History

One day, not long ago, I was browsing RAMA WORKS' website, contemplating the M60-A in Moon, and I took a closer look at their renders. It had a simple grey and blueish-cyan keycap set, which I immediately fancied. Since RAMA and I were DM-ing back and forth about my M60-A Moon pre-order, I asked about the set. Turned out that it was just a render and they suggested I just go make it myself. I started mocking up the set that same evening.

The Moon colour on the M60-A from RAMA WORKS is a cool grey which I really fancy but the icing on the cake was the phosphor filled enamel product code and RAMA logo. These two colours inspired my own colour choices.

No, sorry. Something was wrong here. I saw all the pictures when sending post for mod approval and then the pics were attached but they weren't showing up. Random bad luck for me I guess.

He selected Pantones and it will take GMK a bit to receive samples from their plastics supplier. They won't start sampling until there's sufficient orders to make sure resources are not wasted.

Really cool to see the enthusiasm of the GB runner. Had a good read through the history. It's a tough time to have GMK run but I doubt it will get any better in the future. Good luck!

I think Phosphorous will end up being one of those sleeper hits tbh that will become very popular/pricey in the secondary market, in the way Serika and Olivia were.

I havent been advertising this, but the kits really are good value. Child kits are basically sold at cost, and base has barely any profit. It might not be enough for me to even cover render costs.

Just out of curiosity, do the key company and other mirrors typically purchase X amount of sets for extras? I would guess it be more of a percentage where more popular sets would have more extras to supply more demand for people that missed it.

...Aaand I'm in. GMK could really start lowering their prices a little with all the action they're getting these days, but I bit the apple and placed the order. Scratch off another NorDeUk kit as well. Come on, guys. I don't want to be left without on my board! Let's do this :)

I havent been advertising this, but the kits really are good value. Child kits are basically sold at cost, and base has barely any profit. It might not be enough for me to even cover render costs.

That's incredibly noble and nice, and as respectable as that is, doesn't change the fact that GMK charges as much as they do for it. I'm sure it's a lot of work for them too, but it can't be _that_ complicated at this point, or use that _that_ many resources.

Maybe I'm just being nave or ignorant... or maybe my soul just hasn't gotten used to spending this much money on bits of plastic yet :)

Are the MOQ and sales numbers shown for all sellers combined or just the key company? I put my order in on the first day and definitely want to see this set made....

All vendors are included. It will be made. Dont worry!

Just out of curiosity, do the key company and other mirrors typically purchase X amount of sets for extras? I would guess it be more of a percentage where more popular sets would have more extras to supply more demand for people that missed it.

Yes.

Yes of course, in the base kit. The accented 7U is in the Spacebar kit.

Dear Geekhackers,

We are the point where the base kit should hit MOQ without major issues. However, the child kits need some ❤️ especially by those who really wanted them during the IC phase.

Lets do this! Let no kit be left behind!

That whole thread was very interesting, and I admit, I vastly overestimated the scale of their operations, it seems. I thought their production was part of an industry that was still going strong, but perhaps it should be compared more with vinyl record plants, in that they work a lot with small batches and towards either extremely specific industries or the hobbyist group.

One thing that was weird though is their MOQ. If they work that slowly and at that small scale anyway, why is the MOQ so high? I get that they _want_ it to be high, because it benefits their business, but surely more kits being made _at all_ sounds like a better deal than having a steep limit where kits don't get made at all?

Also, as someone asked in that thread, I hope they do a video tour of their factory, would be extremely interesting to see.

The reason for the MOQ is cost.  The setup cost is fixed, whether they make 10 sets or 250.  So dividing setup cost by 250 kits is way less per kit than dividing it among 10.

Setup involves installing and tuning the tools for each keycap, mixing the resin colors, purging the tools and equipment of previous color resin, etc.  Once a setup is up and running, making more keycaps is only a fraction of the cost.  Of course, each keycap requires time, material, inspection, sorting, and packing, so keycaps are not free.

This is why price drops get smaller and further apart as kit quantity increases.

Edit: Adding a graph.  Why didn't I do this before, right?

Variable cost remains constant for each kit, so it increases linearly for the full production order as the number of kits in that order increases.

Fixed cost remains constant for the full production order, so it drops per kit as the number of kits in the production order increase.

