Nonstandard mappings

Sorry in advance if I'm making the noob mistake of posting in the wrong place.

I'm curious about what nonstandard mappings people use for various keys.

About a year ago, I experimented with mapping Caps to Backspace, but I guess I'm a mistake-prone typist, because after a few days of that, my left pinkie was seriously achy. So I switched to the more standard mapping Caps to Ctrl, and I really love that one and have changed all my keyboards.

This past week, I added two more, swapping Esc and `/~, and Backspace and \/|. Which means that for now, I keep hitting backslash instead of backspace, but I'll get used to it. I'm also a heavy Vim user, so having Esc more reachable should be nice.

Also, IIRC, Ecs and Backspace are in those positions on everyone's favorite HHKB.

I don't think I ever hit my right mods, does anyone map out any of those keys? I currently have RAlt mapped to Win on my M, but that's just so that I can actually have a Win key.

Any other good mappings?

Since I went back to my HHKB at home, I mapped the realforce I use at work to switch backspace/backslash and control/caps.

This is on a Model M, you said?

I personally am a big fan of a split spacebar with space on the left thumb and backwards delete on the right thumb. But that obviously doesn’t help you if you have a keyboard without a split spacebar. :-)

Another thing I’m a big fan of is putting the numbers on a layer, something along the lines of

After that it’s possible to use the original number keys for something else.

Full sized space bar is the biggest waste of space on a keyboard.  Caps lock is the second biggest waste of space.

I swapped left control and caps lock.  I have a split space bar, which is absolutely awesome.  I use Autohotkeys to make shift + backspace function as delete.  And recently, I supplemented that with TouchCursor to make space + number keys into function keys, and use the standard TouchCursor navigation cluster around the ijkl keys.  It's what convinced me to convert to a 60% keyboard.  I also dabbled with using the the menu key + e and menu key + b as shift + end and shift + home, respectively.

One thing I'm noticing is that since switching backslash and backspace (ANSI), I often accidentally send messages I'm trying to correct (hitting enter instead of the key labeled backslash). Also noticed some mild pain in my right arm.

Hopefully this is just growing pains.
