Title: Losing Weight Together
Post by: drewba on Thu, 02 June 2016, 16:31:59
Do you want to lose weight, get that summer bod, ask for some accountability, set a goal, swap advice or change your lifestyle in general? Then this thread is for you.

I wanted to start a weight loss thread inspired by Dante's post here (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=82026.0) as a way of personally being transparent with my own progress & goals as well as seeing progress from others. Use this thread however you'd like. I'm always a fan of healthy meal suggestions or progress pics to keep the motivation up. I'll post about workouts and what not, but I'll also plug the GH Swolenation (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=73856.0) thread for gym/lifting related discussion.

Current goal: 180LBS
How I'm doing it:
More
This was written as a response, so it may be slightly out of context...
245lbs-190lbs over the course of 7 or 8 months. 85% diet, 15% exercise (lose weight in the kitchen, get fit in the gym). I have no one to blame but myself for getting fat, but I really wish someone would have stressed just how important diet is. Unless you are young or an athlete, you are never going to out-exercise a bad diet. In retrospect I feel like I could have lost all of the weight with diet alone, the exercise was just to allow me to eat more calories. I have kept it off for over a year and am currently back to losing weight with a goal of 180lbs. Here is what I did that worked:

1: Set a long term & short term goal. Short term = 1-2lbs lost/week. Long term: 50lbs lost, be able to do 10 consecutive pullups, 35 consecutive pushups, run a sub 9 minute mile.

2: Changed my relationship with food. Pizza & wings (and pastries) are treats, they are not an everyday dinner. Stopped eating out & drinking alcohol entirely (maybe a beer once in awhile IF I had a surplus of calories). Cooked all my own meals. Did a large food prep on the weekends so I couldn't make excuses to eat out). Shop only the perimeter of the grocery store (meat & produce). Substituted: popcorn for chips, Fruit or 35 calorie popsicles for ice cream, edamame for tv dinners, diet stuff/mio/crystal light for soda/beer/juice, etc. To this day I have an awful sweet tooth so I have to make a conscious effort to not even walk down the cookie aisle.

This is a pretty tough process at the beginning, but once you lose those first few pounds you realize really ****ing quick that it's not that hard and that you can do it.

These subreddits helped tremendously in terms of learning about healthy food & eating low calorie food period:
https://www.reddit.com/r/1200isplenty/
https://www.reddit.com/r/fitmeals
https://www.reddit.com/r/MealPrepSunday/
https://www.reddit.com/r/loseit/

3: Myfitnesspal.com. The real brains behind the operation. I plugged in my measurements, lifestyle (sedentary), told it how much I wanted to lose per week. The site told me if I ate 1640 calories per day that I would lose 1.5 pounds by the end of the week. If I burned 200 calories exercising I could eat those calories back. I logged all of my meals which is about a 20-30 minute process at the very beginning, it now takes me about 5 minutes a day maximum. I lost 0 pounds the first week because I didn't log in my meals strictly & lied about the portions. The second week I logged everything strictly and weighed my food. I lost 5 pounds. Nowadays it's like balancing a checkbook - I prelog my meals at the beginning of the day and if someone brings donuts in to work, I can easily say no because that would put me over my calorie budget.

MFP is free, has an app and can be an excellent support system because you can add friends and build a network of people that can teach & motivate you. I'd be sincerely happy to be your friend on MFP. Add me (http://www.myfitnesspal.com/profile/drewba13), that goes for anyone on GH.

4. Exercise! Again, not absolutely necessary to lose weight but I'd recommend at least a little bit for overall health, so you can eat more food or to lose weight a bit faster. At the time I didn't have access to a gym so I did a bodyweight routine at home called simplefit (http://www.simplefit.org/workout.html) which is 20 minutes of pullups, pushups, squats every other day. I can understand when people say they don't have time to go to the gym, but I literally couldn't talk myself out of 20 minutes of exercise that I could do at home. I threw in a long walk once a week and eventually transitioned that in to a run. Walking itself is seriously underrated, don't feel the pressure to run. It's bad for your knees anyways when you're big.

I'm trying to eat the same thing every day so I can evaluate my eating habits and adjust them a bit to shed a few pounds. Watermelon threw me off track but I've been hovering around 210-205 for the past year. Just need to find an enjoyable way to exercise.

I'll probably kickflip my weight away starting this year. ;D

I'm 182cm tall and weigh around 92-95kg. I feel that 81-86kg would probably be my sweet spot. I was at 68kg in my early twenties but that was because I was rationing out the ramen noodles.

I don't mind converting from lbs to kg; doesn't hurt my pride at all :)

Sorry, iri. Even us Americans know that metric is a better system. I'm 86kg, 183cm. I saw a picture you posted where you were at a 90s rave or something. Preeeeety sexy.

I'm a lazy piece of **** too. I spend minimum 14 hours a day in front of the computer and would much rather play counterstrike than exercise. I end up talking myself in to it a couple days a week but still it's a struggle. I got myself out of a rut by challenging some friends to lose weight with me and we put money on the line. Then I make some small changes like gave up soda/beer for awhile and stopped eating out 5 days a week and eventually some good habits stuck.

I lost a good 8kg or so a 6 months back in 6 weeks and then due to all the moving and all, couldn't continue the diet.

