Realforce R2 55G Harvesting Questions
« on: Tue, 30 October 2018, 21:49:45 »
Hi,

Am a newbie to geekhack and keyboard game. I currently have 2 HHKB Type S that I use for work and home. Tried the RF R2 55g silenced recently and it got me tripping.

Seeking some opinions and advice on how best to go about harvesting RF 55g domes/sliders.

- Should I buy the 104 keys instead of the 87 keys so that I may swap out majority of the keys of both HHKBs?

- One of my type S spacebar is pretty clacky, will the dome swap help it?

- Will be in Tokyo next month, will RFs be cheaper there?

- Besides Yodobashi Camera and Tsukumo, where can I find RFs and HHKB bluetooth? Was thinking to make use of the tax refund as well.

Thanks for the information and advice.

1. if you're harvesting, may as well, though obviously you'll still be short. however, it shouldn't be too hard to grab the leftovers from someone who transplanted from an 87u to an hhkb
2. no unfortunately, that's just the way they are. i have found that the BT is far better in this regard. if you haven't already lubed it, you might give that a try, though ultimately it won't eliminate the sound
3. absolutely
4. last i checked HHKB BT was not actually sold in stores, though that might have changed. PFU direct or amazon have them for retail (29,700 jpy). as for instore options, try sofmap and ark! in akiba

Lubed purple silent RF sliders and 55g RF domes are the ONLY way to type on an hhkb IMO.

Wow, thanks for the info! Will buy the RF in Tokyo then.

Knew the BT ones had some chassis reinforcement, didn't know they improve the spacebar area as well. Makes me wanna get it even more.

As for the spacebar clack, will changing to PBT help dampen the noise? Its pretty unsettling as it doesn't go well with the whole typing rhythm. Just wish there is a off-white one that would suit the default white blank keycaps. I dig the HHKB white blanks look
What lube would you all recommend and where should I get it? I should also get the syringe looking thing as well I assume.

actually I think the only 55g r2 is an ansi model released in korea, so you would actually have to go with a 55g 87u. you can always save some money by getting one off yahoo auctions, they're going for about $110-120, or you can get a brand new one for like $180 from sofmap. unfortunate that fullsize 55g is so hard to find outside of the new models.

I don't know what the PBT Spacebar is doing exactly to stop the clanking around of the spacebar...but it makes a big difference everytime I've used it.

The PBT Spacebar is a bit warped...and the connections to the stabilizer are really tight...so there is probably a reasonable amount of tension there that wasn't there with the ABS spacebar...and that must be doing something to keep it from making extra movements that ended up creating the extra sound.

Glad to hear there’s a chance PBT space bar might be able to solve the problem....

Just ordered a few from KBD fans.... Hope colors won’t be too off

Just worried after I swap them out and no longer like RF in uniform 45g, it’ll be hard to sell.....

I mainly use Macs, apparently RF and Macs don’t exactly mix well e.g wake from sleep....

if you're just looking for the dome, maybe good to try BKE Light redux. Chyros has a review of all 4 weight variants and recommends Light for those that love 55g stock. I also enjoy 55g stock dome and looking forward to trying BKE Light myself.

I find BKE feel vastly different than stock topre.  I tried it for a bit then went back to stock topre domes lol.

I followed Nathan Kim's advice and used Trybosis 3204 to lube the rails of the sliders and Krytox 205 Grade 0 for the stabs. The 205 came with some handy application sticks that I used, but I also had cheap 00 paint brushes from Amazon as well. You can listen to a typing test of a silenced HHKB P2 by NK on YT.

I got the 3204 from Techkeys and the 205-0 from Switchmod.net.

I did the mod last weekend (also adding KBD fans silencing rings and Isolate It Sorbathane) and now my 55g HHKB sounds like raindrops when I type on it. The 205 really helps with the spacebar sound.

FYI: the silencing mod takes hours (I took my time on the x-rings--wanted to make sure they were all perfectly flush to avoid any problems--so the whole mod took me 3-4 hours). But some people just prefer lubed HHKB Pro2 and skip the rings.

Good luck!

Thanks for the information... waiting for my PBT spacebar from KBDFANS to arrive to see if there’s any improvement before I lube it.

TBH, I’m pretty happy how the stock type S sounds except for the rattling spacebar....

3204 looks to be highly recommended....
