You plug it in and leave it on your desk never giving it a second thought?

Oh HELL no.

I have mechs I leave at work but the customs stay home. If I bring one to work it comes home with me that night.

I guess a KUL ES87 with Midnight DCS is an expensive keyboard by most standards...  :p

I leave most of mine at work. Keycaps sets too. No one knows what they are, and it is better than keeping them at home (that just leads to questions). The one that is actually somewhat rare is at home though - my SSK, which is my one true love. That will never go into the office.

I leave a 87u at work. It's pretty inconspicuous so no one really cares.  :D

I leave my realforce on my desk, but I've started locking up my HHKB for some reason. You need your badge to move pretty much anywhere in my building, so I'm not very worried about it. Keyboard looks extremely inconspicuous (minus the artisan caps of course)

If I can leave multithousand dollar equipment lying around on my desk including what would be quite desirable iPoop laptops and such, I think I'll take my chances leaving a generic looking heavy as @!%@ IBM keyboard...

At work I use either a Dell rubber dome, a Rosewill, or a Ducky Shine 3 Tuhaojin. The Ducky is the most expensive thing I would leave on my desk. Besides, I need the tenkey for work stuff, so no TKL or smaller there, which is what all my customs are.

Well considering how rough they were being when cleaning the desk I had to say something.

At one point they would wipe down my keyboard with a wet cloth, I almost had a come apart the morning I came in and there were water spots on my key caps.

The 'boss' of the cleaning crew came in my office once one day lifted up one end of a board slipped a small scrap of paper under the board and then just dropped the end back down on the desk, in her words it was to make sure they were being 'thorough'.

I had blurted out before I could even think, 'please never touch my keyboard again', as it was easily worth a few hundred dollars.

And I've had my own video camera system installed previously to catch any thievery, so they tend to not mess with things.

And like others have mentioned above my office area is restricted by key card access.

Every night, I have an office with a locking door and only share it with one other person. I leave clacks, bros, keysets, other keyboards, etc laying around pretty much all the time  :))

Safe office here! I have my Realforce at work, a NIB SSK in the box, a Meto G81 keyboard, a NIB full size Model M, and my 60%. I'd rather store stuff at work than at home (air conditioning, alarm equipment, access controlled, etc.).

I've asked the cleaning people to not bother my keyboard stuff, so far so good.

Same I did :)

My "office" is the helpdesk so it's pretty free access to the general public. It's locked up after hours and I don't think anyone wants my keyboard but I still don't leave it just in case.

My board gets moved to and from work in my Chiton Grifiti sleeve. I've got a locker at work but other people have keys for it so I don't leave anything of value here.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

I wish I had a desktop PC at work so I can REALLY use my mech and leave it at work. Alas, I'm using a laptop and a TKL is too clumsy. The HHKB , while it is very compact, when attached flat with the laptop still does not give an ergonomic typing position compare to a LCD screen at eye level.

Nobody at work cares about my keyboards.  Nobody.  I even try to entice them with colorful keycaps, but they might give a couple sentences of interest, then move onto something else.

"Why would I need or want a $100 keyboard when this HP keyboard here is quieter, lighter, and perfectly usable?" They all say.

I could but a Kishsaver or one of those fancy Korean customs right in their face, and they probably would take it to the e-recycler.  Terrible.  Just terrible.

So no, I just leave them there, I know they ain't going anywhere.

I have two keyboards (including a HHKB) and a bunch of Bros and **** on my desk. I don't think anyone imagines that they're worth too much.

That being said, I work with security camera software, so we have like 30+ test cameras pointing every which-way, so if anything goes missing I would probably have the event recorded from multiple angles.

I should really just put it all in my desk, wouldn't really be much effort..

I have used a Realforce, a Ducky and a couple of Cherry keyboards at different workplaces. I have a decal on the bottom of each one with my name on it, saying that it is my personal property. My customs stay at home, or in my bag.

