Geekhack Moderator Application!
« on: Fri, 02 May 2014, 21:19:18 »
2021/11/17: We are still/again looking for new moderators!  Read on if you're interested in becoming a geekhack moderator.

Geekhackers!!
The moderation team is in need of a few more members in order to operate most effectively, so we are asking for your help.  We are calling for volunteers to apply for a moderator position, at which time the current team will review the candidate (you) and make a decision.

Who should apply?
We will be looking for a certain type of candidate for these positions.  Traits of the ideal candidate include:
  • Excellent people skills and an effective communicator
  • Level-headed and "calm", patient
  • Able to take negative feedback (thick-skinned)
  • Cares about the forum and experience of every user
  • An active presence on the forum (ideally at least once or twice daily)
If this sounds like you, then read on!

What are the responsibilities?
  • Daily reports and moderator duties
  • Weighing in on global issues
  • Anything else that might come up!

What positions are available?
We are currently taking applications for "provisional" moderators, or moderators-in-training, so to speak.  After some length of time on the team, you may move up to a role with more responsibility.

How do I apply?
To apply, simply send a PM to myself and the Moderator Team user with the following information:
  • Your history on the forum (tell us a bit about yourself and why you want the position) - please be brief.
  • Why you think you would be an ideal candidate for the position.
  • Tell us about yourself! Geekhack's staff is composed of engineers, scientists, executives, artists, and other geeks from all walks of life! Tell us about who you are, what you are and what you want to bring to the table.
  • Do you foresee any major conflicts that would hinder your ability to operate as a Moderator in the near future?

We hope to hear from at least a few of you.  :)
Thank you!

I dunno, I think you tend to be thick skinned too, maybe even caring about the experience of every user...that is if making sure they have their daily dose of spam counts.

Just out of curiosity, what are the daily reports?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

"Tending to reports and other such things on a daily basis" would perhaps be a better way to phrase that.   ;)

I've been an effective moderator before, albeit not in a forum environment. I'd apply, but I think it would be laughable for someone with my post count (and newness to the forum in general) to end up a mod :P

Honestly, I think you guys should just appoint someone if you need another moderator.  Just as with law enforcement candidates, the people most likely to volunteer are the ones least suited to the task.

I disagree on principle. Personally, I semi-volunteered myself on the express basis that I've been appointed moderator (and later admin) in other locations, and have been told I've done a decent job. I'm not actually sending in an application though due to my atrociously low postcount, and the fact that I'm currently trying to make a small amount of money by offering modding services to other users. I'd have to give up the opportunity for income there to be a moderator (by vendor TOS), and with my school expenses every bit of money counts right now. Were circumstances different, and had I been a part of this community for longer, I would be sending in an application as I and others feel that I am suited to this type of task.

It'd be nice to have a page that lists the forum staff/moderators and also something describing what the different moderator titles mean, just for informational purposes.

And you could have short bio's of them to.

That is a good idea - like add a Contact link to the menu bar across the top of the GH pages (between Wiki and Donate?).

If Ray became a moderator, he'd have to change his user title. This cannot be allowed to happen :P

That was definitely on my list submitted as a CON.

Hello,

I would like to give it a go. I would be glad to assist the forums.

I do believe i meet the requirements and even if i am midly active as a user on the forum, i would use moderator rights decently if required and report when needed.

As an example of my involvment into the forum, please consult the Keycap Site List that i started and kept working on this year with the help of CptBadass (Many Thanks again if you're reading this homie) (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=45672.0)

If you believe i am the right-fitted person to do the job aswell, please contact me via private message. Thanks.

He's saying you are going out of your way to be extra nice to the admin so they will make you a  moderator.

And on topic of your comment, is English being your primary language part of the qualifications?

Nope.  That's why photekq, CPTBadAss, jdcarpe, and BlueBar (I might be forgetting someone) aren't mods.  jdcarpe was formerly a mod, but stepped down to serve solely as a keeper.

so, i think it's pretty much inarguable that everything in life has a direct analogue in monty python's holy grail. the keepers are the monks that walk around chanting and smacking their heads with boards. the moderators are the "bring out your dead!" guy. the administrators are the black knight.

Bwahahahahaha :))
In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

well i only saw the banner and told him it was nice lol didn't realise he was an admin.

I don't get the part about english not being my primary. It's my second language (Je parle Français) and i'm trying my best to write it good. I don't know if i can be a mod while not being english primary but whatever, i don't really want the post, i just said i was available if you really need personnel to help.

I don't really care about having moderating rights on an internet forum lol, i just wanna help it the way it requires me to do it.

I was kidding, I have a dry sense of humour sometimes. :)

Honestly, it doesn't matter to me who moderates what as long as what little power a moderator can have on any forum isn't abused, it happens on a lot of the forums I use besides GH, and it's just a downer, as it usually causes the forum to slowly die.

Yeah

Back in the days i was on some other dofus forums and a mod was just a pretentious guy who was always arguing about random stuff no one cared about and just to "be right" he would go edit some other peoples posts just to back the stupid stuff he was saying.

