Love the colours and I've been looking out for a KAT profile kit that supports JIS layout :-D

This kit comes very close to having everything required for proper JIS layout support; it is only missing one key. That is the ー key, used to extend syllables as in the word "keyboard", 「キーボード」.  With the addition of this key it is possible to type Japanese using kana input. It belongs to the right of the number row, next to the backspace.

JIS users also need a 1U backspace key in order to make space for it, but I see you already have that in your 40s/Ortho set.  You also have correctly-positioned む and ろ keys available, which is great to see!

Overall, great work on the relatively comprehensive JIS layout support!  Please consider the inclusion of this one additional key in order to take it over the finishing line.  See Masterpiece and Sumi for examples of this key in use (albeit in GMK sets), and its correct positioning.  Thanks!

I thought the Japanese legends were just for aesthetics. Do people actually use them for JIS layouts? I see the argument for compatibility coming up recently, but I'm wondering how many people need that compatibility.

Hey everyone, thank you for the amazing feedback on this set! Right now I am working on trying to get an update out, but for now I'm a little concerned that not everyone is on the same page about the colors of the set, I've received an alarming number of comments on the google form from people thinking that the main modifier color is yellow, this is not correct. Just to be clear, the base mod color is Orange, where as the alpha legend color and dark kits legend color is yellow. It seems like just from looking at the renders it's hard to tell that they are different colors, I want to make sure that everyone knows the correct colors and isn't under the impression that the colors are different.

Huh... Gonna be honest, not sure how I feel about that cuz I was really excited for orange. I for one didn't notice the yellow at all. But then again, if they blend so much that I don't notice, it should be fine?

I thought the Japanese legends were just for aesthetics. Do people actually use them for JIS layouts? I see the argument for compatibility coming up recently, but I'm wondering how many people need that compatibility.

This is actually a surprisingly complex question which I and others on the forum have been trying to get to grips with.  Lurking behind the apparently simple problem of whether people actually type using the kana input method whereby each key produces the kana character rendered on that key is the more complex problem of JIS support in general, which as far as I can tell has not received a huge amount of attention on this forum until recently.

To answer the first, simple question: yes, there are people that use the hiragana input method when typing Japanese (I am one of them), but it is also true that they are a minority, even in Japan.  The romaji input method, whereby you might type the letters ďtĒ followed by ďaĒ and they would automatically be converted to ďたĒ, is the more common way of inputting Japanese, even amongst native speakers of the language.

However, it is also true that within Japan at large, the vast majority of people use a JIS-layout keyboard. This is a similar problem to ISO support, Norde kits, take your pick ó the location of many of the punctuation symbols is different from US-ANSI, and if that is your preferred layout it immediately rules out a huge range of keysets, since JIS support has traditionally been extremely lacking in the community.  The only keyset Iíve found so far which really does it justice is /dev/ttyís ďJapanĒ set, which offers a remarkable level of support at the cost of adding a large number of extra keys.

Now, I would like to see full JIS support kits become commonplace not just for sets which involve kana monolegends or even sublegends, but for *all* kinds of sets, including sets which contain only Latin alphas.  ISO and Norde have been an uphill battle for a long time but seem pretty commonplace now, and perhaps one day this will be the case for JIS, too.  However, I understand that the ~9 extra alpha keys and 4 extra modifier keys required for full JIS support is a lot to ask.  By comparison, supporting JIS alpha layouts fully on a monolegend set like this one is quite easy: all that is required is one extra key.  From the people Iíve spoken to so far, this does not add much if anything to the overall cost of the set, and it opens it up to a whole class of users who might not otherwise have considered it.

Admittedly, I have a dog in this fight.  This whole campaign started for me when I bought GMK WoB Hiragana, naively assuming it would have all the keys I needed, and I had to sell it on the day it arrived because I couldnít use it with my (JIS) keyboard.  I am trying to be reasonable about it, though ó I understand that keyset designers have to balance a lot of trade-offs and they canít satisfy everybody.  Thatís why Iíve so far focused my energy on kits in which supporting JIS layouts is both relatively easy and clearly justifiable; namely, kana monolegend sets. I donít expect everyone to go along with it, but I do hope people can at least consider it, because I suspect that the lack of support so far has had as much to do with lack of awareness of what is required for JIS support as it has to do with the actual feasibility of including it.  If I can help designers with the first issue so that they can make their own judgment regarding the second, then that is all I can ask for :-)

I hope that helps to answer your question!  Feel free to follow up either here (if it wonít derail this thread too much), via DM or on Discord.  I am on Tysonís server as well as Keycap Designers and some others, and Iím eager to do what I can to help raise awareness generally of whatís involved in supporting JIS layouts!

That makes a lot of sense, as a niche user, I fully understand that. And how frustrating it is to just be one or two keys away from having compatibility.

Personally I gravitate towards non-Latin alpha kits, because of two reasons: Colemak DHm is often not supported (different story with KAT fortunately) and I like the novelty kits. Hiragana is overdone by now imo, but I've yet to see my first Katakana kit. I am not a big fan of text mods, unless they're novelty mods, like Godspeed kits. Then I will pick Latin+Colevrak.

As for this kit, I don't know the anime character, but it reminds me of the modern Deus Ex games. Having Katakana + mods could make for a good look approaching that aesthetic.

I can definitely see Deus Ex vibes hahahaha, I never really thought about that. I've had someone think it was a JoJo inspired set based off of Dio's colors.

Yeah, my next update for the set is in the works, right now I have been trying to find a job since I was laid off, as soon as I can I will post an update for this set :)

I have not, I will take a look into the mods and potentially see. There hasn't really been any interest in my google form for those icon mods but I will look into it.

Quick Update:
- Removal of orange 2 and 3 key from UK ISO Kit
- Fix Ergo Kit
- Add ____ Novelty to both Novelty kits
- Add White Latin Alpha and Katakana Alpha kits, WS1 White with same legend color as the other alpha kits
- In talks with a US Vendor to run this set, more updates on this to follow :)

As mentioned earlier in the thread, the katakana kit is missing a R4 1u ー key.

The ý٪ and ٭Ķ keys in the French kit can be removed as they are not used in practice to any noteworthy degree, and are essentially duplicates of the ý% and *Ķ keys.

The sizing of the alphas also seems a bit off in the French kit.

Edit: The orange '@ key in the UK kit seems unnecessary too, like the orange 2" and 3£ that you removed. And I guess you want to keep the orange R2 #~, \| and R1 \| keys in order to allow ISO users to have mods in the V shape if they want?

Definitely interested, orange and black are my favorite colors.  The yellow legends don't bother me at all, they compliment the orange and black nicely.
