So I have a Topre. That's it, then?
« on: Sun, 13 March 2016, 21:11:07 »
I have my Unicomps and my Model M, now I have this Topre Type Heaven that really has blown my mind. It's pretty much everything I've wanted in a keyboard and I'm kicking myself for not getting one sooner, or a Realforce.

I've played with the Cherry switches, I'm not much of an Alps man and while I love my buckling spring, I'm sorry, these Topre switches just nail it.

The Type Heaven is solid enough for the price and I get the the ABS keys aren't in the same league as the PBTs on the Realforce. They had to cut some corners to get the price down. If I didn't know the PBT keys were that much better I wouldn't care.

So the way I see it, I have a future Realforce purchase in my future, and that's about it. Is this really the end of the line? Can anyone give me a reason to look beyond this for any reason? Has anyone migrated away from Topre switches to something else and can offer a compelling story?

In b4 HHKB.

But seriously, I've introduced a few people to topre through the type heaven and they've been using them ever since. In my opinion it is a great board and even though the caps are ABS they aren't awful.

I say until you find a reason to be unhappy with what you've got look no further. :)

Topre may be the endgame for most, but it can still try to break you! Sure, you've got a Type Heaven. Now you want a Realforce.  Then, the HHKB whispers will get louder until you can no longer resist. Even then, the forbidden fruit of SA keycaps on Topre will be calling your name, and you'll just have to get a Novatouch.

Good luck, and may God have mercy on your soul.

At least capitalize the glorious switch type. It's like you don't really care about Topre.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I suspect that when you buy a topre keyboard and because of a high price you pay, later you dont admit that its not that different or maybe I should say much better than MX switches. Or maybe I am wrong about that, but the price for topre, hmm,  lets look at HHKB2 is really high, 200$ or 300$ for type S. Becuase I am from EU this means I pay the tax of 22% and then the custum cares (at the border) and the shipping costs. That makes price go up to heaven.

and then when I think about HHKB:
a this price not illuminated
not programmable (could go with hasu but add another amount of $$)
and probably later not satisfied with keycaps

But people still believe in it. Dont understand this.
I just saw someone sell his hhkb for 250€, a used one...

I ll wait for HHKB 3 or something like Whitefox... hopfully its all programmable and much different than the way it is now.

But then again a really have to find someone with topre to test it myself.

For the price it sells its a con. Why ? Because when you have a cloudy day or when it becomes dark in the room the LED lights really make a difference. I am able to see the chars easily when using LED.

People keep bringing up the prices of a typical Realforce/HHKB board, but they almost always forget about the dye-sub PBT caps that they come with. They are far better than the other dye-sub PBT keycaps I bought from Imsto, which cost $90.

So when you consider a typical Cherry MX board costs around $100, and a set of Imsto caps cost $90, a Cherry MX board with a set of caps that are-not-as-good as Realforce caps cost around $190, which isn't that far from a typical Realforce board.

If you are comparing Realforce to MX keysets you will see some variances in kerning, but don't let that scale your opinion. Realforce delivers! Cherry Mx is Digiorno! I'm kidding of course, it's all relative.

I completely agree with this. The Realforce/HHKB dyesubs are seriously one of, if not the best caps around. Although I would say that they could be a little thicker, the texture and overall quality is up there.

I"m really glad I went straight from MX Blues to Topre without noodling around too much in the Cherry world. I still really want to try Matias Quiet Click, but I can get one off Massdrop for under $100 if I ever get too curious. It's a cult. Topre is a cult, there's no question about it. Glad OP eventually found his way down the "right" path. :thumb:

This is so true. Even the cost of a Pok3r and a set of Granite would cost you the price of a HHKB. I mean, yeah you could get an MX board for under $100, but the phrase "you get what you pay for" holds pretty true in the keyboard world.

I completely agree with this. The Realforce/HHKB dyesubs are seriously one of, if not the best caps around. Although I would say that they could be a little thicker, the texture and overall quality is up there.
They're nice, yeah, but compared to other PBT dyesubs they're not that great, arguably even somewhat lacking :/ .

Which PBT dye-subs are you talking about, chyros? Because I have a set of PBT dye-subs from Imsto which cost $90, and the Topre ones are much better. The plastic is so soft on the Imstos that my keypullers leave indents on them.

They are probably referring to thickness. But more thick does not always equal more quality. Insert whatever joke you like here  ;)
The texture, shape and profile are unmatched. The only other caps I've tried that come close are the dye subs that come on Varmilo boards, surprisingly. But I haven't tried too many caps so I'm no authority on the matter.
How does one become so interested in a thing like keyboards? When you realize you use a keyboard more than any other tool in your life.

55g Realforce and a PBT spacebar. It's all you need. No need to look past anything, unless you want to get into ergonomics- then just get a uTRON ^_^

After going through
Cherry MX, Blues,Greens,Browns,Reds,Clears
Kailh Blues,Browns
Matias Quiet Clicks

Having discovered i loved 55g Topre so much  "That's it then?" was more a sigh of relief from constant board buying.  All i want now is perhaps an Artisan for my ESC key and either a HHKB for travel or a RF in white to polar opposite my black one.  No interest in the Novatouch/Type Heaven.  I'm glad i can finally start selling some of my boards that have been in boxes for months to reinvest the funds lol.

With that nondetachable cord, it'll even be useful in the future when the robots take over. Just swing it around over your head. Maybe get two.

Realforce feels different than the typeheaven. In a good way.

I have a Ducky 104 45 G Uniform Realforce coming today.  This will be my first Topre board.  Pumped to try it coming from Blue and Browns!  Have they ever made a 103 or 104 55 G Uniform Silent Realforce?  I feel like I would prefer a heavier switch so I'm thinking if I like the Topre switch, a board like that would be my endgame.  With a PBT spacebar of course!

Been there, after I tried various Topre stuff, that's what I still had to try:

Korean custom with super-smooth linear switches (typing on one!)

68-key layout keyboard with RGB backlighting

60% keyboard with white or blue complicated alps and a metallic case, and maybe RGB backlighting?

My first impression of the Topre is kind of weird coming from the browns and blues.  I would like to give it a shot for awhile, but man do I hate the bright white keycaps on the Ducky Taiwan version!  Way too bright for me!  Man, I really wish there was a black on black 103 or 104 key 55g silent version out there!  Why are there never the versions we want??    :'(

In my opinion, it's Topre all the way for a work keyboard.  They just have the perfect feel for comfortable, quiet typing.  I just wish they weren't so expensive, but at least they feel expensive when you type on them.

Iv'e honestly come to even prefer mine for leisure like gaming or casual surfing...it's just that much more comfortable to type on.  I am keeping one of my MX Brown boards but aside from that i'm selling off the remaining 6-7 boards i have left and going full on Topre.
