Who Would do this to an SSK?
« on: Thu, 10 March 2016, 21:58:48 »
I hope this isn't being sold by a member here.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-Model-M-Space-Saver-Keyboard-/131745326300

[cue "In the Arms of an Angel" and Sarah McLachlan voiceover]

Will you be an angel for a helpless keyboard? Every day, innocent keyboards are abused, beaten and neglected, and they can't cry out for help.

Please, visit the ebay link on your screen, and for just $200 (OBO, probably a much lower one) you’ll help rescue this keyboard from its abuser, and provide new caps, cord, and maybe do something about that horrid case paint job.

Purchase online in the next thirty minutes and you’ll receive the relief from the guilt of this horrible commercial.  Right now there’s a keyboard who needs you. Your purchase says ‘I’m here to help.’ Please buy right now.

The keycaps make it so much worse. Did he paint the original keycaps!? That color doesnt look like Unicomp.

Yeah, I saw that the other day when it was listed. Pretty hideous. Masking a label can be tricky, but .....

I think I remember him saying that he had dyed the caps black himself. This is one for somebody who likes some of the wonderful new colors of spray paint from Rustoleum.

No, only cosmetic.

A good paint job on the case and a fresh set of caps and it will be good to go for another couple of decades.

The board has endured so much emotional damage it will never be the same.

If I was the seller, I'd have that piece of art listed at $500 and include different examples of how to display it.

Did he paint the original keycaps!?
He wrote that he had boiled them in black dye - which is the best way to dye PBT keycaps.
He also installed a modular jack at the back.

That does not sound like a clueless n00b to me. Perhaps he is even a member here, or at least he must have visited this place at some time.

I just hope that he did not dye the original caps from the SSK. Those should have special legends for the integrated numpad.
There should be plenty of regular Model M caps around for dying.

Thats what I was thinking. If he painted the original SSK keycaps they could have been brought back like the rest of the board.

Ouch.

Given its condition, could be a base for someone to try to make an industrial-like SSK, but properly?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

The black case isn't so bad, but those keycaps look nasty.

Order a nice clean set from Unicomp and it will be good to go.

The first thing I noticed was that the bumps are on the wrong keys. Seller obviously has no idea why those exist.