I finally decided that this was just an excuse and if I tried to find a solution I can make it work. I'm back on a low-carb diet that should hopefully keep me in ketosis (Although this is not a target),
-- Pre-breakfast (First thing after getting up and brushing my teeth ~8:30 AM): 2 tablespoon psyllium husk with three glasses of water (About 1L)
-- Breakfast (~9 AM): Protein pancake (1 scoop whey, 1 egg, 25g butter, cinammon), 100g plain yoghurt diluted with water and rock salt
-- Lunch (~2 PM): Protein shake (1 scoop whey, water, 50ml 25% cream, 1 egg)
-- Evening (~6PM): Protein shake (1 scoop whey, water, 50ml 25% cream, 1 egg)
-- Pre-dinner (As soon as I get back home from work ~9:30 PM): 2 tablespoon psyllium husk with three glasses of water (About 1L)
-- Dinner (~10 PM): 100g yoghurt diluted with water and rock salt, 25g butter

- Plenty of water through out the day
- 10k steps everyday
- Cheat day on Saturdays.

Height is 168 cm
Current weight is 78 kgs
Target 60 kgs

Edited post to better reflect the eating schedule

I lost a good 8kg or so a few months back and then due to all the moving and all, couldn't continue the diet.

I'm back on a low-carb diet that should most likely keep me in ketosis,
- Breakfast (9 AM): Protein pancake (1 scoop whey, 1 medium egg, 40g butter, cinammon), 100g yoghurt diluted with water and rock salt, 2 tablespoon psyllium husk
- Lunch (2 AM): Protein shake (1 scoop whey, water, 50ml thick cream, 1 medium egg)
- Evening (6PM): Something from the office canteen, made from beans or eggs.
- Dinner (10 PM): Tomato juice, 100g yoghurt diluted with water and rock salt, 2 tablespoon psyllium husk, 40g butter

Plenty of water through out the day
10k steps everyday
Cheat day on Saturdays.

Height is 168 cm
Current weight is 78kgs
Target 60 kgs

How do you consume the psyllium husk? Do you mix it in your yogurt? I've been mixing it with my protein shakes in the morning, but I'm not fond of the consistency it creates.
Title: Re: Losing Weight Together

Psyllium husk is quite commonly consumed in India, specifically to get consistent stool. It's magical in how how it helps with constipation as well as loose stool. I have always had exam anxiety and it always upset my stomach, I usually had psyllium husk, so the consistency has grown on me, so that's not an issue to me.

I usually just have it in a glass of water, mix it up well (This part is important for me as I've taken it dry and then when I drank the water, I chocked on it) and gulp it down. Followed by another two glasses of water. This itself is quite filling. This is the first thing I drink when I get up and the first thing when I get back home from work (around 9:30 PM). Breakfast and dinner usually follow about half an hour later.

I'm fat.

Welcome. You doing anything about it?
On and off.

This year has been super stressful and I've found comfort in eating. :(

Lately I don't want to do anything.

But I have tried incorporating more fresh and raw veggies into my lunches and only eating yogurt for breakfast and eating sensible portion sizes for dinner. Also I have to resist the urge to eat out of the vending machines at work.

I also sit all day in front of a computer for work.

Between work and the wife and kids there isn't much time left to do anything else.

I also don't get enough sleep.

I've physically felt bad enough lately I want to do something about it. I'm always exhausted and generally don't feel well.

Going to a gym is totally not an option for me so I'll be restricted to what I can squeeze in at home for 30 minutes to maybe an hour at night before bed.

My typical weekday goes like this

Wakeup 4am-4:45am
Arrive at work within  ~1hr
Eat my yogurt sometime between 6am-7am
Eat lunch sometime between 12-2pm
Leave work ~4pm
Arrive home ~4:30-5pm
Eat dinner sometime between 5:30-6:30pm
Hang with the family and do things around the house after dinner until kids go to bed typically at ~8:30-9pm
Go to bed ~10pm-11pm

@Ray,

Install a pedometer app on your phone, keep track of the number of steps you get in your usual day. Doc told me for most individuals, one should do at least 7k steps to prevent further wait gain and aim to do at least 10k steps to reduce it.

Cut down on your carbs, fruits seem nice but should be eaten in moderation, cut down on wheat as well, amke fats your main source of energy, eat the required amount of proteins.

The tiredness/exhaustion is from the surplus carbs in your body, cut those down and you'll start feeling better. You've gotten into a cycle, feel low and bad --> eat for comfort --> bad food makes you fat and messes you up --> feel low.

Do you eat sweetened yoghurt or plain?

I too don't find time to go to the gym, do dedicated exercises, etc, but do the 10k steps (Sometimes I miss, but will certainly do 7k everyday), by just walking while at lunch in the office, also commuting by public transport.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do when you say, spend time with the children? Physical activity?

7 hours of sleep is enough.

@moz

Hadn't thought to count steps with an app, I'll try that.

I eat flavored low fat Greek yogurt, 80 calories in 150g serving.

And yeah there's some physical activity in the evenings but not too much. Sometimes we go outside and play. The kids do all the running around not me :P

I typically get 5-6hrs of sleep.

Yup, get at least 6 hours of sleep, try to sleep 6-8 hours, sleeping too much is also bad.

Yoghurt doesn't seem to be adding too much to your problems, as I said you'll have to make some changes to your diet, cut down the carbs, increase healthy fats.

Maybe get some tests done to make sure you aren't diabetic/insulin resistant. Insulin resistance is quite common with fat people, for our kind it is better to get your calories from fat than carbs.

Sounds like a solid plan MOZ, though if you're only eating what you typed verbatim, I can't imagine you're eating enough. Thanks for typing all of that out - I'm going to check out psyllium husk. Seems like something I might like because I find satisfaction in volume.

