Bunch of Model F keyboards

I'd love to buy this lot but it is local pickup only.

Someone in Massachusetts is going to make a killing on that if it sells for that low in a day when it ends.  I counted 8 XTs in the pile, not bad for the $5.50 current bid.  I would pay for the lot at that price and shipping if someone local would send one XT out to me, ha ha.

I'm counting at least two AT's in that pile and several square badge M's.

Somebody on this forum must live up there.

That is a $500-$600 pile of keyboards, easily. At least half again that cleaned and tested working.

I can just see Dorkvader making off with that monster load for a few bucks...

after which his car breaks down due to the weight, and Dorkvader ends up spending $1000 to get it repaired.

so the real cost is ending bid + actual shipping and the actual shipping is at least the cost of a uhaul rental plus gas.
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

Not necessarily. It is not uncommon for at least a zero to be added at the bitter end.

I actually threw in a bid at $80 and would've paid a friend to go pick it up for me but I was not expecting $304. :O

It wasn't so awesome for me to watch. XD I was hoping it would stay under $100, but I still think I got a pretty good deal considering I've spent far more than this on one keyboard alone.

that would have been cool!
i didn't even think about that.
i don't really need one of those F boards, but i would probably jumped on one if there was a gb. ha!

I never saw such a thread either. I would never have sniped this for myself if I had seen a GB thread that had already had plans to claim it, but I didn't and don't currently see one anywhere.

How is it that the time stamp of the final bid is

13:16:15

and the time stamps of the 2 lower bids are

13:16:16

?

Was time running backwards for a second?

Still, $25 each is a very nice price, even if 1/3 of them are not working.

Yeah, I didn't do a very good job of advertising a group buy here. I was working on one. I'm working on a lot of things. Also I tend to be much more active on DT than here. I believe I did mention this on DT.

Please realize that, thanks to some PMs I sent behind the scenes, this auction ended for much less than it could have. Also, that I was working with some folks who could have picked this up locally and saved you a drive. They may still be willing to help you if you PM them.

Xonar: Please PM dorkvader, Ellipse, and SL89 on DT as they were all interested in keyboards from this haul. (I have enough keyboards and don't need any of these, but I was trying to do people some favors.)

More importantly: it would have been good to coordinate. It is just stupid when people who want the same thing up-bid auctions needlessly. I bet that this auction could have gone for less without my snipe.

That's a good question... o.o I'm assuming those two timestamps are supposed to be reversed, but that's still weird.

I'll definitely be PM'ing them. I agree that coordination is good with these things, but the prospect of a coordinated group buy for this would have needed to have been advertised far more for that to happen, as you said.

The winner bid over $307.50 (and we'll never know how much over unless he spills it) at 16:15, and the ones that came a second later didn't beat his bid.  Same as it always works, just not in a few second timeframe like we see here.

I was gonna bid and make a GB here, but yielded to XMIT. I told him to increase his bid to $500. Glad someone in the community got it, and that the total price wasn't *that* high

more importantly: XONAR: are you in the Boston area and can meet? I have an item or two to pick up at that place myself.

My car has about 400 lbs of weight stripped out of it and I put almost 30 KBs in it earlier on my trip to Canada. it would have been fine. MPG was at least 35 highway, fully loaded. The place is 30 minutes away, so fuel isn't that expensive (even though premium went up to $3.20 / gal).

Yikes, that is high.  Regular unleaded is about $2.60 here and that is way up from the $1.70 it was at.  I guess though in the US we have states bigger than many countries so we would be royally screwed in a lot of cases if gas was that high.

Here in Louisville, KY it's around $3/gal. I've noticed that here it's often more expensive here than surrounding cities of comparable size like Cincinnati, Nashville, St. Louis, etc.

I travel to Louisville regularly from Atlanta. Jefferson County requires some special warm-weather blend that drives the price up for part of the year, as I understand it.

We used to have very cheap gas in Georgia, since several major pipelines cross near here, but gas taxes have been increased since our stupid right-wing state government likes to claim that it never raises "real" taxes. Rural Tennessee is the state to buy gas in, for that trip, now.

Forgot to mention this is in Grand Island Nebraska, about 2.5 hours from Omaha, just for reference.  I wonder if we are headed back towards $4.00+.  I haven't been keeping up with this sort of thing lately.

everything has been taken out of my car.

If you bought a KB from him on eBay I have it here with me.

I am organizing with everyone to see how best to deal with this.

Pictures in the first link appear to be about 45 - 50 kbs.
I believe I took home about 78 - 82 KBs today.

I will be posting be in the GB topic from now on https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=72620.0

Back to lurking...

I had no dog in this because I didn't want anything from this.

But seriously, XMIT, if you're going to declare yourself coordinator, then you need to actually do so. Don't just jump in after the fact and yell at Xonar for following the normal SOP of not saying anything until after the auction is ended and discussing the results at that time. As if it was something he missed and he stole it from everyone.

The way I understand it, that was pushed through by the LT governor. He got himself added to alot of ****lists by doing it.

