Hi, I'm Elven and I'm making Keyboards =D
« on: Sat, 07 May 2016, 08:35:14 »
So as you may be able to read, my name is Elven. My actual name is Conor but it's whatever :P You can find me at http://www.steamcommunity.com/id/ElvenDemon

I've read a few articles on here in pursuit of my passion for gaming and the ultimate keyboard. Of course, I am now traveling backwards and designing/making something in my backyard. A keyboard! I'm making a keyboard from scratch. Custom PCB, Custom Case, Custom design for Keycaps, Custom RGB Lighting all to suit me. Yes, me. While you think, "Wouldn't it be cheaper to  buy some "insert Taiwanese made brand here" online?" Well, I managed to come up with a way to create the case and PCB, ordering in Cherry MX switches, RGB LED's and still costing less than a "Ducky Shine RGB 5" which yes, just so happened to be a Taiwanese brand. If you are interested in further banter, enquiry or making your own keyboard or buying one of me, you can head over to my post at: "Such and such a link to be added next edit" or add me on Steam/Skype. Details are on my profile!

Goals behind this: Make and possibly sell a TKL Case for a Phantom PCB, make a small profit, make some friends, replace crappy broken silicon-dome keyboard I loved so dearly, get a life

Thank you =)

I actually read "Hi, I'm Eleven and I'm making keyboards"

So, nope, I wasn't able to read.

Welcome to Geekhack!

The best place to start looking for construction tips is making stuff together.

If you felt like migrating some of your other content into your own build thread, you'd probably get a few more hits ;)

Apart from that, there is not a huge amount happening in the keyboard scene down here (with Rama being a notable exception!) so any such activities are welcome :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Actually I read it as "Elven" and wondered if you had an interest in elves.

Welcome aboard glad to see another user interested in PCB design. The latest GH60 rev.C KiCad files just dropped and I have been looking them to add some RGB lighting capabilities to it. I plan on releasing anything good as OSHW so no profit for me I love the Open Source community and philosophy and I also have a job that pays me so I don't really need anymore money (probably would just spend it on more keyboards anyway).

Can't wait to see what you come up with!!! I probably end up buying one from you... :p

The pic is a rip from google images, had for a few years now. I do actually have ones that I've made, like what I use on Steam but cbf putting them on here haha.
As for the keyboard, at the moment I'm studying for exams! Once I finish the catchup stuff for actual Electronics class I can get more into keyboards. (Y12 Australian Student = RIP social life, can't wait for uni =_=)

Will put the post up when I finish my prototype and see where the interest peaks from there. Thanks for the warm welcome peoples :)

Did someone say PCB design?

There's a thread for that!

Also PCB junkies should definitely have a look here!
