Not long ago, 3XRGB light kit was designed by some keyboard enthusiasts to spice up the customized keyboard game, especially for the novelty keycaps compatible with backlighting. The designers use spectacular skills to attach 2*1206 SMD LED to the surface of the switch combined with the one regular switch LED to create the magical 3XLED backlight. This is, however, quite cumbersome, and not quite as accessible to most users.

Based on the community's instructions and feedback, we have created 4XRGB light kit. The 4XRGB is installed between the PCB and the plate, the 4 SMD LEDs emit the lights, which shines through any transparent switches (e.g., Tealios), and the effects on box switches (with creamy bottom) are also great.

Here are some pictures and videos of the actual products, and how they look on novelty keycaps. This 4XRGB will no doubt take your keyboard game to the next level.

Most of the PCBs are compatible. Details of installation instructions will be provided to users. A minimal level of soldering skills are needed.

Original Designer and Manufacturer: Scott Wei

Update: Scott designed and made some but the demand is not high. Now Demo S has made an improved version if more people will be interested. This will likely be available along with the Think6.5V2 GB.

See images and videos below, and let us know what you think and whether you will be interested in this offered to the broad community at a reasonable cost!

Definitely interested. I also wouldn't mind a variant design that only has 2 LEDs in the top left, leaving the bottom and right empty to be lit by the next switch. Then throw a 4 LED board in lower right switch, and you've got even lighting with half the power draw.

So far not many have signed up. If we can't get 50 to sign up I guess we will just leave it. It sold hundreds instantly in a recent Chinese GB!

I love these, they literally sold out hundreds in the China GB, but only 10 signed up on GH, I am baffled - maybe I didn't describe clearly what this does?

How is the color controlled on these?  Would it be controllable by firmware or is it fixed?

so we have a vendor in the US that started selling these, so are they now generally available?

edited to add vendor: https://spacecat.design/

but they are not cheap $7 for one.

Would be super interested in seeing what the build process is like (and getting a comparison of power draw) for installing a significant number of these into a board; e.g what it's like to modify an entire 60% and what QMK/VIA support is like for this kind of thing.

what i've been told, these are treated like 1 LED on a WS6812B strip.  so it would be controllable like those.

i dont think you could build a full board with these, besides the cost, there is a limit to the number of RGB LEDs that you can drive from the USB bus.  i think it's in the 25-30 range.  but thats assuming these draw as much as a RGB LED, thats still TBD.

There are some discussions in the ALF discord, Scott the designer is in there.

And I integrated 4XRGB to the PCB for Think6.5, to save the trouble (or joy) in the modding.

This may revive with Demo S working on an improved design to make it easy to solder.

Oldcat, is this still going to happen? I really hope so and I would like to buy a couple for my SpaceCV and Think6.5 V2. I'm sure you can gain some traction on the Think discord channel with these.

Currently in discussion with Demo S to see if he would like to have it available for purchase during the Think65v2 GB. This will definitely save shipping!
And we have actually optimized both CyberVoyager and Think65V2 PCB to allow easy soldering of the 4XRGB LEDs on the ESC key. Will try to make it happen.

I made a quick tutorial on installing a 4XRGB kit on Think6.5V2. Suffice to say that 4XRGB kit an be installed in many PCBs using various methods, but we have made a conscious effort to make it super easy for you to install it. This is also my absolutely favorite mod to any keyboard build.

First step:
Take a 4XRGB kit (with some wires, which will be provided with the kit in the upcoming GB), and fix it to a flat surface. What I did was to stick it on a plastic surface with a double sided adhesive.
Apply some solder on the pads (the pads will be optimized in the new version DemoS developed, what I am showcasing here is an old version of 4XRGB kit), and solder the 3 wires to the pads.
Note that the 3 pads are G, I, and V.

Second, stick the kit to the PCB. I use double sided adhesive, applied to the bottom of the kit, which sticks to the PCB. Note that I use a switch to guide it, so that later the switch can fit in the switch slot but not collide with the kit.

Third, insert the wires through the hole on the PCB to the back of the PCB.

Fourth, clip the wires to the right length, and solder them to the G.O.V holes, note that you match G wire to G, I wire to O, and V wire to V. I use different colors of wires, but if you might use single color if you can tell them apart as you solder the respective wires to the correct holes.

Fifth, this all is done correctly, when you connect the USB cable, the 4 RGB LEDs on the kit should light up.

This is how it looks like when you put a switch on. Use some transparent or translucent switches for maximum RGB effects.

Lastly, tune your VIA light effects settings to achieve the result you like for the 4XRGB ESC Mod, here is mine.

Interesting, I believe you can solder them on WASD as well. Just need 4 kits :)

Would they overlap at all or would they be able to fit together?
