CYBERBOARD - 75% CUSTOM KEYBOARD

Intro

Hello, Geekhackers, this is Crazy Designers from China!

Just like our name, we are a team of crazy designers, and the [CYBERBOARD] is a big project now we're working on. The inspiration comes from the Cybertruck of Tesla.

Renders

Basic colors

KAMs 80s AfterDark

GMK Retrocast

GMK Neon City

Engineering Sample

2020/06/17 updates

After we received the last prototype, we are not satisfied for some reasons. and we have been working hard on it :)

We all know that the LED panel is a really interesting point. The slot to locate the LED panel is so complicated at first place that we change it to be magnetic finally.

Close-up display of LEDs and its lattice:

When I got the prototype of the cyberboard, I built it with carbon plate and the holypanda switches, and it is just not satisfying me.

So, we improved the structure. Based on top mount, we made some optimizations. For example, we added some silicone to the suspension.

To ensure the typing experience, we tried making a silicone pad specially for CYBERBOARD (current testing).
It can fill the gap between the plate and PCB (as you can see in the photo below )

*Exploded view of Cyberboard

2020/06/23 updates

WE HAVE DESIGNED A CASE FOR CYBERBOARD !! so its basically what it looks like, and we are discussing the color of the fonts / case

the prototype of the case:

2020/06/30 updates

We are confirming the color options we will finally sell, and we have now received two prototypes óó space grey and black. After receiving all the prototypes (8 colors), we will select satisfactory ones as the final options.

Specs & FAQs:

1. LEDs:
Programmable(you can customize the pattern like time, wavy lines and other not too complicated effects)
Resolution - 5*40
Supports USB 3.0

2. Mounting method: Top mount (optimized)
3. Weight: 2.4kg
4. Dimensions: 340.5 x 181 x42.2mm
5. Case: 6063 aluminium alloy
6. Machining: CNC and anodization
7. PCB: Hot swappable
8. Layout: ANSI layout
9. The angle of the diagonal face:  10į

Price range?
500 USD (estimated)

Is it hard to power CYBERBOARD because of the LEDs?
Maximum power consumption of the LED panel will be limited to 400 mA.

Will the led part of your board be removable in case i want to powdercoat/cerakote the case?
Yes,we make it magnetic so its quite easy to take off

Will switches require extra support legs to fit the CYBERBOARD?
we support 3-pin switches as well as 5-pin switches

Not based on QMK?
We're sorry we didn't say anything about QMK in the first place...we used a close source MCU, please check the GH thread or discord announcements for more info

I have seen the wrist rest in your early renders. Can we buy one if we want it?
Sorry we won't make wrist rest.

Is this fully assembled or just DIY kit?
It's a DIY kit which means keycaps or switches are not included.

Unlimited group buy?
Sorry it's limited.

Attention

Cyberboard is not based on QMK. We did not have the ability to handle QMK transplantation at that time, so we used ready-made commercial solutions-we used [SN32F248B] as the MCU. This MCU uses close source firmware with independent intellectual property rights.

Project Timeline

- Groupbuy starts in July/August! COMING SOON

How are you handling the led matrix pcb wise? I'd assume you're using an LED driver as usable (with qmk compat) commercial mcu's don't have enough pins for the switch matrix and the led matrix.

The lights are just going to be reflected by the computer screen and be annoying. Anyone who buys this is going to have the LEDs on for max five minutes before they are fed up with the gimmick.

With twice as many RGB LEDs as any full-size keyboard, few ports are going to power it. Forget even trying it with a laptop.

Oh man, good luck powering this thing at full power with anything that's not a desktop psu. I assume that they would use either the ws2812b or a dumb rgb led with a led controller. Now if we do the math for the worst case scenario with ws2812b's, it doesn't look good. Each channel (R, G and B) on a ws2812b can draw max 20mA. If all 3 channels are at max power, they draw 60mA. The led display seems to have 200 leds. If all of them are at max brightness and on white, the leds will draw 12A. at 5v, that's 60W. I'd like to see how they handle thermals and power for that. But, lets think about a more realistic scenario, lets take a current draw of 10mA for each LED. That's 2A @ 5v, right in line with the USB PD profile 1. If they add a usb pd negotiation chip to the pcb, then that would be possible. A buck converter may be needed for higher current operation, as usb PD profiles only offer 2A max at 5v.

Consider a standard RGB 60%.  By your logic, it would take 3.6A to power it.  Any matrix driver only drives one row or column at a time...

This will still be interesting to follow as it's 600 LEDs to control, so at least 50 pins.  More likely though there would be several cheaper drivers running around 20x5 RGB matrices.  This is still 60 LEDs running concurrently, but because the LEDs aren't indicators and don't have to shine through switches/caps they can be run at very low current and still seem quite bright.

you're right, in that example I got a bit carried away, and assumed that they were using the ws2812b's only.

Not based on qmk. They found a new IC, rewritten the driver, and still debugging.

See here.
LEDs:
It has many modes, you can customize the pattern like time, wavy lines and other not too complicated effects.(support USB 3.0)
There's not much word on how, but what we do know is that the programmability is not going to be QMK-based.

I'm wondering, do we really need to split the discussion between two IC threads for the same board? Maybe just use the official one, and a mod can lock this.

