I just recently realized that for the first time that I've been with my wife (almost 5 years now) I weigh more than she does.  She has lost around 55 pounds since when she had our youngest son about 18 months ago and is down to 150 pounds, but when we started dating I was borderline underweight as I'm 5'9" and weighed about 120 pounds, now I'm almost up to 175!  I have been eating out a lot at work so I'm gonna try curbing that along with late-night munchies, maybe get some exercise too as long as it's not running.

Just now, I managed to only eat Half a bagel

hax

Anyway, my strategy: soup, salad, fish, as much as possible. Add "miracle noodles" to soups for filler. Don't buy snackfood, since it'll all just get eaten. If snackfood is necessary, jerky is good, but expensive, especially if you're a snob (I'm a snob).

Also: I find I do better if I avoid "easy" foods. Laziness can be made to work for the diet, if you have literally nothing in the house you can eat without making a whole recipe.

Yea,, all good tips..

Although Ramen is ... Tp4 can't live without it ... It gives me +30 Troll-Mana-Regen

I've tried going with Jerky,  but it's just too much salt to eat much of... Not really a snack.. I've tried munching on a piece for --longer,  like you would with gum,  but it doesn't last long before becoming what's identical to chewing card-board..

--Yes, Tp4 has tried to eat card-board, so what, everyone's done it !!

Saturday's are a cheat day, so yesterday (Friday), I went to the store to pickup some sweets. Now, just a background, I'm Indian and I have a sweet tooth; the Indian cuisine probably has the most variety and number of desserts. The protein shakes I have are in chocolate and vanilla flavor, so I didn't want anything with close to those flavors. So back to the store, I'm standing in their in sweets aisle and I just can't decide what I want to eat, I'm there for a good 15 mins and I come back home empty handed.

Back home, I'm standing in front of the mirror and thinking, "who the hell is this guy". Not sure to be happy or sad.

Just now, I managed to only eat Half a bagel.. Took alotta courage..   now the other half is just sitting there, taunting me...

High five you two. I also have an insatiable sweet tooth and put candy back on the shelf a couple times when I was in the market this weekend.

What's a good munching food? During the day I need something to snack on, not because I'm always hungry, but just as something to do at my desk.

I usually eat almonds or cashews, sometimes craisens, dates, or wasabi peas. I like a snack that's either salty and crunchy or sweet. Nuts are a bit high in calories but they keep me super regular. Dates are caloric laden too I think.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for healthy snacking foods?

Yeah, I actually typed out an entire paragraph rambling about how much I hate the taste of raw carrots and celery specifically but deleted it because it was detracting from my overall question.

Guess I should've left it in. But yeah, raw carrots taste like dirt and celery just tastes like something that is not meant for human consumption.

Popcorn looks like it's about 200-250 calories per bag, which isn't too terrible considering it's carbs.

Oh ok. Rice cakes, especially brown rice cakes, are filling and very few calories and taste great with a little peanut butter.

Air popped popcorn is great cause there is no butter or salt and is fairly nutritious.

100 calorie Kettle Corn is good. Butter is fine, just barely any butter.

If you're not in to carrots or celery just pick another vegetable. Or dip it some low calorie dressing. Paul Newman's Own Lite balsamic & sesame ginger dressings are only 35-45 calories per 2tbsp. Maple Grove Poppyseed is also the **** http://www.maplegrove.com/products/dressings/fat-free-dressings/poppyseed

Nice read! The Mindset portion particularly resonates with me - "You get in shape, and more importantly stay in shape, by accumulating significant, but livable, improvements to your lifestyle over time, and building on that. Not by going through some horrible ordeal requiring Olympian willpower." Before I actually lost weight I repeatedly tried crash course diets or going balls to the wall in the gym. If I did lose any weight I'd gain it all back because I didn't actually learn anything and my willpower to go to the gym 5 days a week would fade.

I can say if you are trying to lose weight going out to eat is a bad choice. It's so easy to go over your caloric intake.

Went to Red Robin yesterday and looked up my food when I got home because I was curious. A burger and fries + a milkshake  - it was over 2000 calories for that one meal alone.

