Jailhouse Blues Vs. 67g Zealios: Does anyone have access to both?
« on: Sat, 17 December 2016, 15:05:52 »
I've read that with certain spring weights that the bump/actuation point on Zealios can be higher than the typical 2mm.  67g springs are supposed to push this point as high as possible.

Also Jailhouse Blues push this point perhaps even higher but I'm not sure.

Can anyone compare and tell me which one has the higher bump and the difference in bump feel?

Activation points are not determined by springs, but by the actuation point built into the stem.

There is no way to make it higher or lower except in the case of Cherry Blues (and clones), where you can raise the activation point (less travel), normal blues are about 2.2mm down with Jailhouse Blues cutting this in half, giving it the highest actuation point (lowest travel before activation) of any mechanical switch.

As for feel, I don't have Zeals, but I do have MX clears. Clears and Blues are supposed to have a similar in size tactile bump, however in real life, the blues bump is a bit more noticeable, but only just.

Jailhouse blues have a much more noticeable tactile bump, and if you do it right it can be a very nice switch. The problem is that the modding process is inconsistent, and it's difficult to get them to the same point. When I did the mod, many of my switches still had a very quiet audible click, whereas others had a less noticeable bump. I used regular O-rings, the kind you use for damping keycaps, so YMMV if you decide to use a smaller diameter ring.

EDIT: there's also this https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=86449.0

I also saw an interesting 3D printed product that would help make the process standardized, but I'm not sure where I saw that.

Evan's got J Spacers that just went up on his store yesterday.

Yes I ordered a set yesterday. :D   In fact I'm so sure JHB may be my end game I've been thinking of ordering another set anyway...

Those are awesome, if I were to do it again today, I would buy those immediately. So much easier.

Good luck and definitely use those spacers.

I'm not sure if this was what you are referring to, but I started experimenting with this and talked about it in a thread, but never got more than few failed test parts made.

It needs a resin printer to do it right and while I have access to one and even plan on getting/building one soon, it's not that high on my list of priorities at the moment. Especially after seeing the link above. Even if I were to manufacturer them (I have the equipment), the price wouldn't be any cheaper.
