Novatouch TKL: Does it sound different than RF 87u?
« on: Sat, 16 January 2016, 00:35:36 »
Looking at Youtube videos of the Novatouch, they all sound so different from one another, which makes me think the microphone and/or its positioning is responsible for much of the variation. So that's why I thought I would ask here.

How is it different from RF boards in the sound department?

Thanks!

Real good question..

Perhaps not directly an answer to your question..

So a couple of days ago i bought the Leopold FC660C topre keyboard because i love the Size..
And i own the FC660M with mx-clears.

There are a couple things on my mind i wish to share with you and of course anyone reading this post.

i tried the NovaTouch for a second standing in a store..
While a kid working there was hovering over me and my wife like a vulture..
He was apparently amassed by the price (being so high) and level of packaging, he also had no clue what a key-cap puller was.
Until my wife told him "That's a key-cap puller" hahahha  :) Can you imagine a girl that has no intrest in anything having to do with tech or keyboards telling someone that works at a computer store what a key-cap puller is for ?? dear god !!

But after reading this post and seeing earlier posts in regards to modding i Started to think about the potential of the NovaTouch..

According to a couple of people these rings really improve the feel and sound of the NovaTouch
help-f53/silencing-rings-for-topre-rf-or-hhkb-t10051.html

And there is a keycap set that is supposedly the best one to use with this keyboard..
"Signature Plastics SA profile Thick ABS"
Adding sum dampening material this keyboard could possibly be the greatest invention since sliced bread hahaha  :ugeek:

In summary To mod this keyboard ..Would cost an additional;

$50 best Keycaps for this board
$65 Topre rings
$30 Silens material like VibraFlex mats to cut and stick to the inside of the case.

Total $145 on top of the Store Price..So if the NovaTouch were around $110 it would be ideal for a pimp up mod project like this.. Competing and surpassing the likes of RealForce And Leopold ..

Because one awesome thing about the NovaTouch is that you can use Stock Cherry mx caps..

I would even go so far an try to trow in a teensy to make if fully programable using a OpenSource solution provided by the guys from InputClub.. So no need for expensive R&D hahaha..

Well that's my view of this keyboard with great Potential.. Of course it would take a great deal of time and effort..
But it would be like modding your Case..

Nah the stabilizer is really rattly and not worth the money my advice is just get a realforce or hhkb to get the real experience of topre keyboard  :thumb:

The form factor of the NovaTouch and MX keycap compatibility is a big draw for me. If I buy one, I might swap the stock domes for Topre domes, though. But seriously, the deficit of available PBT Topre keycaps is a serious drawback for Topre owners who like to mod their boards. The ability to use MX keycaps is a real incentive to me. Of course, you could always harvest the stems from a NovaTouch.

the realforce and novatouch use different domes.  Not sure where CM gets its domes, but they are different than hhkb or realforce 45g domes.

They look practically indistinguishable from what I've seen. The composition of the rubber is different though, I'm sure.

The Space bar is louder on the Novatouch. Other than that there is not much difference, in my opinion.

I thought it was a great review up till the part where he says O-rings help with the rattle.

They don't.

Is there no way to fix the rattly spacebar?

Not sure if anyone posted this yet but it has some good info about silencing the novatouch.

It sounds different with the stock keycaps and more prone to rattle, from what I understand.

I found it also to be louder though I've only ever typed on it in a store.