If you read the GMK Shoko thread, IIRC it's something to do with the MOQ on the amount of pigment/dye they have to buy from another company. For stock colors, they already have the materials on hand, but custom colors have to be a separate order and it doesn't sound like they can obtain the material at lower quantities. That's just my superficial understanding though. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Any thoughts as to where?  I also have a summary of Colevrak+ kit support I'd like to pin somewhere.

No clue. Maybe somewhere on reddit and one could just link it every time someone wants SA kit design on a GMK set. It totally makes sense to want it, it just doesn't work that well.

I think it should be paired with Oblotsky's estimates when he tried to run GMK Oblivion R2 with monochrome, Git, and regular mods, along with regular/hagoromo/cadet/hagoromo cadet alphas so people could mix and match, although Umbra kit design 1 would probably work too.

Just wondering, forgive my ignorance

Why most of the key sets we see in "IC" are not suited for backlight?
Is this "preference" or simply impossible/astronomically expensive to make a "backlight ready" keyset?

In response to the reply at GMK's high MOQs, I goofed on my reply. I buried it in the quotes so here it is again.

Not impossible. Actually keycaps that allow in light are usually quite cheap. The difference is that the legends would have to be see-through. That means we'd only have non-legend color unique and the legends would be a transparent plastic with the color representing whatever color LED you are using - unless you are using per-key individual addressable RGB LEDs.

OK so getting final tallies up for this week but were at:

Base: 215
Numpad: 61
Spacebars: 93
40s: 41
NorDEUK: 18

These are not final numbers for today still waiting for confirmation from some vendors (wait for me to give you official ones dvorcol please!).

Were really close to hitting MOQ and the only endangered sets are 40s and NorDEUK. Theres still a few days left, so lets do this! 💪🏻🤘🏻

Official for today.

Nucleus (Core): 218/250
Strong Force (Spacebars): 95/100
Protons (NumPad): 63/100
Quarks (40s/ortho): 42/100
Neutrons (NorDEUK): 23/100
Desk mat: 35/20
RAMA artisan: 91/50

We have surpassed 87% of the required MOQ and on our way to the finish line. Theres about a week left so make sure to get your order in before the group buy ends.

Were currently fighting to get ALL KITS made, including NorDEUK, but we need your help, to get as close to MOQ as possible (or surpass it, ideally), so if youre still on the fence, go get your order in as soon as possible. Thank you! ❤️

Of course, but I'm sorry, I can't really get more kits just to get them. I'm out way more than I want to be just buying this set at all. I don't think it's reasonable to expect people to buy multiple kits just to hope they get made, not at the prices they're at.

As it stands, I've bought one of almost all kits, and that is already a lot of money. I can't do much more than just hope more people get on board buying themselves a set each.

Since I have finally got back after a week or so of travel, I wanted to write down a few thoughts after my first GMK group buy.

Firstly, I would like to thank each of you, including the vendors of course, for all your support and help along the way. The road to GB stage was steep and full of traps, and I fell into one or two. I'd like to think I learned a lot and will hopefully be able to activate this knowledge during the upcoming GMK Lunar IC and GB stage.

Secondly, the group buy stage was probably one of the most stressful events I have ever had. With no experience as to how sales go, you might have noticed that I was freaking out a bit along the way (yes, I'm putting it mildly). This ultimately led to about a week of being basically unable to get any meaningful sleep, with all my dreams being filled by keyboard and keycap stuff. Keeping motivated and staying positive wasn't easy, especially since my first group buy was surrounded by 8 other wonderful sets, including GMK Firefly, GMK Coral, and GMK Caf (the 3 that struck my fancy most). And then there was GMK Dracula, which took off faster than the Millennium Falcon doing the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs. That was quite intimidating.

The people who read the "history" part of the first IC and GB posts know that I have a RAMA M60-A Moon Stealth on the way (hopefully shipping soon!)  my first RAMA, my first HHKB, my first inspiration  which was the spark to design GMK Phosphorous. Obviously my biggest dream was for this set to get made for the most selfish reason possible  I wanted it ON MY M60-A! So I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you all for making this dream come true!

❤️

Dear GMK Phosphorous buyers,

I have some news regarding the NorDEUK kit...

Neutrons the NorDEUK Kit
After weeks of negotiations with GMK in regard to the NorDEUK kit, we were unable to come to an understanding which would be financially feasible in any way. The costs that MyKeyboard.eu would have had to incur would have been so large, that I wouldn't have wanted them to take them upon their shoulders.

So it is with great saddness 😢 that I have to announce, that NorDEUK will not get made. I admit I jumped the gun saying that "all kits will be made" but I truly believed, especially seeing all the other sets, that we'd get there.