But I have tried incorporating more fresh and raw veggies into my lunches and only eating yogurt for breakfast and eating sensible portion sizes for dinner. Also I have to resist the urge to eat out of the vending machines at work.

I also don't get enough sleep.

I've physically felt bad enough lately I want to do something about it. I'm always exhausted and generally don't feel well.

Thumbs up for making small adjustments, those are all things that can easily "stick" if you keep with it. I feel you on the vending machine, I purposefully do not keep change in my car and try not to have $1 bills in my wallet. I'd much prefer if I just had the willpower to say no but sometimes I literally do not. Sad.

Another thing is sweets at work, every other day someone is bringing in cookies or donuts. Did you know today is national donut day? My coworkers won't stop reminding me because they know I'm trying to lose weight.  I ate 1.5 donuts on Monday and felt sick as a dog.

Been working on this.  I'm almost in a recomp mode right now where I'm trying to increase my lifts while eating at/near maintenance levels.  I've started dropping a small bit of weight while slowly increasing my lifts but it's definitely a slower process than simply trying to focus on losing weight.

Fortunately the wife's finally on board with the whole weight loss thing and cooking as such so I don't have to worry about scorn for not eating her meals when she makes something not so weightloss friendly.

The thing that sucks about not eating enough is the hunger.  I've found some meals work well to help that out but otherwise, I've got to have filling low calorie snacks around for the inevitable stomach growl.

As it stands, it's almost noon and I've been hungry for at least the past hour despite my oatmeal + protein shake + coffee.

I try to keep caffeine in check.  I had two cups of coffee today which is unusual for me.  I do take a pre-workout at times with ~270mg of caffeine but try to limit that to days where I feel like absolute crap or I'm trying to hit a personal record on a lift.

But yeah, all this working out and lifting a lot means a lot of hunger happening and me trying to figure out how to handle my snacking in a manner suitable for weight loss.

Good luck to you! I know it's nearly impossible to gain muscle without eating over maintenance but I did a bodyweight routine while at a deficit and noticed I certainly was getting stronger. I took 6-7 months off to focus on cardio, I just got back to lifting and my strength is just gone. Also it's awesome when you can get your S.O. on board. There's nothing harder than someone tempting or guilting you at home...

That makes sense, quickly eyeballing your food plan I was assuming you might be eating under 1000 calories per day.

There's lots of fats and proteins in there, don't forget they have more calories.

About the hunger, proteins have been known to provide the most satiated feeling per gram of food eaten, followed by fiber and then fat. The Psyllium on its own can make you feel full for about two hours. If your body gets into ketosis, you feel hungry less often.

I also try to use my eating "timetable" more like a target rather than stressing over it. Often I feel a little hungry around 12 noon, I then drink a big glass of water and think to myself, just two more hours. Replace snacks with water.

I try not to eat too much during the day and save a nice meal for the evening. That way, even if you're bored of your early maintenance food, you can have something to look forward to.

Did a recalculation of what to eat and how much, looks like I'll be replacing the lunch from the cafeteria with a protein shake, it's hard to estimate what I'm eating there and what it's made of. Also slightly reducing the butter content to compensate for the fats in the second protein shake. Also eliminated the tomato juice becasue of carbs/calories. So now it looks like this,

I should add, I also have a number of vitamin/mineral supplements with this diet, these were prescribed to me by my endocrinologist (Seeing him for my insulin resistance).

It seems my body has gotten into full ketosis, I can usually tell as I start feeling slightly nauseated pretty much throughout the day as well as always feeling full. The nausea is a result of ketosis and also Victoza that I take for the insulin resistance. If I continue to feel as full, I most likely would have to replace the two shakes with one at around 4PM composing of 2 scoops whey, 50ml 25% cream, 1 egg and water.

Current macros, 98g protein, 30g carbs, 85g fat, 1280 calories. I used this excellent calculator to find what I need to eat and then adjusted my diet accordingly, http://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/.

I;d guess most of the early quick weight loss is just water.

I'm down another 3 pounds since my 5/27 weigh-in, which puts me at 6.91% bodyweight lost. I took a 30 mile bike ride on Sunday so needed to eat a lot of food back...ate a king size bag of Skittles and half a bag of pretzels before dinner. I don't feel great about that but technically I was still under my alotted calories so

I try not to eat too much during the day and save a nice meal for the evening. That way, even if you're bored of your early maintenance food, you can have something to look forward to.
I do this sometimes as well. For me it's a bad habit because oftentimes I'll have so many calories left over that I eat foods that are poor nutritionally (example above lol).

Count calories and exercise. Two simple things are the hardest to do :'(

It really is simple, though exercise can take a lot of time and it's real work. Counting calories is easy as hell once you get over that hump of like one week IMHO. It's turned in to an invaluable skill for me because I actually had to learn what a tablespoon of oil looked like (or actually measure it out), or how much 4oz of chicken actually is. Before I was eating basically double portions of everything and literally had no idea.

The reason that I like & use myfitnesspal is because it saves all of the food that I eat so logging in all of my food takes 5-10 minutes out of my day. I bought a food scale on amazon for $11 (Ozeri Pronto) to get familiar with food weights so I know exactly how much I'm eating but these days I don't even need to use it that much. You just get familiar with those foods that you eat over and over again.

Counting calories is very easy when your area's takeaway has thorough labels about its nutritional value (just like in the UK).

