the deed is done! I added dental bands to each of the sliders and I'm seriously enjoying the results so far. I didn't think of it at first, but this mod has eliminated two problems I had with stock HHKB. The upstroke clatter is now substantially dampened and basically goes unheard. Great success here.

Secondly, one of the problems I sometimes had after keypresses was that my fingers would bump adjacent keys as I was moving my fingers and preparing to downpress another one close by. This probably occurred because of the height differential between the fully depressed key, and the height of an unpressed key that's right next to it. As MJ45 said, the dental band actually affects the travel by lowering the start point of the key, which I realized after seeing how the sliders worked.

So far, so good. I'll need to break in this mod for a few days and get a solid feel. This still feels like HHKB and the great feel is still there.

Forgive my lack of expertise/knowledge re installing dental bands on a Topre switch; but can anyone point me toward a video or still-image how-to perform this modification on a Topre switch? I appreciate the assist.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Welcome :)

I think dustin did another very good one, but couldn't find it at short notice.

GH, I have an opportunity to pick up an HHKB Lite2 (black) for $60. I now it's not a Topre board, but is it worth getting? Thanks.

I thought this might be fun to use until I get an HHKB Pro 2. But I have no idea how the membrane key switches feel.

Just went to EK to order a black/printed HHKB. The info page shows stock, but when I went to checkout, no stock. Black and white HHKBs are sold out. I'll have to wait for EK to resupply.

The old adage is true: He who hesitates doesn't get a black/lettered HHKB with an accessory set of gray-and-white lettered key caps with two-day shipping.

awww that's brutal. Maybe they are re-stocking HHKB along with the REalforces at the end of the month.

I finally took the plunge and ordered a white printed HHKB from there and it worked out cheaper than buying from EK (due to shipping to Australia).

Congratulations! Enjoy the HHKB. I gather Smart Imports ships from Japan; not that far from you, mate. I checked smartimports.net; their prices are comparable to EK's. I've done a lot of business with EK. The company has been honorable, I'll likely stay with the company. But it's good to know that an alternative retailer is within my cursor's reach.

I have a dark gray HHKB Pro 2 on backorder. The deed is (almost) done! I may get white lettered caps for it; but I'm not sure that I'll need them. I've been working on a manuscript today and realized that I don't use my cursor keys when I'm writing. Backspace is a must, and the HHKB's DIP switch will convert my Delete key to Backspace, so I'm good. I may have the HHKB next week. The two keyboards I'll be using are my 87UB/55-gram and the HHKB Pro 2 (I just like writing the nomenclature).

I like Topre switches so very much; my 55g has convinced me that key-switch searching, for me, is sending good money after products that I'm only going to sell. I hope and trust this will not be the case with an HHKB; but there's only one way to know for sure. I think my digits will appreciate the feel and feedback of 45g Topres on HHKB's platform.

Hey Aref!  Nice to see you're still around! Hope you've been well  ;D I'm so glad you've finally decided to give the HHKB a try.  In my personal opinion, I think it's the best topre experience one can have.  While I know a lot of people do enjoy the feeling, and audible feedback of the Realforce 87u 55g, the HHKB I think offers the most "fun" and unique typing feel, plus the layout is so well thought out and intuitive. Maybe in the future you could consider swapping the domes from your Realforce into your HHKB to see what you think of 55g case mounted topre switches? Many here on Geekhack have already done this mod and seem to very pleased with the results.

Good to hear from you, brother. I'm excited about the HHKB. I don't think I'd destroy my 55g 87UB, I like this keyboard too much to disassemble it. I'm kind of looking forward to trying the 45g switch on a platform other than a Realforce. I'm looking forward to the HHKB. The mod? I can never say never. But I'll need another 55g Topre keyboard to disassemble. I'll have to report on the KB; I hope to have it by the end of next week.

We're coming form opposite ownership, but will be arriving at the same destination. Indeed, I'll have to DIP switch Delete to Backspace. Necessary for this guy, too. I hope you enjoy your 55-gram 87U keyboard. I think it's one of the best keyboards; perhaps the HHKB will be the other 'best' KB for me. It may be difficult for me to rank one above the other. Did you mod your HHKB or keep it stock? I think you will find the RF a fantastic keyboard with switch feel and aural feedback that is ever so grand. We're both waiting for EK's incoming stock.

The only challenge at first might be typing "\\\\\\\" a lot when you go back to using your 87u!  ;D  You'll quickly learn to efficiently use the two interchangeably though!

Yes. I got a reply from EK saying that the shipment was supposed to be in at the beginning of the month but got delayed. Hopefully they're there by the end of the month.

I had done the dental band mod but removed it about an hour ago. The amount of silence it provided was seriously worth it but the thought of the domes being harmed in the long run made me remove it. I'm planning on using EK's landing pads and lube to silence it later on since I have no choice. Unfortunately, the rebound clack of the slider is a bit too much.

I may have to reconsider doing some kind of modification. If the landing-pad/lube mod works to your satisfaction, please let me know. I'm sure that I'll use it stock for a while. Please keep me posted, if you would.

Did you mod your HHKB or keep it stock? I think you will find the RF a fantastic keyboard with switch feel and aural feedback that is ever so grand. We're both waiting for EK's incoming stock.

The trick with the landing pads is to iron them flat.

Absolutely bro. I was going to wait for the RF55g and order both but I think I'll go ahead and get this out of the way.

I'll be waiting to hear what you think of the modified HHKB. Where did you get your landing pads? I don't see them on EK, they used to have them. You are going to be thrilled with the 55g RF. It really is, in my estimation, an exceptional KB with 55-gram Topres.

Ray, I may need to look for a tutorial to make sure I have a clear understanding of the procedure. You know, now that I'm using the 87UB exclusively, tucked away the MX Red KB, it just feels great; and each day it feels more effortless. If the HHKB feels this good, I'll have the end all in KBs for myself. I known each of us has our own most-favored keyboards.

I thought I did as well when I got my HHKB Pro 2 Type-S and my RF87U 55g Type-S with Digilog case.

But I was wrong... I still have so much want!
