I don't know from Slickdeals, so I don't mind it.

100% agree. I called this out last week. I don't like the endless Slickdeals reposts (all coming from the same user). I am all for people sharing good deals on their other hobbies once in a while, but this is just plain ol spam.

I made the same comment in the "What's Bothering You?" thread just the other day. Would be fine if any of it were keyboard related, but it's literally almost everything.

I don't mind off topic deals, I just like them to come from users, not large commonly known deal aggregators. There have been some awesome non-keyboard related deals posted in here I would never have known about had no one posted them (pen ink sales are always appreciated), but spam from an aggregator gets annoying.

Interesting discussion point.  I don't frequent Slickdeals, so I've never realized this.

Perhaps the guidelines should be reformatted to accommodate this.

Or just make a Slickdeals of the day thread.  I have no problem with non-keyboard related finds, but the Slickdeals spam is annoying as hell.

I think posting any deal is better than not posting at all, does not really matter to me where the deal is.

I'd be amenable to having a separate distinguished section. Pretty amusing that nobody has ever complained in the 2+ years I've been doing this until now. You've had all this time to put in a complaint and you haven't. Why not?

Slickdeals is not the only site I browse to look for deals and you small minority complaining act as if Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the holidays aren't coming up. The volume of deals that pop up are always much heavier during this time of the year. Also, I try to filter out things that I think are most relevant to people's interests.

And until very recently, I didn't see very many other people posting deals here until Karura made a discussion post about the finds here. This Great Finds subforum was very much inactive when I first joined this forum and I helped turn it into something more when I started actively posting. I don't see the lot of you (who are complaining) spending nearly as much time as I do daily trying to find great deals for everyone on the forum.

Thanks to everyone else for the support. I will be continuing to post deals as I have to help everyone keep getting great deals on stuff.

Good.  Keep posting your stuff.  I especially want to see what Black Friday deals pop up.

For the complainers - is it that difficult to ignore threads you don't like?  Stuff that nobody's interested in will drop and you won't have to see it again.

I'd like to address the point separately.

Yes, a few people complaining about "non-keyboard" posts are regular contributors here.

But a good number are not.  If you're not contributing, be quiet about those who are.  If you want to make the sub better fit your ideals, find great keyboard related deals and post them.

is it that difficult to ignore threads you don't like?

when it is over 50% of the threads, yes, it is difficult. This is a primarily a keyboard forum and it is a simple matter of moderation.

let's say I started posting a new thread in the OT section every time I read an interesting article that GHers would like. Let's say that I did this so much that over 50% of the threads were my topics. That would be over the top and it would be expected for people to complain, because it's a failure of proper forum moderation.  I may have great intentions and even post interesting links, but it is still abuse of the forum.

same thing here. Great thing though, we can just create a sticky thread to contain non-keyboard items. or it can be a thread for missalaire's updates only. whatever works. The current quantity of off-topic deal threads is just too extreme, to the point the forum is losing its focus...

Even though I said I'd be amenable, you're still not understanding that the volume of the deals being posted currently is not a common occurrence. Personally, I don't think a higher volume of deals posted around Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the holidays warrants the need for a separate section entirely. Once those events are over, things will trickle back down to normal. And as long as most people aren't bothered, I don't see the problem. It really just seems like you two in particular have issues with it.

I do understand what you're saying about seasonality, but I am still in favor of re-organizing somehow. I will say nothing further on the matter, I have already made my points as best I can. It is not my goal to discourage or bully you, missalaire, and if you had a separate thread I would check it. Your links have helped me in the past, this is purely about forum organization, not the value of these contributions in the abstract.

It's not only missalaire who does it.  It is primarily though.  If you want me to say the name, I can, I have no problem with that, I just thought it was more tactful to do so without it appearing as a personal attack.

It hasn't been ridiculous until lately.  It honestly feels like anytime anything remotely computer related gets posted to Slickdeals, it immediately gets posted here.  Those links also break the Great Finds sub rules since they are referral links.  As for no one else posting, I used to actively post keyboard finds I made in here as well as other interesting finds in here.  I haven't felt like it lately and haven't been digging for stuff like I used to.

My feeling has always been that Great Finds should be for user found deals and not deals from well known aggregators.  I'm always more than willing to see deals that people may have found on another enthusiast forum or something along those lines, even if they are not keyboard related,  but front page deals on well known aggregators are just spam.

And in no way do I mean this as a personal attack, you have posted many interesting deals in the past, I just think we either need a separate aggregator thread, an thread with aggregator links, or to cool it with all but the best or most relevant aggregator deals instead of posting a dozen or so Slickdeals posts a day.

I think this would be reasonable. I look to this subforum for interesting ebay links or interesting site listings for tech related stuff, not for flash sales of computer/tech gear. But some people do like that, so it would make sense to at least segment it.

Much as I hate to agree with everyone, I do feel both missalaire and those expressing their distaste for the current state of the subforum have valid points.

To fail to credit missalaire for making this subforum a place of renewed activity, or to trivialize the time and effort she puts in for all our sakes is quite simply rude.

On the other hand, missalaire's posts account for well over half of the top threads in this forum, and very few of them are related to keyboards, ostensibly the focus of this site.

For my overpriced two cents, I believe that having a "Great Keyboard Finds" section and rename this "Great Non-Keyboard Finds" should resolve the issue. Due largely to missalaire's efforts, I believe the subforum is active enough to sustain such a distinction.