The funny thing here is that I've got working out locked in but zip on couting calories.  The real issue ends up being that my wife's the one doing the cooking rather than me so it's often just pure guesswork on my part since her recipes are often not particularly measured.

What I end up doing is trying to approximate based on various values from the old Weight Watchers point system that my wife did about 10 years ago.  It doesn't quite account for everything but is pretty helpful and we did well on it last time.  Now if we can just avoid the junk food, those AYCE Korean BBQ runs can still be reasonably okay once in a while :D

For me, on cheat days I ate a lot more than the calories I burn, but I believe a lot of it just goes out the system undigested. I always have a runny stomach at the end of the cheat day and the day after.

It does sound like a rather large breakfast, or lunch or dinner for breakfast. I never get lethargic after breakfast, but I do get lethargic after lunch.

I feel as if I have been gaining weight due to my job. I'm working 60 hr weeks and never have time to actually go food shopping, so I have been eating almost exclusively pizza and crap for the past two months or so.

Gained some weight because of it and generally feel like crap.

And it's every lunch too, I'll catch a ride with the usual group and all we ever get is Five Guys and pizza. Then when I get home I realize I have no food in the house and inevitably wind up ordering pizza or subs or some other form of greasy delivery.

It feels like my work life has forced me into unhealthy eating habits. Any tips on breaking this cycle - bearing in mind I don't have time for cooking or shopping, and rarely get a say on what's for lunch.

What iri said. At 5 guys, if you order the lowest calorie meal on the menu (Little Hamburger+ Fries + Water/Diet Something) that's 1433 calories (http://www.fiveguys.com/menu/nutrition). If you go home and follow that up with pizza you're just going to keep gaining. Two years ago I was working 2 jobs, roughly 60 hours a week and was eating out 5 days a week. I gained ~40lbs in a year. I hit a breaking point where I realized I felt like ass all the time because I was eating garbage food and was sure I was going to get diabetes or worse.

While I understand you're short on time, your work life hasn't forced you into unhealthy eating habits, you're making the decisions on what you eat. Take some responsibility. Quit geekhack/tv/videogames/whatever for a couple days a week and spend 2-3 hours grocery shopping & meal prep for the entire week. Buy some tupperware, 3-4lbs of chicken breast, 2 pounds of brown rice/pasta, a sauce that you like and a couple vegetables. Cook it, put it in containers, freeze what you're not going to eat in the next couple days and you're done. I guarantee it'll be cheaper than eating out as well as keep you fuller longer/make you feel better than eating fast food. Buy a big ass bag of almonds, granola bars, trail mix, popcorn, beef jerky, yogurt, hummus, carrots/celery/broccoli, etc and stash it at work. Most pizza places have sandwiches & salads, get that instead of pizza. McDonalds has a grilled chicken sandwich + side salad for under 395 calories (minus dressing). I don't have time right now to go through other fast food menus, but generally they have a somewhat healthy sandwich + fruit/salad/yogurt as a side instead of fries/chips. Got a Jimmy Johns around you?

I end up doing cheat meals more than cheat days.  That or cheat bonus items like ice cream.  The issue becomes when the family suddenly wants these items more than once in a week and my wife picks me up something even though I'm not there.  It's gotten better as she realizes she needs to lose weight and isn't actually doing as much as she thinks she is.

In my neck of the woods, one could order a vegetarian (perhaps vegan) meal from just about every delivery place in the phonebook. Although just because it's a vegetarian (or vegan) meal doesn't automatically mean it is healthy but it just might be a healthy alternative if you can stomach it.

A vegetarian meal should definitely have less saturated fats. At least in theory. Also, eating less red meat lowers the risk of cancer.

I think part of the difficulty is just genetics. If you think you are so hungry all the time when you actually just work in an office, then it's going to be a struggle. Unless you're doing hard physical labor, you don't need that much food. Like I said before, a good way to look at it is don't eat much until the evening, so you have something to look forward to. If you eat huge meals all day, it's just harder to get that momentum going of living lean. You don't want a big porker meal before the afternoon or at lunch unless you need that fuel for something that's actually physically strenuous (or maybe if you skipped dinner the night before)! You're just going to get hungry again later anyway. I often eat little to nothing for breakfast, and maybe a small lunch. Then a nice dinner and I never go to bed hungry. But sometimes fasting during the first half of the day actually gives me more energy, especially since I'm not all loaded with sugar! Mostly I eat just enough during the day to not feel like I'm lightheaded from too low blood sugar.

Lessen the portions, the stomach will shrink and you won't think that 'you are so hungry'. And that has nothing to do with genetics.

I used to blame genetics too for a long time. Not that they don't make a difference, everyone's body is different and different amount of efforts are required to gain/lose weight among many other differences, however taking steps in the direction to reverse the negative effects of your genetics is crucial. Cribbing isn't going to help. The way I see it, either care about your weight issues and do something or ignore it, by stressing you're only going to make it worse.

I work out on my lunch break.  I'd end up miserable with not eating until later in the day.  Even with intermittent fasting they recommend BCAAs while working out (morning workout) so you don't feel like absolute crap.  I've found that eating a bit more in the morning is more beneficial to me than loading up a bunch at night.  I've stated including a protein shake in my breakfast that I can just drink in the car on the way to work, then have my oatmeal at work.  I find if I eat more in the morning, it tends to keep me from getting as hungry for the rest of the day - I can do a two meal day with a sufficient brunch whereas a light breakfast will have me definitely wanting lunch and dinner.

