Keyboards / Vintage keyboard- not working
« Last post by jcoffin1981 on Fri, 04 July 2025, 14:56:06 »
An associate of mine knows that I am a keyboard aficionado and gifted me a Dell AT101W that he had lying around.  It worked when last used a long time ago.  It requires a PS2 connection so I purchased an adapter, but even with the adapter Windows does not recognize that a device is plugged in.  I don't know if the board is dead, if it's a driver issue, or maybe an issue with the adapter.  It's possible Windows is very fickle about the adapter used or it is defective.

I'd like to use the board for a bit but am not really crazy about the switches used.  I will probably end up selling it for parts or as pre-owned if I can get it to work.  I'd like to have someone else enjoy it instead of it becoming E-waste.

Unfortunately, I get a message "Forbidden" when I try to post an image.

a split design that caters to those who prefer more feminine designs for their boards.

"a split design that cat-ers to those who..." great pun right there :D GLWIC! love how unique this is. I could definitely see this as a great gift :P

what i did is change the email on my old account and then claim the username i wanted on this new account. However with that you also lose your post history but I didn't really care for the 20 or so posts on my old account, so that's why this is my first post here :P

If you have an access to a 3D printer then you can design and print an holder for your controller. That will take care of holding it securely which is one of the reasons you want to design your "breakout board". The other feature of your "breakout board" is to provide comfortable access to the pins. But you do not need this feature since your controller already provides it (contrary to a raw MCU SMD package).

You can securely hold you controller in corners. Design slots into which the corners of the controller PCB fit tightly. Secure the corners (which are not constrained from at least four directions) with a screw. If you do this on all 4 corners then it will hold very well. It is often enough to constrain two opposing corners from 4 directions and the other two from only one direction.

See this post as an example how I fixed Arduino Micro (which has a similar PCB) to a plastic case: https://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?p=181898#p181898 Two opposite corners (with screws) are constrained from 4 directions. The other two corners are constrained from only 3 directions. Holds well enough. It can be dismounted if needed.

I'm actually more optimistic than the Intel doomers, as the IPC isn't that bad, if their x3d thing works at all, I think 30-40% from 285k is easily cover-able.
Rumors are starting to circulate that new Intel is also degrading.
Doesn't matter how good if it doesn't last 2 years.

I'm getting very hyped for Nova Lake.
52 Cores baybee!
https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/intel-nova-lake-specs-leaked-up-to-52-cores-and-150w-of-tdp-for-intels-amd-zen-6-rival

what do ou need 52 cores for?
Yep
Only under very limited circumstances can you actually take advantage of so many cores, most stuff you will do on a desktop simply can't multi-process that well (and never will without major technological leap) meaning the only other use is multiple process and your system only has so many of those running at once, most of which are very small and sit idle 99% of the time. Much more than a dozen and you start having idle cores and/or cycling loads around between them.
