HHKB Mac shortcut question
« on: Sat, 31 January 2015, 13:57:03 »
JUST received a HHKB in the mail and am playing with it.

So far, so good. It's gorgeous and the keys feel amazing, but I'm having a little trouble with one particular key combo I use a lot:

In the interest of keeping my hands on the keyboard, I very frequently use [option]+[arrow] keys to jump forward and backward one word at at a time. I also use [option]+[arrow]+[shift] to quickly highlight stuff word-by-word. I've been doing it for years and years now, and it's very thoroughly ingrained in my muscle memory. It's a little tricky on the HHKB so far because I have to hold [FN] to get to the arrow keys -- so I'm up to 3 or 4 keys pressed at once.

Wondering if anyone has any preferred workarounds or remappings that might help, or if maybe I just need to suck it up and get used to it eventually?

A popular workaround is to resell the HHKB (it resells well) and to purchase a FC660C.

I wanted to add a smiley but actually I'm serious.

Control+Alt+(Shift)+[npfb] doesn't work?

I either use my HHKB Pro 2 or other keyboards that are remapped to a Mac/HHKB Pro 2 layout. I don't use the particular keyboard shortcuts you mentioned, but it seems that these are feasible, especially if you use the default HHKB cursor diamond with index and middle fingers of the right hand while holding Fn with the right pinky. You could then use the left hand for Option or Option+Shift.

If the above doesn't work for you, you could use remapping software such as Karabiner for the Mac to create custom keyboard shortcuts.

Thanks everyone –– I'll keep at it. Right now I'm still working with the horrible black-on-black keys that it came with but I will set it aside until the white keys arrive from Japan.