I have never been worries so much about theft as I have been about idiots. People squatting at my desk at office parties, well-minded disservice of replacing old-looking equipment and that sort of thing.
Twice: six years ago and sixteen years ago, I have experienced that there had been a break-in at the (current) workplace and someone had stolen my work computer. But never the keyboard. Burglars want things that they can shift easily.

Very true, the only place they'd really be able to sell a kustom or a one-of-a-kind keyboard would be a forum such as this, the same forums the person who lost their keyboard would be browsing.

I think it really depends on the keycap's. A full set with a matching theme on a well laid out board might entice people more than a row of Nyan cat function keys, green Tri-force windows keys and a metallic iron man esc key.

As for reselling them, i'm sure there are more than a few people who would recognize a quality board. A thief would probably get a pretty small cut at a pawn shop.

After bringing my Korean custom to work one day and seeing people trying to pick it up from the desk with a single hand I decided against it. My FC660M has a custom case for it and is small and light enough to walk around with.

My last office job had flexdesks so you never had your own spot.

I might bring one if I had my own office and had a word with the cleaning crew first.

I leave all kinds of random stuff at work, not just my keyboard. But then, I work inside one of the test labs that hardly anybody has access to, including the cleaning crew...

If I was in a cubicle, I'd likely take just about everything home every night.

I work in a hospital lab, my nicer keyboards would easily get picked up by some odd person walking by. They're a too flashy compared to our black/beige dell keyboards

I leave my Ducky Shine 3 with the White Vortex Keycaps along with the wooden wrist rest at the office. People probably take a look at it every now and then, but I'm not really worried that it's going to get stolen.  :)

I leave my blank white HHKB at work, and most, if not all the people in my office, see more value in even the most generic Logitechs than my board. If the day ever comes that it gets stolen, I'll have an excuse to get a new one  :p

I used to leave an SSK at work, until someone complained about the noise during the day, so I swapped it for my Ducky Shine 3 Yellow Edition, with Filco yellow keycaps.

Both of those seem to be a little uncommon, but not especially expensive (particularly as Ducky has their own black on yellow keycap set now).

It is covered with a KeyCool bag overnight, and it's generally not touched in the morning.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Keyboards are notoriously unresellable, hence why recyclers hate them so much. As such I have no fears of leaving expensive keyboards at work.... But I only use somewhat quiet keyboards at work anyway so as to not piss off my colleagues too much xD .

At the end of the day wouldn't it be best to just unplug your keyboard and put it in one of your desk drawers, that way you won't have to worry about the cleaning lady or others. Hell if you got a fancy enough of a desk you could lock it as well.

Mostly just depends what kind of job you have. At my workplace people aren't in their office all that much since we are constantly out doing jobs. Even though I work the helpdesk most of the time, being a tier 2 tech means that I have my own share of jobs outside the office. It's a rare thing for people to be at their desks for more than an hour or two at a time.

Yup.  My F107 just sits on my desk.  But - there are tools and other items that are worth CONSIDERABLY more also on my desk / in my drawers.  This is par for the course on the floor I set on, we all have several thousand dollars worth of hardware around.  I keep my area nice and tidy, everyone who comes to my area to make use of any of my stuff knows to leave it all in the same condition.  They also know I love keyboards.

If I did I certainly wouldn't be telling all of the internet about it.  :thumb:

But you told me.  And I'm on the internet.

Yeah, my board is worth probably $400 not including the Clack but I doubt anyone in my office would think of stealing it.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Where do y'all work where the cleaning staff touch your desk at all?  I figured that was a rule...

Parts of our office get cleaned 3 times a day, our office floor gets cleaned every night, they sweep, mop, take out the trash, wipe down all the chairs, they even wipe down the walls in some areas. As far as the desk go, typically they only wipe down exposed areas but for some reason they think picking up the keyboard to wipe under it is necessary and sometimes they would even 'clean' the keyboards themselves.

funny thing is i leave wallet, phone, ipad and any other stuff i own in my desk. Not everyday but sometimes i forgot, i dont worry and still find them on my desk the next morning. I work in a cubicle by the way.

But never did i leave my shine3 or Model M overnight in the office. I always keep them in the drawer locked, if i dont bring them at home.
