Keyboard suggestion for my company
« on: Tue, 23 June 2015, 05:07:26 »
Hi guys!

I created a start-up back in March this year and I'm now looking for mech board for my 2 others colleagues.

One wants a board with MX Brown and the other one prefers MX Black. I'm looking for sturdy cases so most possibly aluminium/steel made. At first I was looking for boards with good quality stock key caps but as they are not touch typing they want to keep their AZERTY french layout. It is really hard to find these kind of board and I don't want to hunt through the classifieds or whatnot for months just to find one at an expensive price tag hence I'm lowering my key caps requirements. Here comes the ****ty thin ABS key caps!  :'(

I know that Photeqk (already contacted him) is selling some Raptor boards with doubleshot and AZERTY layout stock but the one who wants the MX Black feels that the board is too big for him. In terms of sturdy cases at a reasonable price (120-150€ max per board) I thought of Ducky as I had one before and it seems that they have aluminium/steel cases. Do you have other suggestions, dear GH friends? :-*

I'd suspect a metal (aluminium?) case would be the most difficult requirement to satisfy, so your best bet might be to start there, and find some keyboard internals that you can put into it.

Massdrop has a few aluminium keyboard drops going at the moment.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I don't have the time to build full custom for them and I doubt they'd want it anyway.

Aren't Ducky keyboards made of steel/aluminum? They feel sturdier than a QFR IIRC.

There's that too: http://www.mechkeyboards.eu/#!product/prd1/1281765091/ducky-zero-azerty-brown-switch
But you get thin abs caps. For the one that want black, I could possibly swap the original browns with gater blacks ;)

No they just have more substantial plastic cases. The only Ducky board with a metal case is the Ducky Mini.

Yeah this is my first mechanical board (pretty much as I had the Ducky Zero Shine Zone, the same but with LED). That's what I was considering at first but I thought that maybe there would be other choices that I didn't think of. Thanks anyway.

Fair enough, after some inspection on the Ducky of a friend you are definitely right. I guess my only last requirements is down as well now. But hasn't it a ALU/steel plate or something similar?

Should have a stainless steel plate, just like a QFR. Carter has told me the design trade off in a QFR was a super thick stainless steel plate but a less substantial case.

The only Ducky I found in MX Black in a french store was the Shine 4 which is too expensive (200€).

What do you guys think of the SteelSeries 6Gv2? Did you get to try it?

It's not bad but if your friends want to get into keycap swapping, the layout is a no-go. Otherwise it's not a bad board at all.

Hum I didn't know that it has a different layout. I don't know if they'll want to swap the key caps. In terms of build quality, would a G80-3000 be similar except the non regular layout?

Maybe pricey with convert rate and shipping.

They would be a bit too pricey I think. I'll see with them what they think of it. Thanks again for the suggestions.

Look at the 6GV2 carefully. The enter is an L shape.

G80-3000 doesn't have a plate. I like Cherry boards but I like them better with a plate.

Do you mean no plate as PCB-mounted or as in an HHKB?

HHKB is the only board that does the mounting in that fashion AFAIK.

By no plate, I mean PCB mounted.

I was going to suggest 1800s but they seem to be ruled out, but why is the board too large for him?

Yeah, I use one at home because of the convenience of them. I will soon be upgrading my Dolch with a leeku PCB, which will be pretty cool

He doesn't have a big desk ATM so if he takes a larger board he won't have anymore spaces at all. Do they come with AZERTY ISO layout?

I know that the raptor are Azerty what I didn't know is that a raptor is a 1800. I thought they were 2 different boards. :)

Nope never thought of it. I don't think they want to have a custom keycaps set as it will be the property of the company if it buys it.
