Hello geekhack,

I was just wondering, what sort of specificafions, layout, materials, and features would a keyboard have to have for it to be better than the Poker? Even better, what would make it worthy of the title Poker Killer?

Personally I think the Poker is awesome, but there are times that I wish it had a bit more (like arrow keys) or something.

Would love to hear everyone's thoughts

I own a keyboard that I think fits this. IBM 6019284. buckling spring switches. Reprogrammable with multiple layer support. Steel case. Wonderful retro look.

Honestly, in terms of popularity/sales, Razer/Corsair could market a "gaming" 60% board that has all the features (or lack thereof), and advertise how much deskspace people would save, and that function layers can recover what seems like less functionality. They already have TKL's, so 60%s could be a natural progression.

I really was interested in the KC60 but decided against it because I already have plans for a gateron keyboard and I have more interest in ALPS and ALPS-likes than MX style.

programmable like any 60% should be, which is 100% mappable.
With a software Gon like so it's easy to work on for people that don't want to work on stupid row columns like on FaceW.

Also Gateron switch selection and split Right Shift.

basic plastic case and even possibly pcb mounted build.

Pretty much every Korean 60 I've seen.

Face-W from Sprit, NS 38 (maybe wrong name) from Gon, Mini V2 from Duck, whatever Win keyless has, eagle and viper from Duck, etc.

Alu case for feels, acrylic for light shows.

Universal PCB, tabs for top removal, and a metal case that's normal height. That's about all the poker is missing IMO.

Obviously full programmability with a good UI is a must, but what I'd really like is something that allows me to program from the computer and on the fly (like the Pok3r). Also gateron and matias switches would be awesome.

For available boards, though:
GoN NerD60 PCB and plate, Pok3r case (I got mine from Pexon), your favourite switches (from any source you like).

That's a Pok3r killer and didn't cost much more than one.

Programmable layers, either built-in like a Pok3r or with external software like hasu's HHKB controller
The option to have a fn key and arrow cluster on both sides of the keyboard like the KBParadise V60

Would have to keep the wide 60% aftermarket case compatibility and standard keycap compatibility.
Would have to keep entry price low. This was the Poker X's killer feature. Was the entry point for a huge number of keyboard enthusiasts, who gradually built up their $100 board with custom plate, case, caps, etc. But was still great as a stock board.
Would have to keep the arrow lock mode of the original Poker X (Space + fn locks the lower right 4 keys to arrows).

Have to be programmable, with a quality GUI.
Optional plate.
Optional backlighting.
Optional BT.

Basically a GON Nerd60 with reliable availability and cheaper. If GON came out with a few factory-made versions of his NerD60 I do think he could make a fortune.

Yeah, corsair and Razer could stomp all over the poker series if they wanted to...

There are too many 60% boards that are better than the Poker series for a lot of reasons - many are mentioned here

But I doubt that anyone will create a better selling keyboard - they did a really good job marketing it - so much so that a lot of people refer to the 60% form factor as "Poker" layout

Better in terms of quality, any Korean board, ergodox, tex boards. In terms of price for quality, hard to get significantly better.
