Vortex POK3R Mod?
« on: Wed, 22 July 2015, 12:51:33 »
I'm considering buying a POK3R with Cherry MX Clears as my first 60% keyboard, but as the key-mashing-hulk (love my IBM Model-M) that I am one thought crossed my mind ...

Gateron Yellows on the POK3R is that mod, that could be done?  ;D

Are Gateron Yellows really what they were first reported to be? All recent accounts seem to be that they are the same as Gateron Blacks, which is dumb of course, because why make to identical switches with different colors? I don't know what to believe about the Yellows anymore.

As for if it could be done, sure! Anything can be done! You'd need to desolder the Clears and solder on the Yellows, but there shouldn't be any compatibility issues. You could always put some stronger springs in the Clears too if you want to keep that tactility. It would still require the same desoldering process, since I don't think the Poker 3 plate has cutouts for switch top removal.

Hopefully now that you have come out of lurking you will post more! Do that mod and then show everyone the results. :)

From what i have heard that Yellows should be heaven sent for key-mashing-hulks. Haven't tried them yet, but have gotten an offer to get 105 for ~50$ on top of the ~90 for the POK3R then i would get almost perfect keyboard for under 150$ thats not bad!

But might try the Clears with stronger springs, but i'm not a fan of the tactility per say - would love linear heavy as duck switches  :))

There might go a few month before the mod is done, the wife and I am moving form an apartment to house - all money and time reserved.

Typically the Poker with Clears runs a bit more money than say, one with MX Blacks/Reds. If tactility isn't your thing you might want to go with linears and save yourself the $$. Then get some heavy springs, for example, Spirt has some (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=55888.0). Lube em up and put them in. You'd save yourself a ton of dough compared to buying new switches - and I really do think that the Yellows are not as heavy as they were first reported to be.

Food for thought. :)

Good luck on the move!