This means that you now have a choice:
- you can get refunded for your whole order
- you can get refunded for just NorDEUK, and keep the rest of the order intact

Either way, please contact MyKeyboard.eu via email, discord, etc.

Colour-matching process
The colour-matching process has been underway for a few weeks now and I'm currently awaiting samples from GMK. To top this off, my personal RAMA M60-A Moon Stealth should hopefully arrive very soon (I already have received my shipping information), so I'll be able to do a comparison on and with a physical keyboard.

I'll get some pictures up as soon as I have all the necessary parts.

Status update:

- colour-matching process is underway
- GMK received the plastic colour chips late Nov IIRC so we should be seeing some samples soon
- the kit structure GMK received is correct and verified, and will be confirmed to them tomorrow
- my RAMA M60-A Moon Stealth arrived shortly before Christmas and Im anxious to not only show you how the colours compare, but to get Phosphorous onto the keyboard ASAP; waiting for samples to post photos

Meanwhile, enjoy some shots of the M60...

This is my RAMA M60-A Moon Stealth with the phosphor-filled enamel weight. The plastic chip is Pantone 311 C, which will be used for the legends and accent keys. This photo was shot under a mixture of muted natural light (very cloudy outside today) and strong yellow (warm) artificial light. I tried to tweak the white balance to make it as neutral as possible but it's not perfect. Nevertheless, the phosphor-filled enamel is very very close to the chosen Pantone 311 C!

Judging by the photo, too greenish chip, no? Not very consistent with the colors previously shown on the render. I hope samples from GMK will be more "blue".

Renders aren't colour-accurate, and please remember that lighting has a profound effect... so it will all depend on your surroundings. As an example, the M60-A Moon looks silver in bright light and dark grey in darker environments. Likewise, Pantone 311 C will look darker and more blue-ish in the evenings or darker rooms while it will look more cyan-ish in bright sunlight.

Also, the attached photo is sRGB and I have no clue what you're using to view it, but your screen calibration (which is also OS and browser dependant) is another thing which I have no control over.

Ok. Waiting for samples from GMK, and a lot of their photos in different lighting. In any case, I believe that the set will turn out damn good.

Made a quick photoshop of what Phosphorous will approx. look like on a RAMA M60-A, based on a photo of a another keycap set. It is not colour-accurate. The top of the keyboard is too purple-ish, the bottom a bit too light, while the keycaps themselves aren't the exact shade of grey that they're supposed to be. Anyway, just a teaser 'cos I can't wait for samples any longer!

Are there going to be any extra kits or RAMA caps?

Yes. A vendor near you will have them after shipping out the GB items. They and I will notify about this via appropriate channels (here, discord, IG, etc.).

Damn! Really sad to see the NorDeUk kit fall through, I was really looking forward to this. However, with a couple of other sets on the way as well, it doesn't make sense to buy a only semi-complete set... So unfortunately I asked to cancel and refund my order :(

If nothing else, maybe that means another extra for someone else to buy who missed the GB? ;)

I'd love to buy one of the extras if there are any available, any ideas if and when extras would go on sale?

There will be extras. Please follow this thread, my IG, or your chosen proxy on Discord, IG, etc. Fastest way to know. Ill post when extras go live in this thread too.

Yeah I literally just did the same.  They sold out so fast, two minutes!
Super excited, but my wallet's super mad.  TKL is the layout for me, but this keyboard and keycap set are a match made in heaven.

I wasn't sure which board I was going to put this set on initially, but when I saw extras go on sale I figured it was a match made in heaven. This set was designed with inspiration from the board!

Glad I got in on the extras, they were gone pretty quickly. Now to wait for the colour matching so that I can see what I've picked up!

As far as extras for this set go, DailyClack have them up right now (my local proxy) so if you missed the buy you can get an order in now to guarantee it. I imagine other vendors will put them up when they're ready.

Please note this image is not 100% colour accurate too. I got it as close as I could to real life, but the lighting really sucks today (cloudy and ugly).

Because of the flat lighting, the difference between the different greys isn't as obvious as in better light (wanted to refrain from using artificial lighting). So, to clarify:

- Pantone Cool Grey 11 C is slightly darker and cooler than Oblivion Alphas.
- Oblivion mods have a darker and warmer grey.
- Turns out that MoDo mods have an identical colour.
- M60-A Moon Stealth is approximately Pantone Cool Grey 10 C.
