I actually just like the idea of having the keyboard closest to the mouse and having the numpad off to the side (for right handers). I'm planning on making an aluminum Minivan type build soon and might do a little numpad/function pad to put on the left. Maybe build the one I posted here after that!

awesome man. i'm really starting to dig the accessory style keyboards. i have already started my Matrix Pad build and PCB but i may build more accessory boards in different sizes and such.

Similar layout, though no need for special shift and trimmed sum keys. Could easily program numpad for FN keys/macros/etc. and assign a toggle layer. Could omit some blue keys for LED indicators.

Where do you get your stuff made? I've only ever used acrylic and used Ponoko for that. I'm considering BigBlueSaw or Lasergist for the aluminum this time.

He does good work.   Got some plates cut for a project I was working on.   Cheaper and faster than anyone else I tried,  and of good quality and good customer service :)

I recently bought a Tipro 128 along with some POS caps to play around with. In doing so, I think I have settled on a nice portable layout.
In fact, a hand-wired, walnut keyboard may be in the works to compliment DSA Royal Navy. I really want a Nantucket Fugu to go with.

It may seem a bit cramped, but placing the numpad in the middle makes it very comfortable and its only 1u wider than a 60%.

haha nice. yeah i like dedicated keys too but i'm moving towards accessory keyboards.
i'm probably going to build myself a nice 60% and do afew daughter keyboards to satisfy my key fetish. i'm working on a 9 key right now and the matrix pad. hopefully do PCB's for both depending on afew factors. i kind of want to try an ortho but im not sure i want to build one just to test it. guess i could build one and if i dont like it sell it. *shrug*

That's what I'm planning with mine. Built a Planck but can't really get used to that Ortho layout. At least it was fun to build though!

Same here about ortho; I'll have to buy a Planck and maybe Ergodox before I decide to prototype that board haha. Designing is a lot of fun for sure

In any case I belive that with time you can get used to almost any layout.
What is horrible I think is having to use different layouts in parallel.
Like if you had a programmer dvorak at home, a qwerty at work and a colemak at your parents !
