For switches, I don't like really anything linear.  I have tried Cherry Reds and Blacks and didn't care much for them, but I haven't tried any Gateron switches so I can't say anything for them.

For keyboards, I just don't like flimsy feeling keyboards.  As long as the build quality is high and and the keyboard is sturdy, I don't have much preference for the materials used.

Just be glad Demik is muted.

Lol he loves his HHKB but he did own at least one very nice non-Topre board that I know of, maybe more.

I wonder if he ever found his 356 Mini. Probably did and trashed it.

Mx clears I guess. Not a massive fan of the Reds but they're better then the fatigue inducing clears.

Mx Browns, I choose you.

not so much a keyboard, but the (lack of) stabilizers on so many keyboards.
no stabilizers, badly-working stabilizers, crappy-feeling stabilizers.....
i have a few very nice keyboards, but barely use them because i get tired so quickly of the nasty stabilized keys.
and whoever thought it was a good idea to put a huge shift key on a keyboard, and then don't stabilize it!? pfff :( despite its size, it still only functions if pressed exactly in the middle. should've just gone with the Model F XT approach!

I strongly dislike HHKB. I tried it a few times, started to like it, then really liked it, but then got over the novelty and now it's just an overhyped rubber dome with better than average build quality. No better than my old Microsoft rubber dome. So many people have drunk the cool aid though.

it's silly to assume that everyone who likes the HHKB only likes it because of the hype.
i can understand why you'd dislike the hype around it, however.

that said, there's really nothing wrong with (liking) rubber dome.
any "keyboard newb"-guest that i've had over, who would type on a bunch of my keyboards out of interest, every single one of them liked Topre over anything else i have, including cherries, complicated alps, F-BS and M-BS. (are they all HHKB hype cool aid people now, too?)

so...
is it too expensive? maybe
is it hyped? definitely
but is it possible for people to legitimately like the HHKB? well, absolutely!

don't become a 'HHKB hater' man, it's silly.

I intentionally used "dislike" because I am not a hater of the HHKB.  However when I hear/see people say "I gotta get a HHKB" even though they've never used one does make me skeptical that they have any legit reasons other than hype.  I said "so many" instead of "every". Yes there are legit reasons for liking it, and there are several members that I deeply respect who have far more knowledge than I do who love the HHKB. They aren't the ones who I'm talking about.

Anyway I'm sorry if I offended you.  I did not mean you personally when I made the cool aid comment. Maybe I should have just left that out. If people like it then great!  If you like it then great!  My main point is that I strongly dislike the HHKB because it fails, in my opinion, to live up to the substantial hype it has.  I dislike the keyboard, not the ones who use it!

you didn't offend me at all!
the 'cool aid' comment just made your post look like it was a 'hhkb-hater post' (to me, at least).
so i figured i'd take my turn to defend the concept of preferences. but of course i know that the HHKB is hyped, and i also know that plenty of people will buy, and even defend it because of hype - but not me! besides, i am not that crazy about the HHKB.

anyway, sorry if i came off offended.
i see your point and i agree about the entire hype thing. it's a real shame.
and i can also understand that you feel it didn't live up to its hype, because it doesn't. in the end, it's just another keyboard! ;D

thanks for the reply!
cheers

For switches, I don't like really anything linear.  I have tried Cherry Reds and Blacks and didn't care much for them, but I haven't tried any Gateron switches so I can't say anything for them.

not all linears feel the same (at all)!
for example, i'm not crazy about cherries, but my complicated green alps are a different story. i also have hi-tek linears, which are also way different in sound and feeling!
of course, maybe you just don't like linears at all, but disliking blacks and reds certainly does not mean that you dislike all linears! :p

I hate ISO!

This is what I think of - I hate ISO, but after using it for 17 years, I can't shake the muscle memory. I also have to use it class but I took my board in for the first time and it was glorious.

Funny, they're the Cherry switch I like most xD .

I think it's funny how, when there's something like an argument, it's always about Topre and HHKBs. Faithful as IBM supporters are, if there's one board/switch people get religiously attached to, it's Topre and the HHKB :p .

Who knows, one day... xD

Keyboards
I hate anything smaller than full ANSI 104 unless it is going to be connected to my iPad. I hate anything that doesn't provide a modern Filco-style layout.

I hate laptop keyboards and anything with flat, chiclet style keycaps.

Switches
I can't stand clicky switches, and I especially hate clicky switches found inside IBM keyboards (or any of IBM's imitators).

