5070ti having only 12gb on mobile, and 5070 and below with 8gb.
Upsetting. Completely non-viable gpus.
There shouldn't be any gpu below 16gb.
Nvidia is having problems selling 8gb GPUs and has completely scaled back production of those cards.

GOOD!

Intel needs to really make 1 thing work, stop with all this nonsense, Nvidia partnership, Arc, E-cores.
They need partnerships to get out of the hole they dug.

Making Stuff Together! / Re: Are Kailh hot-swap sockets still fragile?
« Last post by Leslieann on Sun, 19 October 2025, 10:29:50 »
Is there some way to support sockets from behind to reduce the risk of breakage?
Some KB makers recommend supporting the board/socket from behind while inserting switches, as in disassemble it to swap switches. Also it's not just the sockets that are fragile, the switch legs are as well.

These will NEVER be good*.
These are basically a hacky way of making something hot swap that was never intended to be, it's a compromised design from the start and will never be good without redesigning the switch, socket and PCB and doing so would destroy backwards compatibility.

*I do use them but only because there's really no alternative.

Other Geeky Stuff / Re: In the market for Laptops?

Dell XPS!
Dell XPS look nice and check all of the boxes, they have for a long time, strong, reliable, but they've also been the buggiest laptops I've ever dealt with. Nice laptops, just not something I can rely on, research your intended model for bugs before you buy as some are pretty bad.

No brand is perfect, I also don't recommend slim-lid touchscreen Lenovos (Idea Pad mostly), them, HP and Dell all have had issues with the glued hinges coming off the lid and breaking/shattering the screen. Not cheap or fast to repair (parts are often difficult to get) and many shops will refuse to even work on them because of this, cost/value and the fact that they can't warranty the work.

Sodas are probably more addictive than coffee.

I disagree. By my early 30s I was indifferent to "soft drinks" except for tonic water (quinine) which I continued drinking as my daytime "special" drink of choice through my 40s.

Since carbonated drinks appeal to me, I do still enjoy seltzer water, but I am happy to do without the sugar (aka high-fructose corn syrup) and caffeine.

At present, I am in one of my periodic non-coffee periods. It is harder to wake up but sleeping is better ....

Keyboard Keycaps / Re: 13 years ago i bought these keycaps here from a group buy

Oh! A fellow old-timer... :3
Greetings, and welcome back!

Things really went out of control...
I was surprised myself after returning 2 months ago:

- Cherry MX patent ran out -> Over 9000 different variants of MX-style switches from China
- These little switch quick-swap thingies on PCBs (what to do with my solder iron now!?)
- Transition to gasket-mount keyboards (no more resonance PING! like in the old days...)
- Having more mech-keyboard brands than Filco, Topre, Cherry, IBM, KBC and Razer
- We still can't decide if LEDs should be mounted north or south facing
- Mech-keyboards became mainstream (are we still Geeks?)
- CNC-milled metal keyboard-cases became affordable
- MassDrop became keyboard-centric and bought GH
- You can get custom dye-sub printed keycaps (YUZU)
- Ripster selling his keyboard-collection
- People collecting artisan-keycaps

Oil-Kings are a great choice I think...
I have tested a heap-load of switches recently to catch-up.
For linear ones, Oil-Kings were my favorites. I also liked the Zjmehty ones. Both are superior to vintage MX-Blacks imo.
Finding a superior replacement for Ergo-Clears and Zealios V2 ended up much more complicated. Still not done testing.

Old timer yes but i was not that dedicated. This place was super lively years ago, now theres too much competitition.
Like you i was blown away by the amount of choice and affordability of 2025 compared to 2010.
Canīt wait to receive my keyboard, i miss the clack and funny colors.
