While many Americans are filling themselves with assorted junk food and alcoholic beverages watching large men throw, catch, and fumble balls, we are on GeekHack.

Just to be clear I told frosty I was going to start a thread after a discussion over sykpe and he decided to start one himself...

You dont have to be so bitter bro, the intention was to allow people to bond, knowing that not everyone has to be infatuated by sports. Sorry for trying Demik  :'(

jesus christ youre an idiot.

We could literally fund a trip to Mars if we did away with sports demik.  We just have to figure out how to get people to spend money on space instead of sports and other things that entertain them.

And OP, I know there is a lot of bull**** that goes on with sports, particularly stadium building and non-profit status, but come on.

Science and NASA arent agendas that can be supported as long as our society continues to be nonchalant about our future. Professional sports became a thing when the middle class emerged in the 1890s, basically because for once people had time to spend entertaining themselves. Now, we are much more aware of our situation in terms of our position in both space and society. If man wants to grow from infancy we need to start taking our future seriously. That starts with funding things like NASA that will be our only hope to truly trancend our rather bleak situation.

Im not lashing out at people that enjoy sports, im lashing out at a society that treasures sports but considers serious matters insignificant.

Why can't people think sports are manly and cool and science is nerdy and cool?  Or does that not fit your everyone is anti-intellectual narrative?

I have no problem with the combination of both, but at the moment that is not how we as a people function, it is either one or the other.

You have a rather myopic view of things.  I can tell you that your narrative is frankly untrue in a large portion of the US.  There are loud and outspoken anti-intellectuals, but that is quickly becoming a thing of the past.

One such example of changing things, the rise in people describing themselves as sapiosexual.

Well I do not deny that my world view is somewhat small, as is most peoples. It just seems that we are so polorized. Take for example the aparent lack of women in science. Now that could be a function of many things, but in many ways we could do a lot more to ensure that science is made "cool."

I would love to do something about it, and there are people doing something about it, like NDT or Bill Nye, making science cool again. That said, I don't see how this compares to the ignorance of politicians.

politicans dont tell you how they are going to change. they tell you how much their opponents suck.

youre not saying anything here other than how much of a waste sports are in your view.

we get it. you dont care for sports. thats fine, not everybody is. but you dont need to get on a high horse over something you dont care about. does nothing.

Im telling you exactly how we can change it. Simply by making science worth it to the people of the world we could do so much as a society.

And just to be clear I made a single comment about why sports are a waste of time, the rest have been about why science is worth our time.
