[IC] GMK Nautilus 2 | GB LIVE!
« on: Fri, 31 January 2020, 15:52:35 »

GMK NAUTILUS 2

Project site

Coming in April 2020 - Group Buy Thread

“The sea is everything. It covers seven-tenths of the terrestrial globe. Its breath is pure and life-giving.
It is an immense desert place where man is never lonely, for he senses the weaving of Creation on every hand.
It is the physical embodiment of a supernatural existence… For the sea is itself nothing but love and emotion.”

Captain Nemo

Someone suggested the other day that this keyset should be run again. So I figured why not, maybe there’s enough interest to warrant a second round.

Nautilus 2, as I call it, will have a very different kit structure than the initial run.
Below you will find the current version of them, some of them are not final and are thus still open for discussion and improvement.

Oblivion V2 jokes aside, what I want to know with this IC is:

  • Nordic + German + UK, German + UK or just the ISO UK kit (this will depend on how well people respond to this IC and how much interest there is)
  • RAMA Caps: sub Enter key?
  • Explorer kit & Space bars: GMK recently added 3.00C space bars to their catalogue, would you guys want 3.00C?

Vendors

Kits

The Core Kit is your starting point and provides basic layout coverage for 60%, 65%, 75%, TKL, 96-key,
1800 and fullsize layouts in both standard and winkeyless variants while keeping mind affordability.

Some notable inclusions are the accent Enter, Esc and Arrow keys, split backspace and stepped caps lock keys.

The Explorer add-on kit extends the Core’s layout coverage and provides support for 660-like keyboards
(2.25U Shift), standalone numpads (double zero and equals key), Alice-like and split keyboards (split space
bars and a second B), 88-key tenkeyless boards (F13) and 60% keyboards with arrows (2.00U and 1.00U shifts).

Additionally, the kit also includes alternative layout modifiers for HHKB, tenkeyless and other standard layouts.

A standard Tab and Backspace key have been included so in conjunction with the Core kit you could re-use
the modifiers.

The Forties extension kit allows you to cover small form factor keyboards such as the OLKB Planck,
ION × AI03 Equinox or Prime Keyboards Prime_E.

The kit includes accents accent Enter and Esc, small space keys, and some alternative layout support
 for ortholinear keyboards.

The International kit provides full layout coverage for Danish, Finnish, German, Swedish and UK ISO keyboards.

The Mac Kit adds alternative layout support for MacOS keyboards with Command and Option keys.

Featuring the Nautilus submarine and a set of R4 Jules, Verne and Rose of the Winds modifier keys, the Novelties
add that extra 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea touch.

The Space bars kit includes accent space keys from 1.00C to 7.00C for both standard, split, and 40% keyboards.

RAMA × NAUTILUS

Made in collaboration with RAMA WORKS®, we'll be releasing a limited-edition keycap designed to match the
Nautilus 2 keycap set.

The keycap, which is made from anodized aluminium, depicts the Nautilus II ship from the League of Extraordinary
Gentlemen
created by Alan Moore and illustrated by Kevin O-Neill.

YES FINALLY. This is the set that got me into all of this, but I didn’t see it until after it ran the first time. I’m in for the base kit, Mac kit, and Rama cap.

A Rama enter key version of the yellow nautilus enter key would be cool. My only concern is that because it’s engraved and filled in, the large pattern might be an annoying amount of texture if that makes sense. I’ve never used a Rama enter key though, just escape keys, so I don’t know if it’s disruptive when typing. Idk I’ll literally buy whatever. Enter key. Escape key. All of the Nautilus.

My all time favourite set, hands down. Damn, it took me soo long to get a set on r/mm... And before I even mamage to build a fitting board for it, here comes R2.

Anyway, I can finally get that 40s kit for my ortho! Thanks for including full compatibility with Preonic, too often I miss R1 Backspace and R2 Tab.

Also, I assume this will be colour-matcheed with original Nautilus so we can mix & match?

That sounds fantastic. Take my money. I have a blue Rama U80-A coming my way whenever they ship, and I can't wait to make this the crown jewel of that build. This really is the set that started it all for me, so thank you for running it again.

Any particular color PVD for the brass? Raw brass color? Gold? Kind of selfish I would love for it to match the gold brass weight on the Rama U80-A

I would want to either make a R1 1.00U or the enter but I'm not sure I'd want to make both.

Nautilus 2 will be using the same colors as the previous round and I have instructed GMK to use the same colors that we had during the first round. The goal is indeed being able to mix and match, but keep in mind that the color matching process is not that easy and there could be slightly differences between the first and second round.

Happy to see round 2 as I got into the hobby after R1 was said and done. If the Forties kit is open for discussion, would you consider adding a 1.75u R2 backspace? It looks like it was included in the base kit of the original round.

I'm always curious why both aren't done more often. Im not sure how often Rama caps don't hit MOQ. Is it a design aesthetic reason? 2 or 3 Rama metallic artisan accents, especially gold in color, sound like fire to me.

PVD Gold finish (like the U80) would be ideal, yes.

This just made my day. Like others, I'd probably also buy both a Rama enter key and a Rama escape key. Maybe the escape could bring back the sextant or diving helmet from round 1 with navy infill also on gold brass? I do also get wanting the enter to stay special / not wanting to cannibalize sales of the enter key though. Excited either way!

Dark blue tilde and pipe keys in an add-on kit?

Also, what's the point of adding another 1.5 R2 tab and 2.0 R1 backspace key into the Explorer kit?

TBH, these kits don't seem very well thought out to me.

Unless I’m missing some obscure Mac needs, there is no need for an R3 Command key. Command is where the Windows key goes, next to the Spacebar. Control would replace Caps Lock, not Command.

I'm really glad to see that you're even open to this. I totally get that as a GB runner, hitting MOQ is a priority and that no one wants to be left holding a bunch of keycaps for alternative layouts they don't use.

FWIW, I'll throw my chit into the "please offer Colevrak+" bucket. Thank you for at least considering it instead of dismissing it outright.

If I were to make it, the Typist kit would provide layout coverage for Colemak, Colemak DH, Colemak DHM, Dvorak, Workman, Norman, and Carpalx QGMLWY.

If you add the Typist kit, please consider adding these three keycaps:
   • R3 ]} to support Wide mod shown below, which works on all but one supported layout plus QWERTY (not Dvorak).
   • R4 ' " for bare-bones support of Programmer's Dvorak.
   • R3 non-homing U for non-homing Dvorak.  (Non-homing keycaps are already there for all other supported layouts.)

If you aren't using Dvorak, sell the R3 ]} and the R2 ' " to a QWERTY user wanting to run wide mod.

For anyone curious, there are more alternative-layout details here: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=101187.msg2786467#msg2786467