I've recently re-discovered the power of oatmeal. Practically anything sweet and edible can be mixed into oatmeal and it fills me up.

Oatmeal is a go-to breakfast for me a lot of times.  Works well with milk and some protein powder.  Works well with milk, chia seeds, almond butter, and bananas then put in the fridge overnight (no heating as the oats will soak in the milk and turn nice and soft), great in blender shakes, and works well in pancakes.

I tend to do a lot of eggs when I'm at home, though, given the large amount of oatmeal I eat regularly for my breakfast at work.  It breaks things up a bit.  One other fun one is protein pancakes with some coconut flour.  That flour needs a lot of eggs.  The only problem is that the batter tends to take a bit to harden enough that you can flip.

Yep. I have no will power when it comes to trying to stop eating and trying to start exercising. Or for that matter changing just about anything, it's just too easy to stay in the rut.

But I can still say I'm in shape right? Round is a shape. Huehuehuehue. :(

Has alot to do with food prices as well..

They're alot lower relative to income in USA vs other nations..

For example..  China, 15-50% personal income is spent on food..

The USA,  1-5% of income..

There's a very GOOD reason America is Big,   Cheap food.. (http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/angel1-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862489)

I don't know anything about Strava, what are the pros/cons? I currently use MFP to track calories + social network. Then I use runkeeper to log miles/workouts. Realistically MFP is too much of a habit for me to move platforms but if Strava does workouts better than runkeeper I'd definitely be interested.

Drink H2O!!! My body confuses hunger with thirst often. I find that by drinking water, that "god damnit I'm hungry" feeling subsides to a "I guess I could eat if there was food in front of me, but I don't need to seek it out."

I always have eggs in the morning.. because of this very issue..

If I just eat something like Cereal or White rice,   I get hungry in 1 hour.. '

Eggs give you more energy for longer.

Bring more good food to work. The majority of vending machine options are going to be processed/low nutrition food. My vending machine has one healthy (debatable) option which is Baked Lays. Everything else is 200-450 calories. None of it is worth the calories and I'm just going to be hungry again in 90 minutes. I'm a volume eater so I'd much rather eat an entire pound of baby carrots for 190 calories than some chocolate or a pop tart.

Here is what I keep on hand at work to snack on

Yesterday I did bring an apple.

But I've eaten lunch for today and I'm hopefully good until tonight.

I'm always on the lookout for 'healthy' snacks though.

Bummer on the stomach issues. I'm always on the lookout for healthy snacks as well. I really wish beef jerky was like half the price because I can burn through a bag real quick

I do love the occasional biltong but it's expensive.

Typically I try to balance my main three meals each day to account for 3/4 of my calories, and then the remaining 1/4 for snacks. Biggest problem people do when dieting is thinking they can just eat lots of "healthy" foods. Portions are a big deal. Weight loss/maintaining weight and health all comes down to proper nutrition, regular exercise, and balancing your intake:outtake ratio.  Things that work well for me:

*Greek yogurt with fresh sliced fruit, high protein Nature Valley Oat & Honey granola, or sliced almonds. Buy the plain greek yogurt as the flavored ones either have lots of sugar or artificial sugars. Good protein source and very filling.
*Hummus and pita chips or sliced bell peppers, baby carrots, broccoli, etc.
*Real dark chocolate. I prefer about 70% and not stuff processed with alkali methods (reduces flavenols which have cardiovascular helping effects).
*Boiled eggs. Pinch of pepper or some hot sauce.
*String cheese made with 2% or just blocked cheddar with pita crackers.
*Sliced turkey or chicken deli meat.
*Smoked fish. Most expensive thing for a snack, but available easily if you're in a coastal area. Otherwise you can smoke it yourself with filets from the store.
*Apples, oranges, bananas, etc
*Regular flavored packets of oatmeal. Combine with some bits of dark chocolate for a supremely filling and tasty snack. Works for lunch too with some fruit on the side.

I combine this with a Fitbit Alta and MyFitnessPal on my phone. Log everything and the fitbit records my activity and when I run. If you can find one, many pharmacies can help you measure your resting metabolism so you can calculate your daily base calorie intake. Create a mental drive to be healthy, commit to it, hold yourself responsible by telling friends and family about your plan, and check your stats every month. It's a slow burn but it works. I lost 40 lbs after college with this (no Fitbit or smart phone then lol), and still continue to battle my work-induced degradation.

I'm really not sure about the high-fats diet..

Liver and gall-bladder has to work very extra hard to digest high fat intakes..

Whereas high carb diet is a much straighter and cleaner conversion...

Weight gain is about calories. What your body is composed of and fat loss is controlled with macro nutrient intake. People overthink diets and strategy to provide an easyout to avoid accepting that they're being lazy and not exercising enough.

I've been trimming the fat as of late trying to keep everything I eat really lean. The first few days I had insane amounts of energy but I guess my body adjusted and now I'm pretty much back to normal energy. I'm trying to drink less caffeine so that I can burn more fat, but skipping my morning coffee is nearly impossible for me to do these days.

So..... basically, ADHD amphetamines, worked really well for weightloss on this kid.

I've tried the stim/caffeine/weight loss pills. They made my body feel foreign and I'm pretty sure my resting heart rate was 120+ all day. And I didn't lose any weight (obviously). Do not recommend. Speaking of amphetamines, I recently learned that Vyvanse is sometimes used to treat binge-eating disorder. I did some adderall in college and can confirm eating is the last thing on your mind. I recommend it for a good time, writing a business plan, giving your home a deep cleaning but not for weight loss.