I would still like some info about how that front panel is powered, pcb and panel both get power through one usb cable perhaps?

The lights are just going to be reflected by the computer screen and be annoying. Anyone who buys this is going to have the LEDs on for max five minutes before they are fed up with the gimmick.

With twice as many RGB LEDs as any full-size keyboard, few ports are going to power it. Forget even trying it with a laptop.

This. Whatís the power draw on this if itís powered by usb ?

- Matrix
- Time (hh:mm:ss).

What would be awesome is for it to be user controlled, addressable...

Lookup RAINBOWDUINO, maybe implementing it would be easier for you and more powerful to the end user, using an open standard platform seems like the best way to go for it.

Also please make sure that you have proper heat dissipation for those leds.

we've used 200 RGB LEDs(5*40), and the maximum power consumption is limited to 400 mA. USB 3.0 can handle this

it's a dedicated secondary microcontroller.

Cool. Is there any communication between the main keyboard MCU and the MCU that's in charge of the LED panel? It would be cool to at least connect the two of them via UART or I2C, to allow the possibility of controlling the LED effects directly from the keyboard firmware (e.g. QMK). I do realize that this requires some additional development effort on the firmware side, but if it isn't implemented immediately, it'd still be cool to leave it open for the future by having the hardware support it. Again, the two MCUs just need to be connected via UART or I2C for that to happen.

"Is there any communication between the main keyboard MCU and the MCU that's in charge of the LED panel? "  → yes, through SPI. And, we control the LED effects from the main keyboard MCU.

also, I'm sincerely asking, is it possible to use one main keyboard MCU to control all these things (LED effects)?

Alright, that's good to know. Yes, it's certainly possible, it just depends on what specific hardware you're using and how easy or difficult it would be to add support for it in QMK. I'll PM you with some questions.

I think this board is going to look great in any color.

That particular blue might be good for matching with Symbiosis keycaps, though I think Iíd like to maybe see one closer to navy blue.

Though that initial design of gunmetal/space grey is so appealing I might have trouble favoring any other color.

I was honestly kinda meh when I saw the renders, and haven't checked since. But hot damn, the prototypes actually look better than the renders

But I told myself I was done LOL

I saw someone asked but didn't see that it was answered. What's the estimated price point for this? It looks like it'll be $600+

The purple looks cool, but I don't think you should call that purple.  It's more of a Fuchsia.  Maybe call it something like Cyber Fuchsia

alright i got all your ideas!

for the purple case, many of you said that ain't real purple, its more like pink or Fuchsia something. in fact what we want is a deeper purple color, so we gotta get another prototype for a satisfied solution.
for the red / blue case, some of you like it and others are not. its a little bit controversial. But we gonna improve them in next prototypes.

The red (well, maybe more burgundy) and blue turned out fantastic. I love the deeper purple on that example with the thumb screws too. That other version of purple must be easier to produce or something since it seems like most anodized "purple" offered usually ends up being that magenta color.

yeah The led board is soldered by hand...  you can't replace it without having soldering skills.
Since it's just for testing, so we didn't care too much... You won't have that problem.

I must say that I am disappointed the board wonít use QMK.  I also donít care about the Bluetooth feature as I likely wonít utilize it. (Especially if the board doesnít ship with itís own battery like Iíve seen with most Bluetooth enabled PCB or board kits)

But that being said, I can see how that feature might be a draw for some folks and Iím still very excited about the progress being made on this project.  If I only go in on a single keyboard project out of this year, the Cyberboard will be it to be sure.

I'm assuming this is going to be using one of the common NRF bluetooth modules, if so, the Joric QMK branch is supported, so QMK is possible, though not on the main branch/configurator

I agree with the sentiments above--I'd much rather see QMK support than Bluetooth.  On this board in particular, that LED matrix is going to just devour battery, so I'm not sure it even makes sense...

I'm pretty neutral on the whole Bluetooth debate, however, I will say that due to it's size and weight, Bluetooth is a unique inclusion, especially since the board looks like it will be very heavy.

It's a cyber board, it should be raw brushed stainless steel finish.  Like the cyber truck.  Or a delorean.

Assuming, you are talking about the carrying case, I really like the black option with the green text, but I can imagine a brushed/natural aluminum color going well with the theme. Will the carrying case be an optional add-on?

I love the idea of the case but you need to think more like 1980's font and colours.  The case itself is good but the font is wrong.  This is not an industrial keyboard (in my eyes) it is a hackers keyboard from the 1980's.  Think "War Games" and a digital font.  If you go this way then space grey or black with green would be the order of the day.

I started with a Sinclair human flesh keyboard in 1980 and it has never stopped.

That looks neat, but I don't really know what I'm looking at.  Is it an alternate bottom weight piece?  What is it going to be made out of?  It looks like that is going to be a PITA to machine if it's going to be metal...

I donít know what it will be made of but itís a sound dampening piece.  The wavy shape is interesting, and should cut down on echo reverberation inside of the case.  Similar to the effect of corrugation in giant steel pipe structures, which eliminate the echo effect if you were talking inside of them.

In that case, the corrugation is rigid and eliminates echo, so I donít know if this dampener would need to be rubbery or spongey like other keyboard dampening techniques Iíve seen.  Interesting in any event!

Presumably it's an internal dampener, similar to the RAMA ones. Looks similar, too.
