Hmm - you could be right. Looking at the bottom pic on ebay, seems there are some fibers that appear to be trapped under paint.

Your are missing the point. IF it was an industrial ssk it wouldn't just be an ssk.

Ruined is a relative term.  While I agree that as far as originality goes, yeah it is a goner.  However as far as functionality goes it is probably fine.  If I were in the market for an SSK I would be happy to have this assuming it stays around the 100-125 range.  However Cindy certainly spoils us with prices.

The seller is full of ****. He bought it NIB and it's barely used, but he neglects to mention the ****ty paint job. Red flag city. $20-$40 tops is all I'd pay for it. ......stored in a closet for years...and the keycaps are two piece when they should be one piece...

Yea I'm thinking it's a deliberate attempt to confuse people into thinking it's an industrial.

I'm no SSK expert, but they did have some with two piece keycaps and some without blue keycaps as well if I'm not mistaken. There are different model #'s for different versions.

If the seller had explained the paint job in the description - the listing would be much less suspicious.

Dear npr_listener,

Did you paint this? I think you should mention that in the description just to avoid someone having issues with what they receive in case they don't notice.

well........... now it is officially a scam?

Interesting isn't it. The top just looks horrid though. Is it possible that the bottom is legitimate but the top is off a normal SSK. Like a frankenboard.

Or could it just be dirty and bad photo?

It might be just a crappy picture.  But I still think it is painted over.  Why?  I don't know.  Only the seller knows apparently.

But then again, I looked at the listing with the new picture, and the color is better.  I'm still not convinced.  Maybe he lost the keys or replaced them.  You never know what can happen in 20+ years.  If he is the original owner, he should know more than he does.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

The new pic looks like a completely different and legit board. I wonder what those spots were on it? Rat piss?

Snowdog, I'm with you man. Those first pics were really bad. I'm convinced it's real now, but I'm still not sure it was well taken care of considering the before and after pics. Good luck to whoever get's it.

The more I look at the before and after pics the more I see that it was a ****load of dust on the before pics. The dark spots are where the dust has been rubbed off from handling it. Someone ask him to take another pic of the back now that it's all cleaned up.

The seller updated his listing with a note as well.   Seems like he was using iPhone photo filters that distorted the original images.   It looks to be in great shape and a "real"  I SSK despite not having the IBM logo on top.

I wouldn't either.  The model number of the keyboard is for an IBM Personal Systems 2 Space Saver Keyboard.  It does look exactly like one from that.  I don't see where the "industrial" portion of it falls into place at all.  I will pass.

Edit: Specifically standard SSK.

The model number 41G3613 is a variation of 41G3600 which is the more common industrial SSK part number.   Google it and you can see examples.   This one up for auction is not a mod or a "regular" SSK. It should fetch $800 to $1000 without the logo.

IBM/Lexmark issued many part numbers for parts with virtually no variation so this is not out of the ordinary.

Maybe you should explain the source of your information...

Okay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-Personal-System-2-Space-Saving-Keyboard-Model-M-Clicky-PS-2-New-in-Box-/131110156558?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item1e86c6390e&afsrc=1&rmvSB=true

That one sold for 2 grand, and it was for the IBM PS/2.

IBM Personal System 2 Space Saving Keyboard Model M Clicky PS/2 New in Box

You are bidding on a vintage IBM Model M Space Saving Personal System 2 Keyboard.  It is brand new and has never been used.  The box was only opened to inspect and verify the contents.  The PS/2 interface cord is still sealed and wrapped.  If you are looking at this you know how rare it is and how often these come along.  Please ask all questions before bidding.  It comes with box and foam as well.  Item has all feet and the elevators are in perfect working condition.  The shipping will be fully insured to your street address.  Thanks for looking and happy bidding.  Serious bidders only please.

Ah, but that auction was for an industrial board. The pics are gone now, but we had a big discussion about it on GH. That's exactly why it went for $2k.
