EDIT and if the switch's internals actually stop the key, then any different results from the cap are purely placebo. your fingers might be starting out lower from the desk but they would move the same distance.

if the inner stem sleeve is stopping a cherry from bottoming out, then filing it down (while retaining enough length to keep it in place) would give you more room to bottom out, but the same distance to actuation.

which would be awesome... what if they made a variant of the cherry switch, but with an inch-long stem, and a short enough inner stem sleeve... so that you basically CANNOT bottom out, but the switch still actuates at the same point. might feel awkward at first, but no more bottoming out, ever...

would be awful for games

so the keycaps cannot affect it at all.

right when i was going to bed i realized why it could NOT have been the "inner stem sleeve". imagine trying to put the caps back on after having removed them. the pressure would push the switch down, all the way, and you would never be able to get the cap fully 'on', because every time you tried you would just be pushing the switch in.

Unless your keys are actually molded onto the switches, keys still do have an effect on feel:

- How much of the tactile point is obscured
- How smoothly the switch goes down, depending on the fit of the cap on the slider
- How much over-travel, until you hit the top of the switch casing

Keys have a very big impact on switch feel, its just difficult to quantitatively measure.

My BS board came yesterday, and I replaced the rivets with screws (more than half of them were broken) today... now I just need a PS/2 adapter so I can actually use the damn thing.

But just from banging around on it, I think I'll be voting BS :-P
(And I thought people only voted for BS on the first tuesday after the first monday in november...)

It's a MacBook, so no... but neither does my brother's dell desktop.

PS/2 ports are pretty hit or miss these days. My 1 year old desktop has them, but my 2.5 year old laptop doesn't (the docking station does, though).

The real fun will happen when USB is replaced. And there's talk of technologies that could start to replace it within the next 5-10 years.

USB 3.0 is backwards compatible. You can see where they just stuffed more pins in where it didn't affect the old design. So I think it's more likely that far far later, it still LOOKS like a USB plug, but has a ton more stuff inside. It with glow like a Toslink plug because of its optical connection, etc.

Well, with all the infighting and dubious fragmentation, the previous one wasn't really clear cut.
This one is more about different key designs rather than individual key switches (where the Alps would actually need a poll of themselves).

Seems like a legitimate complaint to me. I don't care if its the best switch that exists, because 1) It's too rare, and 2) It's too much work and research to get it to work with a modern computer.

Well, now that someone revived this, I feel ok posting. Voted BS, but I can't say as I'm a fanatic.
BS by a hair, then Cherry Blue. Topre and Cherry Browns after that, but Topre much more. Do not like Cherry Blacks, even though I have a few. The last time I used ALPS was in the 80s, so I'm not sure I should comment.

I do so miss my Model F+PC/AT, though, lost to time, storage, and relocation...