It's tricky but it can be done.  I tend to focus on places where they've got the calories listed or I know I can get a good meal within a certain level of calories.  Though I admit, living in the Los Angeles area gives me a pretty wide array of options there.  In many cases, I will just skip a meal or have a very light meal if we're planning on eating out.  Particularly if it's something like all you can eat Korean BBQ or sushi.

These two were the first things I tried to start with when I went on Tp4-Unfat-2016..

Gave up about as quick as the last time,   Eating carrots/celery is just as unpleasant as exercise..

I do this too. If I have been good for a few days or skipped a meal or two that day I'll get something really bad for me.

Admittedly this happens more than I'd like and am trying to cut down cheat day to once a week.

It's really damn difficult if you are a lover of food and eating out. Hard to enjoy your salad when you see grilled marrow and bruschetta or something on the menu.

Yeah, I'm trying to keep the really bad food consumption to a minimum.  This past weekend wasn't kind to me either.  I'm now in recovery mode from Father's Day combined with kids' award celebration day on Saturday.

I should eat carrots more often, but I'm all over the popcorn. I need to read a book about discipline or something to keep me off the oil and salt though

I was doing good on weight loss.

Then Father's Day weekend hit.  I think I recovered from that.

Then the cafeteria had buttered chicken today.  Not the best I've had but for the cafeteria, a decent effort.  I have a feeling I'm going to need some more calorie burning efforts this weekend to help offset things.

Sigh.

IMHO it's important to celebrate events/holidays. When I first started losing weight I turned in to kind of a hermit, turning down invites to go to restaurants or birthdays. I was kind lame and missed out on a lot of fun stuff friends & family were doing. I should have just made smart eating decisions instead and still get to enjoy life. Plus I'm never going to pass up buttered chicken, I might have a small portion but c'mon, it's buttered chicken ;D

Two years ago I was 235 and felt like ****, wearing 40" waist jeans and filling large shirts.  My ex was a good cook of things that were bad for me/us, and her limited mobility and can't-be-alone-ness (leukemia and chemo/rejection/etc 10 years prior really ****ed her up) led to being Netflix junkies (as I was dying inside).  I couldn't take it anymore, so we split and I moved out.  Six months later my diet was less tasty and I was down to about 220, I started going to the gym with a buddy of mine and had a lofty goal of hitting 185 in a year.  Last summer I hit 195 and was feeling a lot better, salads and ground turkey were a boon, but I wasn't going to the gym anymore.  I started this year at 185 and hit 172 by april when I went back to school for my final 6 weeks.  The stress of my final term and huge federal final exam had a terrible impact on me, my diet was terrible due to lack of time but I was still pounding back the salads, I was an emotional wreck and felt like ****.  I finished school 5 weeks ago (98.75% avg over 4 years, 95% on federal exam, weeee), and I've been eating out too much with the friends I had to disappear from while in school, so here I am back at 180.  I'm down to 34" waist jeans and medium shirts, and feel hella better than I did even 1 year ago, let alone 2 years ago.  I felt great at 172 before the stress hit so I'm aiming to get down to 170 soon, I'm 5'11" so it should be a good weight.

I still have a gym membership ($22cdn/month), but I have no idea what I'm doing when I'm there and lack time/motivation to go back.  My friend that I went with before was into building muscle, all I want is to be stronger/healthier at the weight I want.  I do need to go there and get exercise though, I've been told it'll help with the other issues I've got.

Look up a weightlifting program to run, like starting strength, if you have a program to follow it makes going to the gym easier.

Starting Strength, Stronglifts, and Greyskull LP are all solid beginner lifting programs.  Really,  most any linear progression routine is a good starting point.  You'll make good progress, though many have tweaked those to run bench twice a week and OHP once a week rather than alternate them once/twice a week.

Though don't call them weightlifting programs.  Maybe weight lifting, but not weightlifting.  The spaceless version is officially the term for what we know as Olympic lifting - the snatch and clean & jerk.

There is some solid advice here that I would like to echo, while adding my own.

1. Stop crash dieting.

2. Download MyFitnessPal (or another calorie tracking app, though MFP tends to be the most popular)

3. Buy a food scale (I have been actively gaining weight for the past year, and a food scale has been the most useful tool. It will greatly assist those of you attempting to lose.)

