Please note not all the renders are fully accurate due to legend changes, most notably the icon mods.
Please refer to the kit renders to view the final revision.

Inspiration

The Great Wave off Kanagawa <神奈川沖浪裏>(c 1829-1833) by Katsushika Hokusai
is a woodblock print (Ukiyo-e) and is one of the most reproduced and recognisable images of Japanese artwork in history. World-renowned, it has had a profound influence on Western art culture, but particularly upon the French Impressionists which in-turn shaped the great wave of European Modernism in the 20th Century. Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night also clearly shows significant inspiration from it, with him even writing vividly to his brother Theo:
Hokusai’s "waves are claws, the boat is caught in them, you can feel it".
More
In fact, Hokusai's sophisticated uses of rich hues of blue to create this striking design, led to European artists to incorrectly deem the colour blue as idiosyncratically Japanese, and fuelled the "Japonism" craze at the time (the earliest weebs Japanophiles!). The blue in fact was actually European in origin, commonly known as Prussian Blue, and is the first modern synthetic pigment, spreading rapidly around the world, causing reciprocating ripples of creativity globally, from Paris to Japan.

There's many details to love, such as the intense dramatic tension of the gigantic wave about to break on top of the viewer unfolding in the foreground, to the contrast between the saturated swells and the white crest of foam with its claw-like tendrils. Despite its restrictive palette, it successfully captures a moment in time, portraying the constantly changing movement of the ocean and its vast power. Men in boats appear insignificant amongst the chaos of nature, which even envelops Japan's largest and sacred symbol, Mount Fuji (a focus of Hokusai's spirituality). This referential icon appears as a diminutive triangle in the distance, where it could be easily missed and mistaken for another ocean wave. This defied traditional Japanese compositions of perspective at the time, and Hokusai thus skillfully blends European structure, with Japanese motifs and techniques into a seamless work of enduring international appeal.

To us, the significant history behind this artwork and the pigment Prussian blue (berorin-ai; ベロリン藍) highlights the role of cultural exchange at the heart of creative discovery, and to continue to celebrate this spirit, we're using this iconic seascape as the theme for a keycap set design we think lots of people will also love too.

Once again
Gaze upon the glory of this venn diagram for a major reason why you should get this set:

Yes we've finally got this set to GB!
We're stoked to have this set reach this stage.
This was the first keycap set Dudeship and I started designing in mid-2020, and we didn't anticipate it would take this long, but nor did we expect to reach the level it has become.
Humble beginnings: https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/iawoah/the_great_wave_off_kanagawa_%E7%A5%9E%E5%A5%88%E5%B7%9D%E6%B2%96%E6%B5%AA%E8%A3%8F_concept_keycap/
Kitting, novelties, deskmats and renders all took many long nights and many things were learnt (so much kitting...)

Thanks again to all who have helped given us encouragement, feedback and advice that has shaped the set to where it is today.
Particular shout outs go to Kidviddy (JP translations), Oli (vectors), NoPunin10ded (language kitting), Dr Higsby/Mat (40s kit), Swishy (beginning advice) & Chase (conception).

Really like the colours on this set! Just wanted to check if it has been noted that the homing "F" key on all alpha kit renders (excluding latin and alt language kits) have the wrong legends, where there is an "F" instead of the corresponding hiragana/katakana. Other than that, it looks good!

Hey there,
Thanks for the heads-up. We were using an older render image with incorrect legends on the homing key. It should look like this:

i'm hesitant to post this, so maybe that's a sign i should not. on the other hand, consider this a psa for newbs. or consider this a request for vendors to push for more info from keyreative before asking for our money.

full disclosure: it's getting tougher for me to pull the trigger on new sets, no matter how much i like and no matter the manu. i'm in on KAT Refined. the GB closed 31 oct 2020, and production now scheduled for dec 2021 according to mekibo's 18 june update. shipping to vendors and shipping to customers puts this well into 1Q2022  :-[

KAT Cat's Eye closed 4 dec 2020 and is production is now also scheduled for dec 2021 according to kono's 17 june update.

note: keyreative's new machines were supposed to be online in january but there are no public updates that i could find about success of aging and stability tests. there also have been reports of misalignment and other production issues. keyreative has been generally uncommunicative about its issues and delays, as stated by macsurfy in KAT Refined thread at the end of may.