Please realize that, thanks to some PMs I sent behind the scenes, this auction ended for much less than it could have. Also, that I was working with some folks who could have picked this up locally and saved you a drive. They may still be willing to help you if you PM them. [...] It is just stupid when people who want the same thing up-bid auctions needlessly.
I don’t think this kind of embittered/accusatory tone is appropriate if you didn’t say anything publicly here. The rest of us are neither omniscient nor mind readers.

dorkvader and Ellipse definitely aren’t lacking for IBM keyboards, I’m sure they’ll be fine. No idea about SL89.

For this:

It's still true, though. I exchanged some PMs with other potential bidders and we reached an agreement before the auction ended. I don't recall Xonar announcing intentions to bid here or else we would have exchanged PMs and I would have let him go for it.

The lesson I learned from all of this is to check GH as well as DT for such finds, and to announce purchase intentions in both places. (I found this auction independently through my eBay saved searches and announced it on DT.)

In this case everything is working out just great. Everyone who wanted a keyboard is getting one. That's the only thing I really cared about in the first place! Even better, we're helping someone clear a big lot and are getting lots of great keyboards to great people.

Just, what annoys me is needless up-bidding. For most of us this is a hobby and we benefit from lower prices.

If you have any concerns please feel free to send me a PM. I was frustrated to lose the auction but everything has turned out better than I could imagine.

I meant to write in my last post:

This is a pretty small community and we're all friends here. At this point I have enough stuff and am more about bringing more people to the hobby, helping find new sources, and keeping things out of landfills.

Then do not yell at people for behaving normally. If you had instead been the one to post this to great finds and framed it as a groupbuy, then maybe your earlier messages and accusations would be valid. You did not and so they are not.

Part of the issue here is that I assumed that people on GH read DT and vice versa. See:

http://deskthority.net/other-external-f66/great-interesting-finds-gh-has-one-why-not-us-t5700-4830.html

I posted about this find over there on June 1st. This thread started on June 5th. On June 2nd, I said on that thread:

Quote
I'm already conspiring with a forum member to get these. If you're interested, I'd rather you contact me than bid this up unnecessarily. Personally I don't need any of these keyboards but this is too interesting to pass up.

So again, there was just a lack of communication here that we eventually resolved. Just, I believe I found this first, and communicated it on DT as a group buy.

It's water under the bridge at this point.

I am a member of DT but I rarely browse there. I never saw your thread.
I proxy anything including keyboards (キーボード / 鍵盤), from both Japan (日本) and China (中國). For more information, you may visit my dedicated webpage here: https://www.keyboards.es/proxying.html

I've been a member there for almost as long as here. I usually only come here. That is, when I look anywhere. A year has gone by before when I look at neither.

That is a bad assumption, and it does not matter when it was posted if it was only posted in a place that wasn't looked at by potential bidders. It would have made no difference if you had first posted the thread there the 6th. The same events would have followed.

Generally speaking, I only go to deskthority for the wiki. Within about a year after its formation DT seemed to stratify into mainly being Europeans, leaving all the Americans here. Maybe that's changed, I wouldn't know.

Everyone here acted as normal, it's not our fault you made a banner elsewhere and expect us to be psychic. The only real problem is the unwarranted hostility. That was the only reason I've posted in this thread at all. So the main things for next time is to not make accusations like that if literally nothing has been said about anything. And if you do want to setup a groupbuy you should check if there is a thread about it here and if not make one and then inform everyone in either case.
The only other thing is to be aware that there may be some situations where one collector wants all of it and may outbid the groupbuy. Afterall some of the people you mentioned as being interested have several of each type as it is, so it would not be unexpected for this to also happen. It is an auction on ebay, fair is fair.

Edit: And by post here, I mean here in great finds. I don't know about anyone else, but I never look at the groupbuy subforum because it seems to be 95% about a bunch of cherry keysets and there is no reason for me to comb through that.

Part of the issue here is that I assumed that people on GH read DT and vice versa.

Geekhack and Deskthority are different communities with moderate overlap.

Deskthority is certainly Euro-centric and people there are much more interested in vintage gear and technical information, but the social aspect is strictly secondary.

The Geekhack crowd is probably much younger and less experienced, and much more focused on Cherry and Topre keyboards, but it has much more social activity (for better or for worse).

I would say that Deskthority is the better place to go for hard information, and Geekhack for entertainment.

PS - as shipping becomes ever more expensive, Americans will look mostly to GH and Europeans to DT when buying and selling

Well again, I apologize for any unwarranted hostility. Sorry guys.

Hanging out on DT has taught me all about International shipping and I now have plenty of friends to visit if I ever make it to Berlin. The crowd there is entertaining. Differently entertaining perhaps, but entertaining nevertheless.

I suggest checking Great Finds over at DT from time to time. I've certainly posted some nice items over there. (Did anyone here pick up the $14 Coleco ADAM keyboard?)

I'm located in the Austin, TX area. Is anyone else here? If any forum members are passing through please drop me a line. I have all sorts of keyboards at home including: a beamspring, every major type of Model F, some SSKs, almost every type of Alps switch (except blue), several Topre boards including a HiPro, etc.

I also have lots of keyboards for sale. Once things settle down a little bit I'll start offering some items for sale here too.
Look up "Keypocalypse" on DT if you're curious.

Are there any Central Texas keyboard meetups? San Antonio is not too far from home, and I could maybe bring keyboards out to an event in Houston or Dallas. I make it out to the Boston area and the SF Bay Area about once a year each.