4. Find something you enjoy doing (running, lifting weights, bike riding, swimming, trampolines, whatever) and do it, consistently.

5. Be dedicated to yourself and your goals.

Weight loss and gain do not actually happen overnight.  It takes time to become overweight, and it takes time to lose weight.  You CAN do it.  reddit.com/r/progresspics is very inspirational.  Don't look at this as a short-term goal (i.e. I want to look good for the beach in 3 months).  Look at this as a lifestyle change, and make changes gradually. You don't have to hit the gym 5 days a week and only eat celery. That is insane.  Start simply by replacing a junk food in your life with a healthier option.  Then do it again. Maybe start your activity 1-2x per week for 20 minutes each time.  Then add a day and/or up the time.  Once you make it routine, it becomes habit, and then honestly you become as addicted to it as you were the junk food or the laziness.

Some of you don't like to exercise, and while you don't have to exercise to lose weight, it is preferred for general health, accelerated weight loss, and improved body composition (fat vs muscle).  Still, the majority of weight loss happens in the kitchen, so start there. Find your TDEE (which MFP will help estimate) and eat 300-500 calories less than that.  MFP will actually guide you towards the correct number of calories to eat based on your goals.

Do not be misled by misinformation.  There is a lot of it out there. You can lose weight by only eating candy bars. Seriously.  It would not at all be healthy, but it could be done.  So long as you use more calories than you consume, YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT.  You are not the exception. YOU ARE NOT THE EXCEPTION.  (If you really think you are, then you need to seek medical advice.)

There is time.  You have to make it. "I have no time" is merely an excuse.  If you want something, you make the time, period.

You will stumble. Get up and keep moving.

Don't let others hold you back. Do not let others make you feel guilty about losing weight. Generally, that is their envy talking or misplaced idea about healthy weight.

Don't pay attention to the scale. It will lie.  Your weight fluctuates greatly depending on food inside of you, temperature, and or water.  You can use the scale as a guide, but do not let it discourage you. Look in the mirror. How do your clothes fit?  Those are your indicators.

Hey, congratulations, you lost weight!  Now you move on to the hard part, keeping it off.

Keep doing what you are doing.

tl;dr  PM me for information and/or advice. I am not an expert, and I know my limit. I have been lifting weights and eating very healthy for the past couple of years, and I have learned a lot. At least I can point you to some resources.

There is a Steven Seagall movie called On Deadly Ground; in the bar fight scene the dialogue goes like this:

Forrest Taft: What does it take, what does it take to change the essence of a man?
Big Mike: I need time to change... I need time.
Forrest Taft: I do too.

So I'm kind of approaching that with dieting.  :p

Well to be honest that is smart. Make little changes over time and it will be easier to make those changes last.

All good stuff, I particularly appreciate "Weight loss and gain do not actually happen overnight.  It takes time to become overweight, and it takes time to lose weight." Pretty much everyone interested in losing weight tries a crash diet, pills or a couple months of ultra intense exercising before they burn out and go right back to bad habits. This was me spanning ages 23-26, then completely gave up for the next couple years. When I was 28 I had 7 weddings to attend, stood up in 3. Getting fitted for suits was an eye-opening experience because my pants size went up every fitting. Seeing photos of myself after each wedding was a worse and worse experience. I was a size 40 waist, had a nice set of manboobs and felt like getting diabetes was inevitable. I had always heard people talk **** about calorie counting, they'd suggest it's emasculating and to just work harder.

But then I tried it and my life is now completely different in the best way. After I lost 50lbs the right way I posted about it on facebook and offered sincere advice for anyone that wanted to change. A few of my larger friends were immediately uninterested in doing anything after I mentioned they need to make slow, methodical, sustainable changes to their life for this to work and that they weren't going to lose 100lbs in a few months. I pointed out that they've spent the past several years gaining weight, why did they think it was reasonable that they could lose what they've gained in months?

That was a bit of a ramble, anwyays, add me on MFP, I'm 15 days away from a 2 years streak! http://www.myfitnesspal.com/profile/drewba13

APPLEONAMA you still haven't added me you boner
