Here's an M13 with a Lexmark logo instead of an IBM logo, with all the documentation. In addition, it has a serial/DIN Y cable instead of the more common PS/2 version.

Nice find. That Serial/AT combination is something that I thought was only used by Unicomp.

Now what really interests me is what they did with the PS/2 passthrough port on the back. Is it blanked out? Did they hack a serial port on it? I asked the seller to find out.

Unfortunately not a good thing for many folks as many newer PCs don't have a serial port.

My computers do.

I heard of those serial/AT cables and have been looking for one for a while to use with my M5-2.

M13s don't have detachable cables, MW. That means the cable you're looking for would need to have been supplied with an M5-2, so you'd be advised to look for those.

You might be able to pick this one up on a good deal then.

These workstations still have the old dual-serial port setup: http://cgi.ebay.com/LOT-OF-5-IBM-IntelliStation-M-Pro-CORE-2-DUO-2-66GHZ-PC_W0QQitemZ290408862724QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item439db79404
And they were made fairly recently.

But yeah, standard "I bought it at bestbuy" computers don't have serial.

Some might, just pins on the mobo though with no header. Best not to expect it though.

I think the USB based serial port controllers have compatibility issues with older software...I could describe why in laymens terms but not in a very technical sense:

Rather than referencing "COM1" the software may be attempting to access it by interrupt or IO port.

Maybe that's not so untechy.
