What's your favorite switch and why is it topre?
« on: Thu, 12 February 2015, 18:12:19 »
Just got my HHKB and it feels like I am typing on the lubed up feathers of swans. Why all the hate?

Because they are rubber domes over capacitive PCB. But still rubber domes. That's why. I love my HHKBs though. :)

doesn't feel like rubber dome to me! Or did I convince myself of that after some time?

Topre is awesome though!

So, generally speaking, they are the exception that proves the rule that rubber domes are, by and large, mush?

But I am waiting to try tactile greys. I am excited.

I don't hate it. It is just not my favourite. I would like more tactility and not - in real typing - be forced to bottom out. Typing for a long time on Topre hurts my fingers.
Maybe replacing the domes with some more tactile ones and adding a light coiled spring to each key (like the Topre has on the space bar) would make it the perfect switch.

Wasn't it determined long ago that Topre and IBM do not use "switches"?
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.

Well, there is definitely an electrical switching happening. And it's mechanical action that causes it. So I suppose by a loose definition, you could classify them as "mechanical" with "switches." But strictly speaking, those are not what most consider to be "switches."

I like 62g ErgoClears, but I'm willing to give Topre another chance with a Novatouch and SA keycaps (when I win the lottery or something). I've read that combination is very nice. Probably go with spicebar's silencing mod and maybe 55g domes (and suddenly the price skyrockets even further).

They at least solve one of the biggest flaws of membrane rubber dome boards, the actuation point is not at bottom out, so you don't have to pound on them to make sure they actuate which is much better for your fingers wrists and hands long term health. And the feeling is somewhat different despite the characteristic S-shaped force curve all rubber domes have, partly due to the capacitive sensing spring.

Still a rubber dome, though, and way overpriced. They use a sheet of rubber and some springs instead of individually manufactured switches, they have simpler construction, etc. all of which makes them cheaper to manufacture than a board that has individual mechanical switches and yet they still charge you a massive premium. Great that Noppoo at least are starting to make some similar boards, so maybe we'll see the end of the monopoly, a little bit of healthy competition and lower prices... Maybe.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Favorite switch? 55g Topre, probably, although stock clears w/ the Vortex PBT Doubleshots, on a dampening surface (towel, mousepad, etc) is running a close second.

Although the fact that it takes such a specific combination to achieve awesomeness on the Clears... yeah, gotta give it to the 55g Topre.

Haven't had the opportunity to try a beam spring board yet, therefore buckling spring remains my favorite. Blue alps, vintage (pre '90) blacks, KPT, Topre 55g, Mitsumi Miniature are some of the other switches that feel good to me, no particular order.

Two words: Force curve

I am pretty brand new to Mech keyboards but thanks for bringing those 2 words to my attention. Just spent 20 minutes gazing at graphs, wrapping my head around different forces and how different switches respond. Interesting stuff for a beginner.

Yeah, it seems there are some topics out here that warp opinion one way or another.  A lot of people talk about this or that kind of switch like it's the best switch around.  However it works, as long as it works.  It's really strange and I would guess that a lot of users here have never experienced buckling spring switches at all.  Shame.  I could say any switch is my favorite as an example, but not twist opinion one way or another with the topic.

I have to put my hands up and say I have never had the pleasure. The post title was jokey, and not to be taken seriously as I totally understand everybody is different, and not everybody appreciates things in the same way. I would one day love to get my hands on a BS board and clack away, but I have to save up my pennies.

Re: What's your favorite switch and why is it topre?

Some day I would at least like to try a topre, or maybe own one.  Price seems crazy though when I already am in love with BS and forked out some massive money for them.

One day I will own all the switches. I may not have a home or enough money to eat but god damn it I will know how good BS feels.
