Anyone collect toys?
« on: Thu, 05 November 2015, 16:28:10 »
Before keyboards, before retro video games, before tabletop games, and even before fountain pens, I used to be heavily into toys. I had lots of Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers toys as a kid. When I got older, from high school through college, I parted with most of them as part of my "growing up."
After college and landing my first job, I started getting quite a bit of disposable income. So what did I do? Save it? Sorta. I blew most of it.
(College kids: When people say to save money when you're young, they really mean it.)

I looked back on nostalgia and what material items made me happy as a kid. Toys were numero uno on the list. At first it started with just collecting what I had lost. Then it got way, way out of hand.

I lusted mostly for Japanese figures, namely those by Bandai and Takara. After spending (tens of?) thousands of dollars over almost a decade, I've finally whittled it down to just a few modest collections: Microman, Figuarts, NECA, Gunpla, & MMPR Legacy.
Whew!

Although I’m now on a new, mechanical slippery slope, I wanted to see if anyone else here collected figures. I know Hot Toys and Nendos seem to be pretty popular, but I was never into the 1/6th scale or cutesie figures. 1/12th was my favorite overall, and Microman is my favorite line of poseable figures.

I’m a sucker for blank/model figures, and I was ecstatic when I heard that Bandai is finally releasing their Effect Parts figure models.

And just when I thought I was done with toys…

Oh, snap! I had almost forgotten about those!

I had the original archetypes, both in clear and flesh, but they didn't do it for me. The 2.0s look much better, although a bit more "realistic" than Bandai's models.

I collect TokiDoki and Kid Robot toys.  I've got 21 different toys at my desk including kozik smoking rabbits, cactus cats, unicornos, funko pop toys, and more.

The only wants I really want are Vader and Boba. It'd be interesting to see if they ever do a Luke.

Binge Imma get this one for you.

I kinda got into Kid Robot and Be@rbricks but I just don't get that excited about collecting toys I guess. Of course I say that with a Srihacha Be@rbrick, a Bait x Spongebob Patrich Pop Life figure, and a wool Yoshi amiibo on my desk.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I used to more as a kid and teen. Back east in my mom's basement I have a near-complete Aliens and Predator Kenner line from the first series  to the vs Predator series II. Also a lot of McFarlane toys from the '90s and early 2000s.

The Tortured Souls series is one of my all-time favorites.

I'll snap some pics of my current figures in the next week before I pack them all away :(

Ha! I remember those! McFarlane's toys were the first time I got interested in toys as display items rather than action figures. My uncle used to display old Star Wars toys above his entertainment center in scenes from the movies, and I tried to adapt the same when displaying my old Crash Bandicoot figures. Didn't work out so well.
In college I remember stumbling upon McFarlane's creepy **** when looking for toys to decorate my dorm room. I was in awe of how well the photos promoted the toys, despite how grotesque they seemed. Ended up getting The Matrix's Neo only and had it for many years.

Wow, those blank models are g-or-g-e-o-u-s! Great, I have to get just one sometimes.

Right? These were highly requested for a couple of years before Bandai finally announced they'll be creating them. Before, Bandai would use them to display their then-nascent effect parts accessories; lo and behold, people wanted the blank figures more!

I don't know if Vinyl Toys count - I used to collect them pretty avidly about ~ 10 years ago, intermittently still buy ones here and there when I see something that I love. Still buy some Kaiju occasionally if I come across something cool.

If anyone is interested in seeing some of them, I can always get them out and a take some pictures.
