How do
« on: Sat, 10 January 2015, 21:44:15 »
Hello!  First time poster, long time lurker.  I've been a fan of mechanical keyboards since the model M, though unfortunately I no longer own one.  Right now I have a Das Professional, a (recently broken) Goldtouch, and was also a participant in the most recent group buy at massdrop for the ErgoDox.  Looking forward to actually interacting with the people here!

Welcome to Geekhack!

A good range of switches and layouts in those few keyboards.  Have you got a favourite?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Thank you!

As far as favorite switches, I LOVE Cherry MX Blues and buckling springs, but those aren't work friendly due to the noise and my heavy hand (I'm a software developer by trade).  I also love ergo keyboards and I was a big fan of the Goldtouch.  I've always loved the hinge design on those.  But I've always wanted a ergo mechanical keyboard, which is very difficult to find it seems.  Even if I could find an M15 in good shape at anything approaching a reasonable price, I've heard that the hinge design is prone to breaking so I'd be reluctant to use it on a daily basis.  And since Goldtouch doesn't seem to want to do the obvious thing and make a mech keyboard - the keyboard that the M15 should have been - I decided to give the ErgoDox a try with MX clears. I did consider the Kinesis Advantage, but i really like the truly split design of the ErgoDox.  At least in theory.  I've never seen one in person.  Right now I'm using an MS Natural at work until I can get my shipment, and I use the Das at home.

The Ergo Dox comes up on Massdrop every now and again.  And there are a few Ergo Dox fans here on GH, but don't let tp4's raving fanaticism put you off :p

I use MX greens at work - no-one seems to mind :))

Actually if you like buckling spring, you might like MX greens - they are like a stiffer version of MX blues, and about the closest you can get to BS with a modern switch.

Even when I'm using the Das with blues working from home and I'm on a call with some of my coworkers, I get complaints ;)  That being said, the greens look pretty interesting.  They didn't offer the greens on the last drop, but if I end up liking the ErgoDox I might order another one for the house, and if greens are an option I would certainly consider them.

On an unrelated note, do the Captchas go away after enough posts?  I seem to be having trouble reading them.

That's an interesting point - I don't know how well greens would go with an Ergo Dox!  Maybe the Ergo Dox is supposed to be easy on the hands, so a lighter switch would be better.  OTOH if you have strong fingers, than almost any switch should be fine.