I hate any switch that can't take my SA and DSA keycaps without a slider mod. That includes Topre even though I like how they feel.

(I think it goes without saying that I also hate cheap membrane keyboards.)

I hate the stereotypes people throw on switches. Blue is for typing. Black is for gaming. Tactile is for all-around. And so on!

Switches are all preference, some like light clicky, some like to work on their Arnold Schwarzefingers heavy linear boards. The hatred is further exasperated by someone coming in like a know-it-all and sharing how much they hated a switch when it's all opinion, but you can tell that they are convicted by and sold on the messaging provided by the switch marketing claims. Ugh!

This is the biggest problems with the masses of threads by people asking for what the absolute best switch for them. Outside of a select few factors (like hysteresis making the fastest tapping somewhat odd), its basically all preference. And it gets said time and time again in those threads, yet new users keep posting them. Guess that's the price the forum pays for increased popularity.

Yup. I tried like every switch variant, to finally decide that hysteresis is annoying as hell to me (ALPS changed my life). I also found out my combination of 50g + Vintage Black makes for the ultimate MX experience to my fingers. :)

As much as I'm not huge, using truly smooth linears for the first time really is an amazing experience.

Also, nice to see another VA person around. Whereabouts are you?

Never actually tried them, but I'm almost 100% positive MX Greens would be my least favorite stock switch.

I once put Clear springs in blue switches, and holy crap it was the worst typing experience of my life.

I'd advise trying vintage blacks. I'm really not a fan of the scratchyness of new cherry switches, but when smooth they're the best.

Might be considered too obvious but.. I hate Apple "butterfly" switches. Not only because of how they feel but because what they represent and because Apple had appropriated the word butterfly for their switches.
The newer desktop Apple keyboards are very close in appearance and key travel although not "butterfly" - but they are just as bad.

"Hate" is too strong in my case. I usually find something to like about almost any switch and keyboard. However, as much as I have tried to like various Cherry mx switches, they are my least favorite of all. Within the mx family, my least favorite is the mx clear switch. I think it is because it has a steeply rising force required for displacement beyond the actuation point, making this switch fatiguing for people like me who like to bottom out their keystrokes.

Not quite switches, but I hate Cherry stabilizers in comparison to Costar, Costar just feels so much better, and doesn't feel like a pressing down on porridge.

Oh damn I see, I've yet to try anything split  :p

I dislike MX-Clear (too stiff) MX-Red/Black (need some tactile feedback).

Are Clears really that stiff?  I guess I'm used to Blues and Greens so maybe that's why they don't feel stiff to me.

I hate anything that doesn't provide a modern Filco-style layout.

You mean the standard ANSI layout? It's got nothing to do with Filco.  :p

My Topre RealForce board is a standard ANSI layout, but it is not Filco-style. Just compare the bottom row to see what I mean. I prefer 1.25u mods and a 6.25u spacebar on the bottom row, a design popularized by Filco.

Hehe, I'm the opposite here--I wish more people used 6U bottom row (1.5-1-1.5-6-1.5-1-1-1.5). It's been impossible to find keycaps for MX though.

If demik was a judge: "Do you solemnly swear that you will use the HHKB, the whole HHKB, and nothing but the HHKB?"

I personally don't have hatred towards many switches, but I haven't tried that many. I just really don't like bad rubber dome keyboards.

Just be glad Demik is muted.

Lol he loves his HHKB but he did own at least one very nice non-Topre board that I know of, maybe more.

I wonder if he ever found his 356 Mini. Probably did and trashed it.
I did. And I recently threw it away along with an mx mini because they are terrible ****ing boards with terrible PCBs.

They are deffinitly a lot stiffer coming from blues for me, but that's why I like them so much. Blues are too light for me, greens are just the right weight f, but they are to loud for the keyboard that i bring to class with me. Im also a lot more accurate on clears, i only get about 80 or so percent accuracy on blues, but in the high 90's on clears

Custom 60% with Cherry MX Clear

I hate mx blacks, reds, and silent cherry switches. They feel like scratchy crap.

I'd advise trying vintage blacks. I'm really not a fan of the scratchyness of new cherry switches, but when smooth they're the best.

Eventually I will, for now, linear green alps I got a few days ago from eBay :p
oh yeah I saw that crazy **** if that doesn't win I'm deleting my account

Haven't typed on many switches yet, but so far not a fan of reds. I need that click/bump.

Oh, and the new Apple butterfly switches in the new Macbook keyboard, if those count. God damn, that zero travel sucks ass.
