[IC] SA Taboo - Live
« on: Mon, 10 April 2017, 12:18:57 »
Hello Geekhackers! I have today a set I've been working on since Valentine's Day: SA Taboo.
This will be a Maxkey set done in SA profile 1-1-2-3-4-3.

Group Buy Thread is Live

Combining striking red legends on a jet black base surrounding the warm grey alpha keys, SA Taboo tempts you with its bold design.
Will it peak your curiosity, appeal to your inner desires, or inspire more intriguing emotions? You are invited to this secret rendezvous as your senses of sight and touch feast on the flavors of SA Taboo!

4/11/17 - Updated Kit to use 1 novelty, added 2.25 Shift. Waiting on quote and confirmation of layout change
4/12/17 - Updated Renders added
4/13/17 - Updated layout, novelties removed currently
4/14/17 - Current layout confirmed Ok. Waiting on updated quote and GB ETA.
4/15/17 - GB is Live!

Renders:

Thanks Oblotzky for the Renders!

Base Kit:

Novelties: Cost prohibitive currently
More
Probably only have one of these due to cost

Base set (105 keys)
   ANSI 104 layout
Alpha base color: GFW, Alpha legend color: NN
Modifier base color: NN, Modifier legend color: RA
Includes an extra R1 1u “ESCAPE” - Base color: RA, Legend color: NN
Additional keys (22 keys)
   R1: 1u “DELETE”, 1u “END”, 1u “Page Down”
   R2: 1u “-”
   R3: 1u ”0”, 1u “+”, 1u “PAGE UP”, 1.5u “ALT” ×2, 1.5u “CTRL” ×2, 1.75u Stepped “CAPS LOCK”, 7u Spacebar, 1u Blanks ×3
   R4:1u “PAGE DOWN”, 1.75u “SHIFT”, 1u Blank, 2.25u "SHIFT"
Base color: NN, Legend color: RA
   R3: 6.25 Spacebar, 7u Spacebar
      Base color: GFW

Pantone references:
Warm Grey alphas - Pantone 402C
Black modifiers/text - Pantone 419C
Red modifier/text - Pantone 485C

One footnote, the R3 1u blanks will be NN/NN doubleshot of the R3 Numpad period, per Maxkey there is a possibility of seeing small outline where the character would be, so I picked the smallest surface area character, the period, to minimize it.
The R4 1u Blank will be of the R4 Page Down, as it's the only 1u R4 mold to use.

I really like look in the KLE mockup.  However I'm not sure what it is but something about the 3D renders makes it look like white keys in a dimly lit room though, which I don't find as attractive.  But looking up Pantone 402C I'd be interested; I like black/red and the grey works pretty well to break up that combo since it can be overpowering on its own.  Also like the surrounded alphas thing you're going for.

I think a second 2.25u shift would be a good additional key to toss in however (FC660 support).  I'd also prefer Super or Meta over Win if they can do that.

Great colorway.  Great theme. Great show!  :thumb:

I'll want to see some of the maxkey sets IRL before I commit, but it looks good

Nope only WIN, I asked, any keys not in other Maxkey sets, like on zfrontier or keyclack, just aren't available.
The molds for things like 1u Ctrl, Alt, etc aren't available either which is why I have 1u blanks.
I was only recently offered a chance to actually get a novelty quote, as they were something I had originally excluded.

I'm going to get back to that after this one, if/when it's more economically feasible. Different manufacturers and WAY different pricing.
And helps to have a vendor supporting you, I am not about to run a GB myself  :(.

That's disappointing, don't really care about the Win key thing but I don't see why they can't just add a second of a key they're already producing for the set.

Would get the novelties no doubt!!!

I would do anything to have brimstone on my board. Anybody else play way too much Binding of Isaac? I bet it would look nice with PuLSE.

That game would actually be a great point of reference for any other satanic symbols, and they're all in the right colorway already!

I'll be in on this. Hopefully it comes out not too much more than the $75 most of the other maxkey sets went for.

Does anyone know if maxkey has any schedule on when they were going to fix the kerning issues? I've read several times they were working on it, but is this something they plan to address immediately before they run a lot of the sets that have already gone into GB or is this a long term goal they plan to do in like a year?

Interesting. What's the source of inspiration for the name and novelties?

The design was partly inspired as an antithesis to the pink themed Valentines sets/keyboards. As my wife and I were talking about different color themes, her love of trashy vampire novels and other things leather, the black, red, and grey theme and the unconventional coloring came up and Taboo was born.
While I had a few different novelty designs in mind, ranging from the more esoteric HP Lovecraft Elder sign to Egyptian and alchemical symbols
https://i.imgur.com/g8QXtGj.png, I don't think they're going to be cost effective to be run with Maxkey.

The cost is really depending on if I want to include a novelty or not. With the overall set cost so low (compared to SP SA sets) the cost of a SINGLE novelty right now is just too much, over 10% of the entire set. It doesn't help that a profile OR width change counts as a separate novelty either.
Novelties seemed to be priced at their own moq and as much as entire Maxkey sets are cheaper than SP's, the complete opposite is true for novelty costs, by a large margin.
Maybe one day we can all pool together to do a single GB for much needed adapter and other keys like: 1u CTRL, ALT, ESC, FN, INS, R1 DEL, R2 DEL, and 1.25u SUPER, META, FN, 2u BACKSPACE, and 2.25u ENTER keys.

Also, I'm not sure when the kerning will be fixed, I'm hoping before this set, kbdist mentioned working with them about the kerning and their set is due between 4/28 - 5/12. So, we should know fairly soon how that is going.

Good news about the kerning. I definitely hear you about the novelties. It's unfortunate that they have to gouge everyone so badly.

Glad to see this is live. Pricing is good as well.

Do have to say that I'm not a fan of store credit though. If we hit a higher moq and get a cheaper price just refund us the difference. Or wait until the gb ends to charge the cc.

STORE CREDIT... some kind of Joke right?

Then shouldn't this Group Buy be pushed into the Vendor Forum Area or Artisan Services where all the other businesses reside?

Lmao and now this just went down the ****ter. I was on the fence about joining and now won't be.

Hitting different MOQs doesn't get you a refund you just get back "zfrontier rewards points" lmao. It's a good business tactic as you then either get more people buying off you later, or get people that just leave the points there and then you still keep all the money, but boy does it piss people off. This is not the way group buys should be run. I'm out

Might be a dumb question, but would these work on my CM quickfire XTi cherry switches - considering cap sizes and all? I checked the sizes at  http://www.maxkeyboard.com/mechanical-keycap-layout-and-size-chart.html
I am new to this and really would not want to spend this much money on caps and not be able to use them.

BTW the design is amazing. I was searching for a pretty set of caps and the only ones that seemed to be SA (still don't know what does that stand for  :D )

As I mentioned earlier, I'm trying to get an answer why they did that with this set.
If the $6 is really stopping you from ordering, PM me your paypal and I'll send you it personally. Otherwise I should have an answer by tomorrow, it being the weekend when this went live.

If this is your keyboard: http://www.coolermaster.com/peripheral/keyboards/quickfire-xti/ then yes they should fit, the bottom row looks to be standard 1.25x3, 6.25, 1.25x3.
You see how the spacebar goes from the middle of the X to the middle of the < key, that's a 6.25 standard size.
None of the 6.0 or 6.5 spacebar layouts in the link you mentioned would work however, since the set only has 6.25u and 7u size spacebars.  ;)