Human nature is fundamentally wrong.

If you haven't filled in an application yet, it's very simple. It consists of two questions: Do you know what a delete button is? Can you perform the delete function without regard?

Then you must provide evidence of your deleting abilities.

Merci.

we have sent out the first small round of responses. NOTE: if you have not received a response yet, don't worry! we're just titrating the number of people we look more carefully at in each run to make scheduling easier. thanks for your patience everyone!

Yes. If you haven't gotten a reply yet, we either haven't made a decision or we just filled up the first batch of interviewees (which is small for manageability) before we made a decision.

Maybe just ask people who seem to fit the bill? Someone posted a little while back that the people who seem to want the position the most are usually the least qualified for the position. The right kind of person probably needs to be roped in, hogtied, and politely asked (while kneeling between their shoulder blades) to answer the call!

In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

no one wants to give people a chance around here :'(

Bill your going down a slippery road if you aren't careful you will soon find yourself somehow incapacitated, you're group buy and potential group buys will cause the geekhack group buy leader curse to befall you, don't push your luck trying to be a moderator too, or you will be guaranteed to disappear, as so many before you have.

Don't worry I don't actually want to be a moderator.

Also, I don't think anyone that runs group buys or makes money off geekhackers (with the exception of people that run gbs at cost) should be a moderator.

Almost everyone who runs group buys makes money here. Some people actually make a substantial amount. Only exception I've seen is bunny's gbs which look to be at cost. There may be more that I'm not aware of.

Some people actually lose money off of GBs.  I got lucky and didn't lose any off the one I ran, but I also didn't make money.

I can say I have not, in fact, I haven't seen the inside of a 23u.  I wonder if it's any different than the tkls, though.  Keyboard science, we need you.

I can say I have not, in fact, I haven't seen the inside of a 23u.  I wonder if it's any different than the tkls, though.  Keyboard science, we need you.

https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=67723.msg1594873#msg1594873

I posted some pics there

Looks like a normal RF cable to me, then, so I guess I have made cables for the 23u.

Sent you an email.

Almost everyone who runs group buys makes money here. Some people actually make a substantial amount. Only exception I've seen is bunny's gbs which look to be at cost. There may be more that I'm not aware of.

I lost some money on my T-shirt GB.
Same on my hoodie buy, but it was under $20 so I considered it pretty good.

The community was nice enough to chip in to cover most of my costs but a lot of incidentals (tape, packing materials, etc) added up. Not that I'm complaining. I love seeing people in the shirts and I'm so thankful people donated money to help cover my costs. That made it worth it :)

Sorry about the off topic. Please continue with the regularly scheduled programming.

If nothing's changed, no.

I've been mostly AFK for 6 months, though, don't take my word for it

Depends.

You get e-mailed for every report. Make of that what you will.

It's not a small thing, but it's not a huge time-eater.

Is there some other way I can directly give back to the community through time/effort without too much monetary commitment? I'd love to be a mod, but I feel like you folks wouldn't be interested in someone who's account isn't even old enough to post in the classifieds.

I don't recall there being any issues with brocaps, but I think he was joking anyway.

PS: If you're referencing Ivan, anyone could do it, and I don't think the two elements combine.

Apparently mods/admins don't always show up in the online user display.

Like now, for instance.

If you're seriously interested, don't let a relatively low postcount stop you from applying. I direct you to:

I've been an effective moderator before, albeit not in a forum environment. I'd apply, but I think it would be laughable for someone with my post count (and newness to the forum in general) to end up a mod :P

which seems to have worked out okay

Frankly, I would be perfect for a moderator position. I share a common trait with the rest of the mods: I'm never here.

Ok, ****, stop bothering me; I'll do it, I guess.
I generally hate all keycaps. Keycaps are for poofs. Real men touchtype on stems. Non-functional artisans are awesome, I use them for the ESC key ... escape is for cowards anyways, real men go frontal assault.

Are there any 'minimum requirements' for applying for a mod position? Min. post count etc?

If you're interested, just send in an app. There are things that we look for, but it's more about getting a sense of the person and whether they'd be a good fit for the role, rather than hitting some arbitrary metrics.

We are currently looking to add a few new moderators to the ranks; please read the OP and send in an application if you're interested!  :)  If you've applied before, don't be afraid to re-apply - we have "denied" applicants in the past due to a lack of history on the site, which will have likely changed in the time since initial application.

Note: I added a note to please send the application to both myself and the Moderation Team account, for quicker visibility.  :thumb:

This is being updated by the mods, you could probably guess who is active.

Edit: Just noticed a couple are missing, guess that's why they're looking for more :o

Yeah, that list is currently up to date.  Lost a few over the course of the past year or so, so we're looking to flesh the ranks out a bit more.  :thumb:

Will you update the forum software to improve compatibility with Microsoft Internet Explorer 6?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Hey Hoffman! I sent a DM