In other news, weigh in today was the first time in 6 weeks that I haven't recorded a loss. I'm thinking that has something to do with the ~5000mg of sodium I consumed yesterday AKA water retention. If it's not that maybe I hit a plateau but I sure hope not. A friend of mine owns a burger place which I will be stuffing my face at on Saturday and  I'm taking my dad out to an italian restaurant on Sunday for father's day. In anticipation for two "bad" eating days I'm planning a 10 mile hike Saturday and a ~25 mile bike ride on Sunday. Y'all doing anything?

I can say if you are trying to lose weight going out to eat is a bad choice. It's so easy to go over your caloric intake.

Went to Red Robin yesterday and looked up my food when I got home because I was curious. A burger and fries + a milkshake  - it was over 2000 calories for that one meal alone.

These Russian sweets were irresistible, so to burn some extra calories I cycled to a pub on Thursday instead of taking a bus.

Also, why would one eat chips with a burger, which already has enough carbs in form of bread?

Saturday's are a cheat day, so yesterday (Friday), I went to the store to pickup some sweets. Now, just a background, I'm Indian and I have a sweet tooth; the Indian cuisine probably has the most variety and number of desserts. The protein shakes I have are in chocolate and vanilla flavor, so I didn't want anything with close to those flavors. So back to the store, I'm standing in their in sweets aisle and I just can't decide what I want to eat, I'm there for a good 15 mins and I come back home empty handed.

Back home, I'm standing in front of the mirror and thinking, "who the hell is this guy". Not sure to be happy or sad.

I just recently realized that for the first time that I've been with my wife (almost 5 years now) I weigh more than she does.  She has lost around 55 pounds since when she had our youngest son about 18 months ago and is down to 150 pounds, but when we started dating I was borderline underweight as I'm 5'9" and weighed about 120 pounds, now I'm almost up to 175!  I have been eating out a lot at work so I'm gonna try curbing that along with late-night munchies, maybe get some exercise too as long as it's not running.

Just now, I managed to only eat Half a bagel

hax

Anyway, my strategy: soup, salad, fish, as much as possible. Add "miracle noodles" to soups for filler. Don't buy snackfood, since it'll all just get eaten. If snackfood is necessary, jerky is good, but expensive, especially if you're a snob (I'm a snob).

Also: I find I do better if I avoid "easy" foods. Laziness can be made to work for the diet, if you have literally nothing in the house you can eat without making a whole recipe.

Yea,, all good tips..

Although Ramen is ... Tp4 can't live without it ... It gives me +30 Troll-Mana-Regen (http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/embarrassed3-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862502)

I've tried going with Jerky,  but it's just too much salt to eat much of... Not really a snack.. I've tried munching on a piece for --longer,  like you would with gum,  but it doesn't last long before becoming what's identical to chewing card-board..

--Yes, Tp4 has tried to eat card-board, so what, everyone's done it !!

What's a good munching food? During the day I need something to snack on, not because I'm always hungry, but just as something to do at my desk.

I usually eat almonds or cashews, sometimes craisens, dates, or wasabi peas. I like a snack that's either salty and crunchy or sweet. Nuts are a bit high in calories but they keep me super regular. Dates are caloric laden too I think.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for healthy snacking foods?

Yeah, I actually typed out an entire paragraph rambling about how much I hate the taste of raw carrots and celery specifically but deleted it because it was detracting from my overall question.

Guess I should've left it in. But yeah, raw carrots taste like dirt and celery just tastes like something that is not meant for human consumption.

Popcorn looks like it's about 200-250 calories per bag, which isn't too terrible considering it's carbs.

Oh ok. Rice cakes, especially brown rice cakes, are filling and very few calories and taste great with a little peanut butter.

Air popped popcorn is great cause there is no butter or salt and is fairly nutritious.

100 calorie Kettle Corn is good. Butter is fine, just barely any butter.

If you're not in to carrots or celery just pick another vegetable. Or dip it some low calorie dressing. Paul Newman's Own Lite balsamic & sesame ginger dressings are only 35-45 calories per 2tbsp. Maple Grove Poppyseed is also the **** http://www.maplegrove.com/products/dressings/fat-free-dressings/poppyseed

Nice read! The Mindset portion particularly resonates with me - "You get in shape, and more importantly stay in shape, by accumulating significant, but livable, improvements to your lifestyle over time, and building on that. Not by going through some horrible ordeal requiring Olympian willpower." Before I actually lost weight I repeatedly tried crash course diets or going balls to the wall in the gym. If I did lose any weight I'd gain it all back because I didn't actually learn anything and my willpower to go to the gym 5 days a week would fade.

It's tricky but it can be done.  I tend to focus on places where they've got the calories listed or I know I can get a good meal within a certain level of calories.  Though I admit, living in the Los Angeles area gives me a pretty wide array of options there.  In many cases, I will just skip a meal or have a very light meal if we're planning on eating out.  Particularly if it's something like all you can eat Korean BBQ or sushi.

Gave up about as quick as the last time,   Eating carrots/celery is just as unpleasant as exercise..

I do this too. If I have been good for a few days or skipped a meal or two that day I'll get something really bad for me.

Admittedly this happens more than I'd like and am trying to cut down cheat day to once a week.

It's really damn difficult if you are a lover of food and eating out. Hard to enjoy your salad when you see grilled marrow and bruschetta or something on the menu.

