is a minor part of the situation at hand here, but I just wanted to chime in on that point.

I'm not messaging the mods.

And all I meant is that I'm not kicking up a fuss.  I'm happy to play by the community rules.  I don't see a reason why I should be an exception.

I see that this is a minor part of the situation at hand here

Can you explain to me the rest of what is going on here?

What I meant by that is that part of the discussion in this thread is strictly about "the rules" and how that affects your ability to start a thread, etc.  This is the portion I'm referring to, and that I have more of a stake in, since it's mod-related.

The other portion I was seeing is a community response to coming here (for what appeared to be) solely to sell things.  This is a very tight-knit community, and we're kind of known for sometimes being unwelcoming to new members because of our many unwritten rules and such.  It's one of a few downfalls to how close/defensive we are - it can be daunting/intimidating to new members.  And I'm not commenting on the pros and cons of that one way or the other here, just explaining what I meant.   :thumb:

Even if he were here just to make a buck, this pitchforking attitude at GH is becoming problematic.
On the other hand, I don't see it said anywhere that prices include shipping and it wouldn't be the first time someone has tried to pull a fast one.
There have been shiesters and con artists here on GH, as well as general *******s; we just have a terrible system of weeding them out.

Please put your pitchforks away.

If you go to 1upkeyboards.com (and I hope you do) and click on any of the bags or wrist rests, the descriptions all say "FREE shipping within the USA."  I see from your tag that you're in Canada, so if you go through to purchase you'll see costs associated with shipping to Canada... we absorb part of the cost of shipping (as it's already built in to the price) and charge you for the remainder.
