Having Problems with Key Cap Set
« on: Wed, 25 March 2015, 13:15:44 »
I purchased a set of DSA Dolch keycaps from pimpmykeyboard.com a few weeks ago. They're my second set of caps, the first being a set of replacements for my Leopold Tenkeyless after the A key on the default set started popping off while gaming.

Some of the key caps wouldn't stay on on the Leopold Tenkeyless as it didn't have any of the metal bar stabilizers for the spacebar, backspace, shift, etc. So I decided to switch the caps over to my Code Keyboard Tenkeyless. The shift keys and return key work just fine with the stabilizers but the white plastic parts that go into the slots on either side of the keys (the ones that hook into the metal bar) fall out on the space bar and backspace key. If I hit the key dead center it registers the keystroke just fine, but if I hit it off center, the key feels awful and sometimes doesn't register.

Is there any way I can get some replacements for the white spacers? I don't know the name of them, so I hope I explained what they are well enough. I've thought about hot gluing them in, or taking some sticky stuff and jamming it into the bottom of the key cap so the spacer doesn't fall out, but I'm not sure if either are a good idea. Ideally I could just order some replacements, but I'm open to cheaper solutions.

Take tape or a plastic grocery bag, cut little squares, then put them over the cross on the inserts. Then shove the inserts into the cap.

Common problem with SP caps.

Awesome. I'll give it a try.

Thank you, friend.

I use that really thin paper that is used for receipts.  Little squares over the holes, then jam in the stabilizer parts.  Nice tight fit (giggity)

Teflon tape
regular tape
thin paper
plastic bags
sandwich bags

Anything you think will be thin and flexible enough will work. I use plastic bags I have leftover from grocery shopping or sandwich bags.

I have found that sandwich bags work best.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I used tacky glue on my old Filco with the Miami set, per Bunny's recommendation.  It worked like a charm, and was easily removed afterwards.

I've used sandwich/ziplock bags as well and they worked fantastically.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I ended up using a leftover grocery bag and it worked like a charm :D