I was doing good on weight loss.

Then Father's Day weekend hit.  I think I recovered from that.

Then the cafeteria had buttered chicken today.  Not the best I've had but for the cafeteria, a decent effort.  I have a feeling I'm going to need some more calorie burning efforts this weekend to help offset things.

Sigh.

IMHO it's important to celebrate events/holidays. When I first started losing weight I turned in to kind of a hermit, turning down invites to go to restaurants or birthdays. I was kind lame and missed out on a lot of fun stuff friends & family were doing. I should have just made smart eating decisions instead and still get to enjoy life. Plus I'm never going to pass up buttered chicken, I might have a small portion but c'mon, it's buttered chicken ;D

I quite like indian food...

But basically, I've had to stop going to their restaurant because basically, eventually, you'd need to buy new clothes...  and...... the cost of clothes ontop of the food.. hahahaha...

Two years ago I was 235 and felt like ****, wearing 40" waist jeans and filling large shirts.  My ex was a good cook of things that were bad for me/us, and her limited mobility and can't-be-alone-ness (leukemia and chemo/rejection/etc 10 years prior really ****ed her up) led to being Netflix junkies (as I was dying inside).  I couldn't take it anymore, so we split and I moved out.  Six months later my diet was less tasty and I was down to about 220, I started going to the gym with a buddy of mine and had a lofty goal of hitting 185 in a year.  Last summer I hit 195 and was feeling a lot better, salads and ground turkey were a boon, but I wasn't going to the gym anymore.  I started this year at 185 and hit 172 by april when I went back to school for my final 6 weeks.  The stress of my final term and huge federal final exam had a terrible impact on me, my diet was terrible due to lack of time but I was still pounding back the salads, I was an emotional wreck and felt like ****.  I finished school 5 weeks ago (98.75% avg over 4 years, 95% on federal exam, weeee), and I've been eating out too much with the friends I had to disappear from while in school, so here I am back at 180.  I'm down to 34" waist jeans and medium shirts, and feel hella better than I did even 1 year ago, let alone 2 years ago.  I felt great at 172 before the stress hit so I'm aiming to get down to 170 soon, I'm 5'11" so it should be a good weight.

I still have a gym membership ($22cdn/month), but I have no idea what I'm doing when I'm there and lack time/motivation to go back.  My friend that I went with before was into building muscle, all I want is to be stronger/healthier at the weight I want.  I do need to go there and get exercise though, I've been told it'll help with the other issues I've got.

Look up a weightlifting program to run, like starting strength, if you have a program to follow it makes going to the gym easier.

Starting Strength, Stronglifts, and Greyskull LP are all solid beginner lifting programs.  Really,  most any linear progression routine is a good starting point.  You'll make good progress, though many have tweaked those to run bench twice a week and OHP once a week rather than alternate them once/twice a week.

Though don't call them weightlifting programs.  Maybe weight lifting, but not weightlifting.  The spaceless version is officially the term for what we know as Olympic lifting - the snatch and clean & jerk.

There is some solid advice here that I would like to echo, while adding my own.

1. Stop crash dieting.

2. Download MyFitnessPal (or another calorie tracking app, though MFP tends to be the most popular)

3. Buy a food scale (I have been actively gaining weight for the past year, and a food scale has been the most useful tool. It will greatly assist those of you attempting to lose.)

4. Find something you enjoy doing (running, lifting weights, bike riding, swimming, trampolines, whatever) and do it, consistently.

5. Be dedicated to yourself and your goals.

Weight loss and gain do not actually happen overnight.  It takes time to become overweight, and it takes time to lose weight.  You CAN do it.  reddit.com/r/progresspics is very inspirational.  Don't look at this as a short-term goal (i.e. I want to look good for the beach in 3 months).  Look at this as a lifestyle change, and make changes gradually. You don't have to hit the gym 5 days a week and only eat celery. That is insane.  Start simply by replacing a junk food in your life with a healthier option.  Then do it again. Maybe start your activity 1-2x per week for 20 minutes each time.  Then add a day and/or up the time.  Once you make it routine, it becomes habit, and then honestly you become as addicted to it as you were the junk food or the laziness.

Some of you don't like to exercise, and while you don't have to exercise to lose weight, it is preferred for general health, accelerated weight loss, and improved body composition (fat vs muscle).  Still, the majority of weight loss happens in the kitchen, so start there. Find your TDEE (which MFP will help estimate) and eat 300-500 calories less than that.  MFP will actually guide you towards the correct number of calories to eat based on your goals.

Do not be misled by misinformation.  There is a lot of it out there. You can lose weight by only eating candy bars. Seriously.  It would not at all be healthy, but it could be done.  So long as you use more calories than you consume, YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT.  You are not the exception. YOU ARE NOT THE EXCEPTION.  (If you really think you are, then you need to seek medical advice.)

There is time.  You have to make it. "I have no time" is merely an excuse.  If you want something, you make the time, period.

You will stumble. Get up and keep moving.

Don't let others hold you back. Do not let others make you feel guilty about losing weight. Generally, that is their envy talking or misplaced idea about healthy weight.

Don't pay attention to the scale. It will lie.  Your weight fluctuates greatly depending on food inside of you, temperature, and or water.  You can use the scale as a guide, but do not let it discourage you. Look in the mirror. How do your clothes fit?  Those are your indicators.

Hey, congratulations, you lost weight!  Now you move on to the hard part, keeping it off.

