GMK Vamp



GMK Vamp is inspired by a character from visual novel from 2001 and 2021,
and various fighting game spinoffs
and a certain unrelated franchise's 7th anniversary celebration

This set will hopefully run sometime in October 2022, but nothing is final.
Prices, vendors, collabs, and kitting are still pretty up in the air, I thought to get some feelers for how it might perform a bit early, if at all.

Kitting

Base

The 135-key base kit offers compatibility for standard form factor keyboards, from full-size down to 60%, with bottom row and column options.

Extension

The 20-key extension kit expands compatibility to more boards, including F13 based boards, 40s, Alice, HHKB, 1800, 660, and more.
It has been kept pretty small so it won't be super expensive or anything.

Novelties

The 14-key novelty kit contains some very normal and very generic shapes such as:
Generic cube, generic earth symbol, generic flower, and generic moon.
Also, a very generic 3 letter word.
This is just a normal cat face. Very normal.
Generic now looks like an extremely strange word to you.

Designed by the GOAT OCM.

Colors
All 3 colors are custom colors from the RAL Design, RAL Effect, and RAL Classic series.


The WS2 is for reference

The red used will not need to be colormatched.

The blue and white are both custom and will need to be matched. I opted for a slightly darker white - as WS2 is just far too blinding for me.
I have purchased A6-sized paper sheets of both colors, and closely related RAL plastic plates during the design of the set.
These will easily help with any plastics matching as well as having given me a better idea of what I can expect from GMK.
Colors will not be disclosed at this time, as to at least give even a tiny attempt at deterring any would-be cloners.

Vendors

NA - Switchmod Keyboards

This is only an idea for me yet, I don't know if it'll be viable enough to hit an MOQ of 250 or 500, so I want to take my time with the design before asking any vendors.
Expect vendors that I have worked with in the past.
However, I have reached out to a few artisan keycap makers, and have commissioned some art for the deskmat in advance.

Pricing

Not concrete this time - Viability before quotes.
Goal of $115-125 base, $25-30 ext, $25-30 novelties.

I really like the colors here.

A couple kitting suggestions for extensions:
* Since 40s is not in base anyways, inclusion of R2 esc key and R3 1.75u enter would be nice but not super necessary
* I'd suggest 2x 3u over the 6u off-centered bar
* If you don't do 2x 3u you could probably remove the 1u unless you really want it for Alice
* Since you're putting HHKB 2x 1.5u Supers in Extensions you may as well add a second 1u alt key

I'd like to support broad 1800 and tsangan compatibility so I would say 6u OC stays over 2x 3us.

I'll think about the 1.75u enter, but R2 esc probably not, I'll have a running tally of keys that are up for consideration to be added or moved and towards the end make decisions, lest I end up with a slow creep of added keys and suddenly the extension kit is in the $40 range, which I don't want.

I do want the 1u bar for alice. It's neat and feels nice.

As for the alt, yeah that was an oversight; if I added the 1.5u supers for support of hhkb it would be odd to not have that second alt - I'll add it to the ext kit.

Oh, and if the point of the offset 6u is to support old-school 1800s, you probably want a second 1u Ctrl in the extension kit.

Right, but for cost optimization, eliminating extra colors from child kits does seem to make a difference in terms of efficiency.

I'm not sure about XT - I've never seen much actual vocal support for it, maybe 1-2 people per set, and another 1-2 people on discord. It doesn't seem to make up that much of a crowd and I'm worried that adding it would just saddle folks with costs for a minority of a minority.

Hey all! Some news:

I am going through with this set! Thanks everyone for your interest.
To the extension kit I have added:
1x 1u alt
1x 1.75u r3 enter.
Colors will remain as is, and the rest of the kitting, while it has time to change, will also remain as is. If you still have ongoing suggestions please let me know, it is very far from too late.

I have submitted a Request for Quote to GMK.



This is a new render of the extension kit; I will also update the main post with this.
