What happens when you reach end game?
« on: Thu, 19 May 2016, 08:08:40 »
I am truely curious. What did you do? What hobbie did you take up, or did you just continue buying for the sake of buying?

For some context I will explain.

I feel like things are going to go as a really good movie or book does. 1. You read it and love it and get into it and can't put it down. 2. You grow an attachment to it 3. You get to the end and feel like a loved one has died because there is nothing left, and it's over

When I first became apart of this hobby I looked at all the keyboards and liked all the designs and keycaps, regardless of the profile,  colour scheme (well most) or the layout. Now that I have been apart of this hobby for a while my tastes have become more and more refined, i.e. I look at unicorn vomit and SA profile and want to chuck my guts myself. This has saved my wallet but has made end game become more approachable, and I am almost near end game as far as key sets go. All I need is Peacock and desko and I'm done

In regards to layout 1800 is pretty much perfect for me and I will probably design and build a custom specifically around that, and finally have my perfect keyboard. Everything else (i.e. topre, alps) is just collecting it for the sake of trying it

And as far as artisans go? I think 97% of all current designs are ****ing horrendous because A. The colour scheme doesn't actually match many keysets that look nice and B. The sculptor has no sense of what looks good (i.e. the balance between KISS and damn there is detail in that) or alternatively C. which is "What the **** is that actually meant to be it looks like a foreskin"

****post relentlessly

I mean I'm pretty much at my end game boards right now, so I really just sit back and enjoy the community. I've made some good friends here, and enjoy talking with them on a daily basis.

And it's always awesome to see what else is coming down the pipeline, from artisans to keyboards.

woops sorry, this isn't an off topic thread. I will avoid ****posting.

Anyways, I believe I reached a plateau. Although, I don't have that one keyboard I ultimately love, I have reached a point where I am comfortable with the variety of keyboards I have.

I see my self returning to old hobbies such as running or maybe picking up skateboarding again. I am really trying to return to my old social self instead of isolating myself on this website.
I don't think I will be buying anything keyboard related in the next few months. It really depends on the person as to what happens next. Some stay to socialize, stay up to date with the community, or ****post like me.

If you just want to type, you end there. If you're a collector, there is no endgame.

Socializing is quite different from finishing off a hobby though, did you move onto anything else when you felt like you were pretty much done? Or did you just become content in relentlessly ****posting?

There is a difference between collecting and hording though, and I have very specific keyboards in mind that I want to get to 'finish' the collection

What happens next?
You can pack your endgame in a box to store it somewhere and try to reach another endgame.

As others said, there's no end game. But it's all about the journey not the destination

I think the whole point of collecting is hoarding, more or less, the two words are virtually synonymous anyway xD .

I'll happily admit I'm a relentless hoarder though, I'm at 80 or so different models and I still want more! :D

First you think end game is an M, then you try an F. Then you think it doesn't get better than that. Then you try a beam spring, and then you think end game is that. And then you try a Selectric....

I'm not sure, but USB typewriters (not even electrical ones) do exist and are commercially available.

Ok. It's hard to imagine non electrical usb typewriter and I don't see any point in it. Conversion of an old legend is something different.

Switch to different hobby !  Haha I actually started with gaming mouse first, then after I got the mouse I want I move to keyboard, now I'm currently in headphone.

Mouse are fairly cheap, a decent mouse will cost you around $80.

Keyboard gets a bit expensive, typically you're looking at $150-$200.

Headphone can range from $200 for a decent one and go all the way up to $2000.  My current headphone is about $300.

So we'll see where this goes.  :P

I don't think anything will change. I mean, for one, even if I get my "ideal" keyboard, I'd still want a couple of others so that I can change up the typing characteristics now and again.

Also, in the real world, what will probably happen is that I'll finally find something that seems to meet all my criteria, and start using it...and then either a) it'll break after a few months, pissing me off to the point where I won't buy another one, or b) it'll break after a couple of years and I won't be able to find a replacement. Either way, I'll wind up searching for new keyboards again.

In this hobby I don't think there is an endgame.  By nature the keyboard enthusiast is always looking for better board.  You may find what you think is the end all to end all of keyboards, but ultimately there are times when you feel a desire to just use a different board.  Half the fun in this hobby is the anticipation, the longing, the excitement of that UPS delivery.

I find my preferences change from different kinds of keycaps to switches.  It's nice to have several to choose from at your whim.  I think for the (hobbyist, enthusiast, fanatic) you choose, half the fun is in the hunt, so there can be no endgame.

From my perspective/experience, I've come close to my "endgame."  The Poker 3 LED.  I was a Gateron fan for a while, but I found myself making stabbing motions in place of keystrokes so as to no avoid bottoming out.  I find the Cherry Browns are more natural, and the ABS caps being soft offer a very pleasurable typing experience.  I may replace the keycaps to something else that allows for backlighting.  Even though this is now my current favorite board, I wonder about Ducky, Code, Tex, etc, and can't help feeling as if I'm missing out on a "better endgame."
KPB V60 Gateron Browns and Leopold Keycaps.  Poker 3 with Gateron Browns and Poker keycaps.  Poker 3 with Cherry MX Browns, ABS keycaps and white LED's.

Leopold FC660M- my new favorite, right out of the box.

That is exactly how I feel.
As soon as that delivery van pull up out front I run out like a dog about to get a treat. I'm probably salivating as well.
And I constantly feel like trying different things. The current obsession is Gateron switches, I lub them so much. But there are times where I'm more in the mood for my Cherry clears.
I'm sure it'll only evolve from there.

The chase is often times the only reason you continue the pursuit.

I mean I'm pretty much at my end game boards right now, so I really just sit back and enjoy the community. I've made some good friends here, and enjoy talking with them on a daily basis.

And it's always awesome to see what else is coming down the pipeline, from artisans to keyboards.

Waiting to see what else is coming down the pipeline kinda implies that you haven't reached "endgame".
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