Keep doing what you are doing.

tl;dr  PM me for information and/or advice. I am not an expert, and I know my limit. I have been lifting weights and eating very healthy for the past couple of years, and I have learned a lot. At least I can point you to some resources.

There is a Steven Seagall movie called On Deadly Ground; in the bar fight scene the dialogue goes like this:

Forrest Taft: What does it take, what does it take to change the essence of a man?
Big Mike: I need time to change... I need time.
Forrest Taft: I do too.

So I'm kind of approaching that with dieting.  :p

Well to be honest that is smart. Make little changes over time and it will be easier to make those changes last.

All good stuff, I particularly appreciate "Weight loss and gain do not actually happen overnight.  It takes time to become overweight, and it takes time to lose weight." Pretty much everyone interested in losing weight tries a crash diet, pills or a couple months of ultra intense exercising before they burn out and go right back to bad habits. This was me spanning ages 23-26, then completely gave up for the next couple years. When I was 28 I had 7 weddings to attend, stood up in 3. Getting fitted for suits was an eye-opening experience because my pants size went up every fitting. Seeing photos of myself after each wedding was a worse and worse experience. I was a size 40 waist, had a nice set of manboobs and felt like getting diabetes was inevitable. I had always heard people talk **** about calorie counting, they'd suggest it's emasculating and to just work harder.

But then I tried it and my life is now completely different in the best way. After I lost 50lbs the right way I posted about it on facebook and offered sincere advice for anyone that wanted to change. A few of my larger friends were immediately uninterested in doing anything after I mentioned they need to make slow, methodical, sustainable changes to their life for this to work and that they weren't going to lose 100lbs in a few months. I pointed out that they've spent the past several years gaining weight, why did they think it was reasonable that they could lose what they've gained in months?

That was a bit of a ramble, anwyays, add me on MFP, I'm 15 days away from a 2 years streak! http://www.myfitnesspal.com/profile/drewba13

APPLEONAMA you still haven't added me you boner

Congratulations my man!

My final weigh-in for a weight loss challenge amongst friends is this friday. If I win I get 300 big ones and some serious bragging rights because I started with the lowest amount of fat in the group. I'm going to have to be grossly strict with my diet tomorrow (few carbs, low sodium, reduced water intake). Not looking forward to that.

What I'm noticing on my end is flour based products like bread and tortillas significantly constipate me.  I don't stop eating them but I do put a 72 hour ban prior to weigh in.

What's up with Asian cartoons showing people getting nosebleeds during inappropriate moments?

Sudden increase in blood pressure = nosebleed geysers ofc

Oh, ha ha!

There is some science to this..  During dry weather months.. a sudden increase in blood pressure COULD theoretically cause nose bleeds..

Should there be a Geekhack weight-loss Pool?

I like it. I'm doing a weight loss pool right now with friends and can confirm it may promote bad habits like eating at too much of a deficit, too much exercise or bodybuilder/wrestler style weigh-ins which will leave you weak & dehydrated. That said, it was an amazing catalyst to get 7 overweight guys focused on losing weight. I'd suggest removing the money element out of it so people aren't in a "do anything it takes to win" type of mindset, also it's not especially hard to photoshop a picture of a scale if you know what you're doing. Some friendly competition with the prize of bragging rights sounds like a good time.

Here are the rules my friends and I are currently using:
-The person who loses the most percentage of their body weight wins
-8 week weight loss period
-Weigh in every Friday AM - technically this isn't necessary considering the point below but it keeps people motivated and accountable.
-The last Friday weigh-in of the 8 weeks is the only number that matters
-Must take a photo of the scale every weigh-in (use the same scale the entire 8 weeks)

If you are interested in doing a friendly weight loss (bragging rights) pool, please post your interest in this thread.

Maybe we could shoot to start sometime next week. Us 'merkans are probably going to fatten up a bit over 4th of July weekend so anytime after Monday might be a good time to start. I have a google docs spreadsheet we can use to get started.

Well, the weekend didn't turn out as bad as I'd feared.  Went 2 meals a day since the wife kept eyeing some pretty heavy food.  We at least made it to the park yesterday so I got to run and play basketball a bit before walking 1.7 miles to get dinner and watch fireworks, then 1.7 up hill back to the car.  The pants/belt say things didn't go too bad over the weekend.

Weighed myself on Sunday.  For the first time in... 2 or 3 years, I'm back under 190 lbs.  The goal is to get down to 175 and bulk up to 181 for competition but I think the holidays may interfere with that a bit.  Might due a couple short bulks in Nov/Dec to make it through the holidays before adjusting back.  That puts my first competition at 181 to some point next year if I want to make progress on my lifts and also make it down to 181.

I must say, tracking calories on MyFitnessPal has been rather helpful in keeping me on track.

Hovering at 205 since my first post in this thread. If I can make it through the holidays without gaining a pound I'll be set.

Thanks for the bump iri & nice job staying healthy guys.

I'm sort of maintaining weight...bouncing between 187-193lbs for the past few months. Two months ago I finally kicked a casual dip/snus habit because it's not healthy and a completely unnecessary cost. I only did it a few days a week but since quitting my appetite has been insatiable. I don't miss tobacco at all but holy **** do I want food all the time. I'm chewing a ton of gum and pounding water but still catch myself mindlessly eating. I'm getting married in 3 weeks and really wanted to get below 180lbs to be cut for the honeymoon but I don't think that's going to happen unless I do something drastic. #firstworldproblems

Try eating veggies when you're hungry but don't want to eat a ton of calories.