Been looking forward to this. But just realised there is no 1.25u left shift in the ukiyo-e novelties  :( or rather, there's only one 1.25u dark blue on the left side of the novelties.

However, in the ukiyo-e novelties, I was wondering if that 1.5u light blue on the right side, on the last (bottom) R1, with the fish/koi and wave - is that supposed to be a white keycap instead of light blue?

Yes they are missing the Mac (Ringo) modifiers. Thanks for letting us know. We'll notify them.

Hi, yes, the R1 1.5u modifier on the right side is actually meant to be white keycap. That's a color error made during rendering. We'll get that corrected asap. Thanks to you and the others who have pointed this out.

It will be dye-sub due to complex novelties and many molds needed if we do doubleshot.

I didn't put my order in since the Asero artisan is still not listed in CandyKeys.
Aren't they suppose to have it for order also? I've been trying to speak with them, but was not able to find an answer yet.

Hi there, they've been informed of this matter. I'm still waiting for them to update their site.

Yes, reaching MOQ in week 1 would be considered a successful GB imo. Anything above that is just awesome. Not going to evaluate our set by its success compared to the Olivia, Modern Dolch and Mizu level of popularity. We just hope people like it.

Hi there, I would recommend zFrontier as they are the closest to you, as they are based in China. The next closest vendor is probably Hex keyboards.

Really cool set, I bought the Ortho icons and Colemak sets for my Planck keyboard.

Positive:
- it's gorgeous
- love not having to buy a base kit to get all keys Colemak + you covered a lot of variations (I use Colemak Mod DH)

Requests / Possible improvements:
- No 1U R2 baspace key for the colemak set! It's a pity for the Planck or other ortho guys. I was really looking forward to replace my tab key with a 1U backspace key (dark blue one). If it's possible to add it in the Colemak/Dvorak set... that'd be great :p
Online, I find that many colemak users are also using ortho keyboards, so it seems like a legit request for the community :)

- mac modifiers lack some of the light blue colors, so I didn't buy the set because it wouldn't fit at the right spot on my keyboard

Looking forward to getting these keycaps next year! I hope the 1U R2 backspace can be considered! :P

Sorry that we couldn't accommodate ortho backspace for Colemak in this run. It didn't come to mind that there would be an overlap of Colemak and Ortho users.
Mac modifiers was definitely very tricky with the colour gradient... I'm sorry if it didn't satisfy your needs. If we run this set ever again with Mac kits I'll contact you for some feedback on where it could improve compatibility.

These are beautiful, but how could you make a Colemak but no Dvorak? I'm confused. Never seen that before.

Sorry about that.
Given the particularities of maintaining a gradient pattern, incorporating Dvorak compatibility with Colemak kit would have added a significant amount of keys (of which it already has in a Colemak only kit), and led to it being more expensive than what we wanted. As such, a decision was made to keep it Colemak + mod-DH only. If it was a non-gradient pattern, perhaps we could've provided Dvorak coverage. Given we had aimed for a 30 kit limit, we didn't want add another kit specific for other niche layouts such as Dvorak, Norman etc.
The reason why Colemak was picked over Dvorak was simply preference. The former is more recent layout, and a bit more familiar to qwerty users to learn, although I understand the latter maximises hand alternation, is reasonably well supported in OS and has a longer history of use.

Do you have a date for when the GB ends? I’d hate to miss it :(

It comes directly from the original artwork of "The Great Wave off Kanagawa"
You can see this in the inspiration part of this GB

The bottom six characters is the name of the piece, as mentioned.
The top is the name of the series that this piece belongs to: "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji"

Put in my order few days ago, super excited!!! First foray into groupbuys, pairing these  a e s t h e t i c  badboys up with my shiny new gmmk pro (another first :D )

Quick question since it's my first time joining a groupbuy that won't ship til literally a year later:

How is shipping handled if you're changing addresses in between placing an order for GB (aka now) and actual delivery of GB (aka next year)?
Would hate to have the keycaps disappear on me cause of negligence. If anything I'll keep my address updated via vendor (deskhero) but if anyone's got advice/experience regarding this, it would be nice.
Sorry for the newbie question, appreciate it! <3

Congrats on your first groupbuy and keyboard!
Usually people just contact their vendor when their shipping address changes to alter the order address. As long as you're not moving countries, it's not likely to effect shipping costs. It's pretty straight forward.  :thumb:
