I've been meaning to do this for awhile.

We have a headphone thread, but nothing for stereo setups and complete listening rooms.

Too lazy to take some terrible phone pictures that wouldn't be worth posting anyway...
My sound set up revolves around my PC, since I mostly listen to digital files these days. I've got an audioengine N22 amp, orb speakers and a JBL/Harman Studio sub. But I do also vinyl and I have a Stanton T60 with a Behringer preamp with USB out.

Next on my list of electronic upgrades is a nice set of speakers and then a vinyl player down the road. Right now I have basic logitech speakers. I have already started my vinyl collection with some limited edition pieces that I didn't want to miss out on, even though I can't play them

hi... if i post all my stuff I'm going to be here awhile... I love me some vintage audio equipment.

my pride and joy is a Sony TA-N77ES / TA-E77ESD/TA-SDP-777ES/730ES/700ES stack in near mint condition i got at a G/W 1/2 sale $75 for all of it (oh yeah and a N110 amp also in the deal)

Speakers are JBL L1's I got at an estate sale a few years ago... excellent speakers:

Paid around 190 for re-shell, and $50 per side for additional faceplate. I'm not good in describing but it does sounds better as its deeper into my ear canel. You can check out at null-audio.com

I have several stereo systems. My favorite one is the system hooked up to this machine. It has a pair of Bose 601 series II speakers and a pair of Venturi V52 bookshelf speakers. Currently running a Pioneer A335 integrated amplifier (The Yamaha A1000 is broken, it took a serious fall....) with an ADC SoundShaper 20 Equalizer. A Technics SLQ-200 semi-automatic Quartz-Field generator Direct Drive Turntable with an Audio-Technica PM9000 Dual-Magnet cartridge and an elliptical stylus. (The Linear-Contact stylus tears up vinyl, so I went with an elliptical shortly thereafter.)
As far as listening to this system, it is bliss. The imaging is spectacular, and there is no way to put it into words. You have to hear it for yourself.

I also have a pair of Minimus-77's I resurrected from the dead when I discovered the woofers on them disintegrated and I had to find replacements for it. I found a pair of replacement woofers for them that actually made them sound better than they were when they were new. They are being used in an AV setup.

I have another project going on, which led me on a tangent to build a new speaker system which I really didn't plan. When it's finished, I will be more than happy to talk about that.

There are a couple other systems I can go on about, but that's for another day.

It's kind of an experiment in a speaker build. I hope everything works the way I planned. I'll know when it's done.
Edit: I have a small snag, some parts I need are coming in next week. I hate waiting!
What is suprising, is if I really wanted to, I could probably finish the build without the parts, just to see how it sounds. I'll be patient and do it right, even though I am anxious as heck wanting to hear them!

I don't have pics but love my AKG 240Ms that I've had from when they were still made in Austria. Mine are still 600ohm.

I also just a week ago turned on our original family Panasonic stereo/turntable/8-track with Thrusters speakers. What shocks me is that they were bought right around when I was born, so they're as old as me and they still work! Some of knobs were a bit crunchy but a couple of turns back and forth and the whole thing came back to life.

IT is ALIVE! Holy Smoke! They KICK HARD! I just had to low-pass (80Hz) to the subwoofers and go full range pass through to the Alpine 6960's. (No high-pass, totally unnecessary!)

In the midst of my "freakout: i own way too much ***" i got rid of my giant desk and am downgrading, as well as downgrading my stereo system. Will have to post next week when all is back up and running :D

Well, if you could, you may experience 3 different aspects of how sound can be experienced. Arena, Hall, and narrow field. Each has it's own effect on the senses. I like image the best of them all. Nothing like hearing music being reproduced as it was intended by the artist.
It's a losing battle with new technology. All I can do is let some people experience what I am talking about, and let them decide what they like.

What does everyone like in terms of the equalization or 'shape' of their sound? Do they like it a bit bass heavy, or sharped highs, or flat, or neutral, or naturalized?

Personally, I've been spoiled by working with a great sound engineer friend of mine. He taught me to hear for things during mixdown and live productions--it's not easy. But then again, we had great equipment as our tools--Sennheiser headphones, Mackie monitors, among the regular stuff like Shure sm58s.

My friend has a set of Mackie powering studio monitors at home for mixdown and that sound has become the reference by which I judge everything else now because of it 'untainted' and very 'true' sound. My AKGs do the same. But now everything else sounds so badly in comparison.

Having a great equalizer is a must. You have to use them properly and adjust the sound to the environment your speakers are in. If you prefer, you can bend the sound to your liking, however, you discover after time that maybe you are "drowning" out essential content.

This is important.

Take a song like "Year of the Cat" by Al Stewart. Listen to it however you like. Then, as an experiment, turn everything FLAT.

Try it.

Then, depending on your environment, adjust your bass and treble frequency up and down until you reach that spot where the song goes full dimension. (You'll know it when you hear it.)

That song was engineered brilliantly. There are others, but it's a good example.

I always aim for a "flat" curve in terms of produced sound. So similar to what snowdog mentioned, I'll adjust the EQ but only to compensate for the environment. I may also mess with things if I "know" the mix is poor and I want to fix it.

(though almost universally, my attitude is to "listen to it as the artist intended")

I've also had great experiences learning from some experienced sound engineers (ran sound for a 5-12 piece band at a church - see the last pic in the OP

), which taught me a lot. I don't claim to be an expert, but I do think it has helped me in my quest for better sound.

Ahh, not only have I found keyboard brethern, but sound brethern as well. I love 'flat' and 'as the artist intended'.

It drives me batty to hear the crap headphones with excess equalization that people are buying for $200. I mean, if people want to throw away their money I guess its their prerogative, but at least give me some.
